Just called up to cancel since I didn't get the bonus points. Was offered a change to the Discovery Card and full refund of the $450. Very friendly agent mentioned she could offer a full refund since its been less than 30 days since I paid the annual fee, just as a heads up for anyone looking to cancel as well.
Just called and a cancel/refund was denied because the bonus points have been awarded, despite the flight not being used.

HUACA - I think a direct refund of the annual fee is not possible, but it is a side benefit of transferring to the Discovery Card that a pro-rata refund of annual fee is processed.

So i got the bonus 5k points for first spend and then the 2.5k for qantas spend but not the 105k sign on bonus after that. I decided to contact Amex about it expecting they would tell me that holding the premium card ment i didnt get the points in which i would change to the discovery card and get a refund of the fee. I contacted via online chat then about a week later i got a phone call from amex saying that they were crediting my account the missing 65k bonus points. (i received 40K via refferrals and i think they must have thought these were part of my 105k missing points) wasnt game enough to tell them it should have been 105k not 65k.........

I have just called back to finalise the closure of the card and something has occurred to me here.

- Called yesdterday afternoon for the annual fee refund. It was granted in full and I was told to call back once the $450 hits my account to organise the transfer to a bank account. Money was there this morning.
- I called back just then and still had the option on the phone to redeem the complimentary flight.
- I didn't think anything of it so proceeded to have the cash transferred to me.

Im wondering if it would be possible to have the annual fee refunded, then redeem the flight and then once redeemed have the $450 transferred to a bank account and finalise closure. Anyone want to volunteer to find out? :D

I'm finding myself in the same boat. From what I can tell the card is still active and showing a balance of -$450. Very tempting... :)

I applied for this card a week or so ago ...

Got letter today, claiming I have "a history of non payment ..." with AMEX.

Yes, I did.

That was eight years ago now ( Bankrupt period 2009 - 2016 )

Can they legally continue to hold this against me ??

( I was OFFERED a cc from another bank last year, which I took up, and it has been operated with no issues )

I'm just letting my card sit there still open now. I'll try to use the free flight if/when I need to fly somewhere. No rush.
Suggest you have them transfer the $450 to your bank account.

For those who 'may' be interested ...

I rang AMEX. In short ... "No". Yes, they do hold cough against you .... for a lot longer than the mythical seven years ( the guy told me, more like 50 years !! )

Did a Westpac application .... same result. 'No way' !!

However .... I then did an online Application to NAB ( 75,000 Bonus points etc. ), and ...... APPROVED in less than 60 seconds.

Go figure ??

I made my first spend on 6th April, however still no 2500 bonus points for first spend. I have an existing plat edge and closed a Velocity Plat a few months ago.

Perhaps they have stopping giving new sign on bonuses to people who have had amex cards within the last 18 months :(

I'm sorry to hear that. When did you apply? Please keep us posted on how it goes (fingers crossed they come through shortly!!)

March 2017 application and first spend early April 2017. Will keep this thread updated to give another data point.

I really do too!

Rejected again by manager at Sydney Call Centre (transferred there from initial Manila operator). Held firm, even on transfer to discovery card.

Wow..unlucky. The operator who I spoke with actually came to me with the idea and approved it. This was some time ago now though (month or so?) - got both mine & mrs card done by the same operator.

Seems Amex are a bit over the churn and refund requests and double ups.

Seems that AMEX have tightened up. They said as I have a Plat edge, I am not eligible for any bonus points.

:(

Did you signup using a referral link? What rewards program is your Plat Edge on? Membership Rewards or Qantas Direct?

Signed up using referral link. Card arrived in mail promptly with a "member since 98" on card, so they do remember and link. . I have a rarely used MR Amex card where I have about 300,000 points warehoused. My credit limit on this new card is a measly $3000 - I was hoping to spend $20-30k per month on this card as I'm cutting up my ANZ Black once I get my QF lounge passes.

I got a pretty rude manager telling me that no-one with an existing card who signed up for this Amex QFF Plat would have received any bonus points. Clearly not aware of the internet...
