QF Club vs QF J Lounge @ SYD - What's the difference?

The gents in the QP is what you might expect from a public concourse in a very small airport in some third world county.
It's not that bad. If you want to see bad, try the United Club at San Francisco's International Terminal G (which used to be their former GlobalFirst lounge). Last time I went, half the faucets weren't working, half the urinals and toilets were taped up, and the ones that weren't looked like they were last flushed when Ronald Reagan was President. Absolutely vile, disgusting restrooms which make the sort of restrooms I saw at CGK or CAI seem reasonable! 🤢

I'll grant you that description of the SFO set-up but HBA QP is as described . I was at CAI domestic and international last month. Toilets were fine - that's what paying 5 EGP per visit gets you. 🙂

First time flying QF in several months after consciously moving away from them, but they had classic reward availability on SYD-BNE tonight and cash fares were bonkers.

In the Domestic Business lounge at SYD now en route to BNE.

The space feels virtually identical to the Qantas Club. If this is a food upgrade from QC, I don’t want to know what’s over there today. They seem to be rationing out a half dozen minimally filled prawn rolls every half hour or so and there are literally several older pax standing up to “check” every 5 minutes.

The flight is also now delayed. “Your ticket doesn’t allow you to catch an earlier flight,” was the friendly reply when I asked about availability on an earlier option that wasn’t as delayed “might be possible.”

I was also barked at — “you’re in the wrong place it seems” — upon entry when the lounge dragon saw my boarding pass and measly Gold status. “I know where I am,” I said, “I linked my ‘apology’ lounge invite to this reservation.” She demanded to see the email and finally waved me in without a word.

I’ll continue to stick with VA where I can.

From Virgin Red to Virgin Platinum (didn’t even status match) and on track to retain Virgin Platinum again in 2023.

Nice work, QF; keep it up. 🙃

Depending on routing, yes QF fares can be quite pricey. Every QF trip I pay out of pocket, I will almost always book either as a classic award or during a promotion. For instance, I booked SYD > MEL > AKL > SYD > MEL for ~$1100 earlier this year during the double status credit promotion and will earn 480 status credits on the flight. Given it is not unusual to find trans-tassie fares to be roughly half the cost at the back of the bus, that was one heck of a deal! Contrast this to me flying SYD > CHC earlier this month which was around the same price at the back of the bus booked through my employer (who no doubt has a negotiated rate with QF).

I'd argue that the Qantas Club is the luxury lounge compared to the Qantas Business lounge for the simple fact that you get way better views of take offs and landing. Also, there tends to be fewer business folk yelling on their phones about some business deal we could care less about. "Do you know who I am?," evidently not since you aren't in the Chairman's Lounge 😂

Uhh that's not how that works. When an airline delays your flight or makes a significant schedule change that ticket becomes fully flexible. If this weren't the case, there would be a lot of stranded passengers with no ticket at SYD airport since their flight got cancelled. If there are two things I adore the most when flying it is the announcement that my flight is delayed or better yet cancelled. It gives me that rare opportunity to tell the airline exactly the flight I always wanted and not pay a dime extra for it. Case in point, when I travelled to CBR earlier this month my return non-stop flight was cancelled. Instead of choose from the many other nonstop options back, I opted for a connecting flight in Melbourne, which combined with the fact the ticket was booked during the double status credit promotion, meant that the $149 red e-deal fare earned 40 status credits instead of 20!

Wow - it looks like we have another form of discrimination at airports: boarding pass discrimination! Just by looking at the colour of your boarding pass they could instantly tell that you were a clear and present danger to those ASX 200 executives yelling at their phone in the Qantas Business lounge. Generally speaking I don't tell the lounge agent anything and just dump the boarding pass onto the barcode scanner. That's my process for every lounge that does the boarding pass scan. Better to do that then to show the boarding pass and be barked at by someone who only sees the colour of your boarding pass.
I’ll continue to stick with VA where I can.
You do you mate! There are certainly benefits to both programs. I will, however, say that Qantas does generally tend to have better award availability based on the simple fact that they have many more award partners than Virgin. Virgin tends to have better lounge food, but Qantas tends to have better amenities in terms of things like showers. Another big benefit of Qantas is of course access to the Emirates lounges in SYD and MEL when flying QF internationally.
No difference according to the FAQs on the SYD airport website:

Website is missing the Plaza Premium Arrivals lounge at T1 International!

You are of course conflating domestic and international flying in that paragraph.

Sure, Qantas might have more award availability – if you want to fly economy, or an airline other than Qantas! 🤣 The emirates lounges are certainly nice, but I wouldn’t fly a particular airline just to get a certain pre-flight lounge!

