QF zeroing flights - cancellation impending?

Even domestically there seems to be lots of changes going on. Lots of cutting flights - even well into the future. Some of my SYD-MEL flights have been cancelled as well as MEL-PER flights
Indeed. I have been watching PER-MEL fares for early May and looks like QF has dropped two flights from the daily schedule. Down to just two direct QF flights (and 2 jetstar - noooooo thanks).

Would some of those have been A330's I wonder? If so, those could be due to rescheduling aircraft for other routes. Just a thought.

Domestic is still a gamble to be honest. Even close in.

as example a friend was booked on a 1300 MEL-SYD yesterday. A few weeks back it was cancelled (not zero'd) and friend moved flights. on Monday I happened to look at the flights and what do you reckon? the 1300 flight was back! Not sure when it had come back, but was there. I can only presume the aircraft was going to SYD to fund another flight they needed - possibly related to the weather on the east coast.. not sure of course.. but that was sure weird. Friend was not amused as she had an extra hour added to her connection she didn't need or want.

Nope actually 737 flights, now only 3 X A330 flights remaining on that day, no 737 flights. (MEL-PER)

This is while JQ has 3 flights for sale and VA has 8.....i wonder if there are crew shortages.

Can she change it back?
oh did not try. I mean I only told her the night before the flight and I think she couldn't be bothered - and I am sure QF would have wanted to charge her for the pleasure to get back on her original flight so it just wasn't a thought (and with the weather and things going on n SYD I probably wouldn't have tried either just having more of a buffer rather than less would probably be a good thing).

Aaaaannnnd now QF have canned my MEL-PER flight in early May, and switched me to a later one, which is not great, and switched me from an A330 to a B737, which is super annoying.

Annoying for sure, but if it's actually been cancelled, and not zeroed out, then it's a different situation.

Crikey! They have also removed from the booking page the last two QF PER-MEL flights for the day I was looking at (5th of May). NO direct QF flights available to book on that day! What is going on??

now this may be related :(

the 5 flights still show, but all are zeroed out. However it's hard to know if they're full and will run, or some will go away. Very odd indeed.

Looking at 766 though for example, a 737, the seat map is only about 10% full. Now this is not a fullproof indication, but it could be some consolidation is going on.

It does seem odd near two months away from the flight date though I agree.

Not a flight zeroing, but a cr@p change and maybe some funny business with it that I may have to chase up by phone with QF.

I am booked PER-DRW return in September.

Originally booked as paid whY fares and upgraded. Birds were listed as B738.

Notification today that flights have changed to QLink (Network Aviation) A320s. So whY-only.

In MMB my original fare class shows as U. Now it shows as X - but of course it never was X.

Nothing in the notification about refunding my UPG points.

Does anyone know whether that will happen automatically once I've accepted the change?

Plenty if this going on, SYD-BNE is affected too and I bet other routes as well. Sometimes downgrades from 330s to the boring 737, sometimes just specific flights cancelled.

But as annoying as this is, nothing compared to some of the international examples here. And those “equipment changes” and flight cancellation were a thing per Covid already too.

I think there's more to it than "lack of demand", domestically at least, there has to be crew shortage or something.

Looking at flying MEL-PER in June there 1 flight, $400+ for QF but yet JQ have 3 flights and VA have 4 daily.

Morning all.

I'm new at this and looking for some advice.

I have 4 return flights from Melbourne to Haneda in J (1 paid, 3 reward) leaving at the end of March and returning on April 19.

Clearly these flights are not going to operate but with less than 2 weeks to go I have still not heard anything from Qantas (despite ringing several times)

My questions are:
- In other people's experience how late to Qantas leave it before contacting people about these flights?
- When Qantas does eventually cancel the flights, am I likely to be offered the opportunity to move the flights to a later date or will they just be cancelled and refunded (given I have 3 J award flights, my preference would be to move to a later date in June but there is obviously no reward availability at this time).

Thanks heaps

I'm guessing you're talking about QF 79/80?

yes on April 19 QF 80 has only 3 allocated seats in J and 4(!) in Y. all zeroed out.

obviously the paid fare will have more options than the reward fare. That one will get flex options to move. Reward seats... well it will depend on availability I would presume.

Can anybody with a better understanding of this zeroing out situation please help? We are looking at flying on Sunday 27th March on QF23 Syd - Bkk and were wondering if this flight is going ahead. The reason I ask is that QF23 is listed as flying Monday, Wednesday and Saturday - so we don't want to book and pay for accommodation etc for a Sunday arrival if the flight isn't looking to proceed. Cheers in advance

This flight is not zero’d out. All indications are it is operating.

I don’t know where you’re seeing Mo/We/Sa. It appears to be every day except Tuesday and Thursday.

its always seemed to depart at 10:30 but as of Sunday 27th March this changes to 10:50 - is that normal for a flight time chnage?

March 27 is the beginning of the Winter (or northern summer if you prefer) scheduling period) this is common to have schedule changes start from this boundary date. This is an international convention.

Thanks Richard, you're a wealth of knowledge!

This article gives more information on the IATA schedules for anyone that cares :)

(nothing QF can and will change their own schedules of course, as we all know, but for decades the IATA broad "seasons" twice a year had been the major major schedule blocks for flights). Things have changed somewhat in recent times, but it is still a boundary of sorts for schedule changes
