QF WP First Test Cricket Report - Australia v New Zealand @ The Gabba

Am I only one who thought this series was going to be competitive? It is a one sided walk in the park. New Zealand making ordinary batsmen look like superstars. 2nd test over in first session.

Oh and the West Indies named arguably the worst team to leave their shores on an overseas tour. Was it Brian Lara in tears the other day discussing the upcoming tour?

So how's that first session working for you Johnk ?
Much better. At 2/400+ New Zealand were cruising and I thought there's a chance of an upset. Then McCullum gone and at 3 down their long tail is exposed.

Yep. Not too many quality batsmen in the side I have to say.

What's the result?
Australia by a whisker after quick wickets in morning and quick runs tomorrow afternoon.

Seriously our bowlers are ordinary. I know Australia won the First test easily but New Zealand still scored 300+ in each innings and they have now scored 500+ this test.

And Taylor is still going - Kiwi's now just passed Australia's First innings total ... 2 wkts left ...

All out for 624 - a lead of 65 runs on the first inning.

Ross Taylor's 290 is the highest by an opposing cricketer in Australia and the second highest ever against Australia in a test.<br>

Now for some quick wickets ... :D

At lunch, Australia survived the only over to be bowled and are 0/0. I think some more batting practice is in order. Bet there'll be some Australian physios working overtime on sore muscles this afternoon ... and Ross Taylor could be excused for fielding, unless he wants to do an Usman...

Batting practice is right. We can be ~250 runs in front by the close of play tonight.

I was just reading the Courier Mail article hinting Johnson will retire today and then tuned in to Cricinfo to read the news.

Johnson wasn't one of my favourites but he will go down as one of the greats in the game. And a decent batting average too.

His last ball in international cricket:

98.5
Southee to Johnson, OUT, Johnson is out, he walks back to warm applause. That's that, at least with the bat in international cricket. Back of a length and outside off, not all that short. He sets up for a pull and edges it behind, Watling pouches it. And Johnson walks back with 29 more runs than what Bradman scored in his last Test
MG Johnson c †Watling b Southee 29 (45b 5x4 0x6) SR: 64.44

Eeek, we've declared after the loss of a couple of wickets, the final one....

100.3
Southee to Nevill, OUT, edged and caught behind ahead. Full outswinger, seduces Nevill into a drive. He only gets an outside edge, a healthy one and feeds a simple catch to his opposite number. Fourth wicket for Southee
PM Nevill c †Watling b Southee 35 (83b 5x4 0x6) SR: 42.16

Then Starc got into a groove with 4's and a 6, to end 28 n.o. and Australia was 7/383 when:

2:03pm: Alright, Smith calls (or rather whistles) Hazlewood and Starc in, like this. The target reads 321 in a minimum of 48 overs.

So, here we go, hold onto your seats. Will NZ try and get the runs?