I’m happy to leave my QFF Plat status parked for now & fly Virgin domestically and Qatar and other VA partners internationally ( but also AY and LH where needs be) at lane until QFF and the airline get back to a semblance to what they used to be.

And QF First lounge
Uhh I believe that's what they mean when they refer to Qantas Club 😉
Having never been to the QF First lounge but having been to the Emirates lounge at Sydney I think I'm in a position to state that the Emirates lounge is the better lounge!

Even in terms of domestic flying I would say Qantas is ahead of Virgin. Better lounges, better aircraft (i.e. the A330s down to MEL), better upgrade system where you can instant upgrade into J from a cheap $99 red e-deal fare, etc. One other thing a lot of QF flyers fail to mention (perhaps due to unwarranted embarrassment) is QF loves to cancel flights and do schedule changes. Now look, I get it some people don't enjoy the dynamism offered by these changes, but for those of us strategically planning our trips it's a boon. It means we can book the cheapest flight on QF (typically nonstop) then wait for QF to cancel our flight or schedule change allowing us to choose the flight we really wanted at no extra cost (including connecting flights that earn more status credits). What's more Qantas offers cheaper economy awards than Virgin on domestic flights if you choose a JetStar classic award. Given the operational challenges at JQ this usually means your flight gets cancelled or schedule changed and you can go onto the QF website and choose a QF flight to replace the cancelled JQ flight at no additional cost.

Or, all economy B717s up to MEL 🤣

Errr. Yes 🤣🤣

I’m not sure if your fascination and appreciation of Qantas cancelling many flights so you can get an alternative is a joke or not but in any case, it’s quite bizarre.

With Virgin’s commonly cheaper fares in economy and business, I can choose the flight I want AND the time I want and still come out ahead. YM, as they say, MV 😊

I have no problem with people like yourself and many others here, preferring Qantas over its opposition. And it’s sometimes amusing to see those turn yourself around and around like that pretzel you mention a few times, trying to justify it though. :)

No joke, I'm quite serious with all of this. Over the past year I've earned 60 additional status credits with Qantas thanks to cancellations which works out to 10% of the number of status credits required to re-qualify for Gold. At no additional cost to me with the added benefit of visiting additional Qantas lounges for free!

In fairness, I am travelling Virgin down to ADL today from OOL on a $400 J fare which will net me 80 status credits - just enough to match to Virgin Gold from QF Gold . The primary reason I'm looking to get Virgin Gold status isn't for Virgin benefits itself - after all I don't need Virgin status to get complimentary access into the Virgin lounge as an AmEx Platinum cardholder. Instead, I need it for the partner benefits on AC and UA.

Sometimes the best food in lounges are pretzels, especially if at the LH lounge! 😂

That assumes Qantas gold status ( if you don’t like “WP”, then you are going to love “SG” 😊) is worth having AND and that Qantas lounges are worth visiting 😊. But then again, you don’t mind Hobart 😳.

Don’t get me wrong, some Qantas lounges are very good and worth spending an hour or two in before a flight. Qantas First in Sydney comes to mind. But I can use that flying Qatar.

More seriously, you may have fallen into the trap of gaming the system for the sake of it. Not weighing up if the abysmal performance of Qantas in other areas - in-flight, most lounges, website, customer assistance, etc is worth the time and hassle of gaming the system. Best of luck 😊

Ps you may want to delete the pic of the boarding pass,

I set my expectations low for an airport like HBA, hence I'm rarely disappointed!

In fairness, I plan on flying with a number of OneWorld partners over the coming months including American, British Airways and perhaps even BA. In that respect having the extra checked bags, seating and lounge access can be beneficial. The last year or so of flying have mostly been domestic simply since that was all that was frankly possible due to border closures and other restrictions.
Ps you may want to delete the pic of the boarding pass,
You may wish to cover name, barcode etc from that BP image.. just sayin'
Unsure what you lot are talking about 😂

Dreaded 4 S.
Yeah and I've got Global Entry and Pre-Check, go figure! That being said, I tend to run into hassles flying out of Germany. Once I flew from Frankfurt to Detroit and couldn't check in online. Going to the airport the check-in agents were adamant that a Canadian must have an ESTA, despite the fact that Canada is not part of the US' Visa Waiver Program (we're part of the visa on arrival program that only a handful of countries have). It took calling a station manager to get that one sorted out!

Seeing that BP I do kind of miss Tegel airport (was flying TXL > DUS > LAS enroute to KIX on UA)
