Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Providing the JQi flights remain at T1, I think it will remain open. For memory there is around 4-5 JQ/3K flights a day to DPS and SIN. In addition, there are 2x EK flights which QC members use the lounge for. Also, MH has now shut their lounge at PER, so use the QF lounge as well as other OW airlines CX and QR. For memory a couple of other airlines also use it as a contract lounge, including the QF codeshare flights to CAN. Prior to QF recommencing their SIN flights it remained open, so this would be similar.

or rebrand to a generic or oneworld/Emirates lounge. Then again maybe with that much third party traffic, the lounge operates at a profit

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

I would certainly consider using a PER-LHR QF service.I would enjoy a stay in WA before or after the flight.
However I doubt that QF will consider JQi in any decision re the lounge in T1 at PER.When qantaslink left SYD T2 so did the QP.The major consideration would be OW partners and I am unsure whether QF would continue operating a lounge for them.

I recall QF operated a lounge internationally in CNS for a while before it was handed over to CX.

The question is whether they are making money from having the lounge there or not I guess. If they are, they could keep it for the 8-9 years until QF moves back, but by then they may want a nicer, bigger space anyway?

They seem to have a minuscule expenditure on food based on the usual offerings, and every time I've been there its been packed to the rafters, so they are probably doing quite well...

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Since when does an airport stump up a bucket load of money almost overwhelmingly just to make money for an airline?

If Perth Airport pays for changes to T3/4, who pays the ongoing labour costs for CBP staff? And where do those extra staff come from?

They do have buckets of money tho. Just see last year's tax statements of BNE domestic... Millions of dollars in profits just in carpark fees.

Australian Airports are run very average due to lack of competition IMHO. Way better than the US but still

Read into this what you will - he doesn't actually mention 'Lounge'.

No - there will be no lounge/club built in T3 for this. PAX would be using one the existing two domestic lounges connecting airside (QP/JL).

What then happens to pax coming in on the aircraft from MEL? If the flight has departed MEL Int, then to use the lounge, they would have to come in through immigration, go to the lounge, back out through immigration and reboard. Not worth the effort.

Of course, if the MEL-PER is actually a flight that has departed MEL Dom, then everyone just alights as a dom pax and goes through Immigration in PER. But if the lounge is landside (as it currently is) then you'll have to do the whole tiresome immigration thing after leaving the lounge. (Yes, yes, I know that's what happens in ADL, but QF is clearly talking about a much bigger operation in PER).

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

So much speculation. We don't even know that the 787 WILL originate in mel. Could just be a dom A330. All in good time people.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Yes, but this change makes award seats even better value than they were before. Unless QANTAS decides to release more award seats (unlikely) with QFF members building up larger and larger points balances an increase in the price for award seats sadly seems a matter of when, not if. If they can get away with charging more points they will.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

A little bit of back to the future for PER T3, which was once the international departure/arrivals side of Perth Airport's passenger terminal. But it was a much smaller footprint back then... (When T1 was opened, and all international services were moved over there, the space at what is now T3 was enlarged significantly to become the Ansett Domestic Terminal and TAA/Australian built out the round section of what is now T4 to increase its presence there, building it over the top of what was previously the common user domestic side of PER's terminal building.)

I wonder if anyone knows when the last Qantas international departure from (what is now) T3 was and where it was to?

This is the one downside to the arrangement.
Having no lounge access after you go through customs and immigration.

Especially if there is a delay after you have passed through immigration

Mr Joyce said that construction of the international western hub would start at the southern end of Terminal 3 in April and would be completed by December and would feature state-of-the-art art custom facilities.
“It will be a premium fit-out in line with our other terminal facilities such as Singapore and Hong Kong,” said Mr Joyce.

Well that leaves the question of what "it" will be.
Apart from the lounge the airline really only owns the check in facilities.
And they do NOT own them in either SIN or HKG - they merely use general airport facilities.
I don't see how the reference to "a premium fit-out in line with ... Singapore and Hong Kong" can sensibly refer to anything other than a so-called merged Premium lounge.
That is the only "Premium" facility which QF has at SIN and HKG.
It would not make sense as a reference to customs facilities as QF has no input whatsoever into the "fit out" of those in SIN or HKG.

I am well aware of the arrangements in ADL but it seems to me that was an airport decision - there is really only an international gate.
I can't imagine where QF would put a dedicated international lounge even if they desperatey wanted one!

It did not stop Qantas at ADL, I doubt it would stop Qantas at PER. It's only one "major" flight each way each day

This arrangement is 'temporary' until the planned "single terminal" build is complete.

Which was targeted for 2025 IIRC, so not likely to be anytime before then

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Mr Joyce said Perth would become a hub??? to were Kalgoorlie ...maybe Broome.... really. Who is going to fly for 5 hours from the east coast in economy, when they can hop on an international flight in the east and get a better seat and hopefully better in flight service. Trans continental flights are not cheap and added to the international flight it would be very expensive. Seems to me to be just a flight for WA. Also how can the cost of setting up customs and immigration in domestic for a daily in and out flight be justified. WA Gov must paying a lot to placate Qantas.

as mentioned elsewhere it's also for the daily per-sin and less regular per-akl services.

And arguably the customs and immigration running costs are covered by the fees, and less officers will be needed in T1
