I thought that’s why we had shareholder’s who invested capital into businesses. Maybe if so much capital hadn’t been returned to shareholders, they’d have enough money to pay for planes.

While the new planes may be more “efficient”, ultra long haul is less efficient than stopping somewhere due to extra fuel load required.

Oh, that article and interview with Minister King is just priceless. The minister has truly belled the cat as to what is top of her agenda in regulating the aviation industry. Qantas - you know, after investing so much money on new planes 🤣

To check the paywall, use 12ft – Hop any paywall

And to further show that she’s on top of her game she said:

Ms King admitted that airfare prices “have been too high” but said an aviation green paper due “shortly” would talk “a bit about the issue around pricing competition, consumer rights and the importance of that”.

That’s going to fix the high prices then.

And to further show that she’s on top of her game she said:
[blah blah blah]

That’s going to fix the high prices then.
How depressing for Australian aviation consumers. King thinks the answer to the problems caused by government intervention is more government intervention, all in the meantime protecting Qantas' private interests at the expense of the travelling public and Australian tourism industries.

That's now four different reasons proffered by King.

From thee QF REPORTS

share buybacks have been at least 30% plus of shareholdings

And then a $2.5 billion profit in 22/23 following the Covid losses

My what one might do with RRIA Revenue Received in Advance ($8 billion) which isn’t brought to taxable until flights are flown, points are redeemed (for toasters and wine)

How about this remark by the Minister.
“But you know, it’s good to see, I think [Qantas’ airline partner] Emirates has also increased its capacity as well, but international aviation certainly incoming is still not back to where we’d like it to be,” she said, without saying why the government decided to rebuff Qatar, which has additional capacity to spare.

So capacity isn't back to where the Government wants it to be yet they knock back a proposal to increase capacity. Incompetance reigns supreme.
How about all the workers in tourism. aren't their jobs as important as QF jobs. And there are a lot more of them than at QF.
The States,Tourism bodies and operators all wanted the QR increase in capacity. But then one of the PMs most treasured moments as Transport Minister in his words was his protection of Qantas.

Sounds like an episode of Utopia

Every company (and Government) have self interest at heart, but it needs to be balanced with what is in the greater good. I’m not sure that the greater good is being upheld with the flat out denial of Qatar’s request. There are plenty of Australian jobs that go with the increase in travel overall.

The numbers tell a story (chart information from OAG and CIBC).

I found the chart on LinkedIn on my mobile and not clever enough to be able to rotate to a full screen.

Would love to see that chart for Australia and note the differences from the World numbers. There should be growth for all, does Qantas believe they have a right to more of it? Management probably do, but the travelling public want choice - which will bring competition and cheaper prices. I’ve flown less than 5 sectors in 15 months on QF (all domestic). Back on topic, Qatar deserve more spots. Qantas deserve to have more (and conceivably) better competition

Every time the scriptwriters of Utopia think up something ridiculous and outlandish, our politicians seem to take that as a challenge to surpass.

Thats now 4 different reasons proffered by the minister as to the basis of the decision. Absolutely laughable.
When someone offers more than one acceptable reason then the whole decision making process is a farce. I think this time the reporters can smell blood.

It actually suggests to me they are dodging and they don't want to divulge the real reason. Either it is to protect QF (which would be politically unpopular) or there is something at play with Qatar government that no wants divulged publicly, so pull some answers from the Yes Minister script instead.
