QF announce non-stop Perth-London B787 Services

There is absolutely no need for this to occur, that is the main issue here. QF could operate from T1, not requiring a single cent to be funded by the taxpayer.

Have you let anyone from Qantas know you're findings? They must've been unaware

I'm with MEL_Traveller. Qantas has a long history of beating their own chest for what I would consider being non-events. They made an advertisement about an advertisement FFS!!.

Do either of you understand the concept of marketing???

How many articles would get written if Qantas said.

"We'd like to announce a new seat that is pretty similar to something everyone else has and we will be using a new aircraft called the 787, new for us but one that about 20 other airlines fly. We also slightly tweaked or paint scheme bit don't think most will notice the changes."

Qantas marketing does a good job, and the print media lap it up because articles about Qantas sell (or get high click throughs)

My point is not about the advertising... it's about the detail. A general statement was made that some on AFF are too critical of qantas... but unfortunately with so many #*~ on every email, every announcement and every 'offer', most likely there's a catch somewhere :(

At least thanks to AFFers such as MEL_Traveller thousands of prospective travellers who read AFF know that what QF (and many other airlines) state is 'spin' and the devil is truly in the detail.

You won't see me or many others on a cramped B789 from Perth to London nonstop - no thanks. Fares will be higher than competitors so there's little reason to choose QF, which has a declining market share of international travel to and from Australia.

If a marketer over hypes a "new" product, he or she creates high expectations that may not be fulfilled.

Yes I hope I understand the concept of Marketing - 38 years in a non friendly product you learn a few things or two.

But I think some of us are making the point about QF because we do care about them and hate seeing the way they have gone. I am one of those. The huge focus on names "Marc Newson" designed forks, spoons, logo's, toothpicks; Neil Perry inspired food (I'm sure he had a hand in preparing the QF24 food the other day in BKK!), just does not convert to a good service. Wow, we paid Newson again to design our beds; so does that inspire us to fly them? Does it give us better service? I will fly EVA over QF simply because they offer a far better service.

Probably the 787 launch, which their marketing seemed make them a launch customer is a little bit too much when you see the Scoot, Royal Brunei, Thai, Continental, Ethiopian, etc, etc, was over the top for a few of us.

The Commonwealth and state government have tipped in some funds as there is a need to duplicate Customs and Border Force services at the new internatioanl entry/exit point. It is the provision of these services that the givernments have committed to fund....
However, the federal government gets $55 PMC back for every departing passenger, provisionally to cover the cost of providing the border processing services (and IMO it is likely to slightly reduce staff at T1 to cover the cost of a skeleton service at T3, presumably mostly smart gates and not humans - meaning a negligible increase in the cost of providing service across the PER terminals, given the overall increase in nett PMC from the new London flight).

So in effect, only the WA government has decided to subside Qantas, coughising the potential for the market to decide which operator should enter the LON-PER non-stop flight market.

IMO the WA government has been played hard and fast by the much more sophisticated (east coast based) Qantas Government Affairs team.

I agree with you about 90-95%. The only reason its not 100% is that I think good old Col (Barnett) saw an opportunity to do something 'positive' especially as he is 1) tourism minister as well as Premier, and 2) there is an election in March.

I wonder how many times this will get rolled out during the campaign?

I had never heard of Marc Newson or Neil Perry before QF started throwing their names around as if they meant something.

Ditto, and did newson give us the droopy J seat that was failing within months of being deployed?

Just sat on an a330 8 across domestic leg. Anything thinking that less width than this can do 17 hours is mad.

Flight gets $65m in airtime

The avalanche of global publicity surrounding the announcement of the Perth to London nonstopflights service has been valued at more than $65 million.

News of the non*stop flights launch was covered by organisations including the Wall Street Journal,CNN, BBC and the toprating Good Morning America show.

According to Qantas, there were more than 3000 stories in print, online and broadcast coveringthe news since it was announced on Sunday.

The audience coverage is estimated at 772 million.

The figure is just for Australia and international destinations served by Qantas such as London,Los Angeles, New York, Singapore, San Francisco, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

In Australia, there were more than 2000 stories and the were at least 170 stories in Britain.

Local advertising agencies suggest the total global audience and value of all media coverage of theannouncement was more than one billion at a value in excess of $100 million.

Build up to the first service in March 2018 is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollarspublicity for Qantas and WA.

The next big event will be the unveiling of the airline’s groundbreaking new premium economyclass, expected to be announced in Perth in March.

It will be followed a month later with the opening of bookings for the first flights

As I was saying about marketing... When a press release gives you $65m equivalent of advertising

Well, he had every man and his dog in Perth, as well as many wise men from the east, telling him it was a 'no-brainer' to facilitate the launching of this flight for in today's terms, a relatively small amount of dosh.

I am not sure that is accurate. The bit about Geoffrey Thomas being respected that is.

He is the most self-respecting man I've ever known (or heard of).
The are two types people on earth: Those who respect GT ... and those who've met him / heard him / read him.;)
