QF zeroing flights - cancellation impending?

Would some of those have been A330's I wonder? If so, those could be due to rescheduling aircraft for other routes. Just a thought.

Domestic is still a gamble to be honest. Even close in.

as example a friend was booked on a 1300 MEL-SYD yesterday. A few weeks back it was cancelled (not zero'd) and friend moved flights. on Monday I happened to look at the flights and what do you reckon? the 1300 flight was back! Not sure when it had come back, but was there. I can only presume the aircraft was going to SYD to fund another flight they needed - possibly related to the weather on the east coast.. not sure of course.. but that was sure weird. Friend was not amused as she had an extra hour added to her connection she didn't need or want.
Im thinking the ruling factor here at present is seat yield. If the flights dont reach their break even point they simply cancel/reschedule so they can achieve profitability. I dont think any of the airlines have the cash liquidity to burn at all in the current climate.

I stupidly booked a paid return flight in J class to Japan MEL-Haneda for late May QF 79. Due to the article I checked online and Qantas.com - it is now showing that there is no QF79 available for new bookings - only MEL-SYD-Haneda on the day/surrounding dates. Even though it is still showing up in my bookings as QF79 it is evident that it has been cancelled/wiped. How long do you think it will be before QF notifies me of the cancellation/ re-routing? It will be interesting to see if they offer a refund as this would be my preferred option- although reluctant to cancel myself now as I don't want to fall in the trap of getting a flight credit. Overlaying all this is the fact that Japan hasn't even announced when it is opening to tourists. Fingers crossed on all fronts EDIT: Even the QF website where are we flying lists that Australia Japan is not starting until 'Late July".
An Update: Today have been notifed via QF App that the QF79 has been cancelled, and we are being forced on to Mel-Syd and then QF 25 Syd-Haneda to arrive the next morning instead. As I am morally opposed to International Transit in Sydney ( & the direct flight was my main reason for booking) I will be playing call centre Frogger over the next few days to organise a refund of the cash paid. Wish me luck!

Update #2 : called 1300 at 7.15, said wait time was 15 min. Got through to an operator at 7.45 who put refund request through which took about 10 minutes on the phone. Line was clear, and could hear some strong Australian accent in the back - so I think it was Hobart call centre. QF Gold Member. Pleasantly surprised considering some of the stories on here. I'll update here when $ hits the card for general intel.

Nice!

I’ve booked two business rewards seats on QF18 from LAX-SYD on 1/9/22. It appears that this flight is now zeroed from the checks I’ve done.
If this is the case is Qantas likely to rebook those two seats on QF12?

I believe that is right. Whether you have booked through QFFF, or are using another Oneworld FF program, QF will accommodate you on another one of their flights.

Before you get too excited…. that reaccomodation won’t necessarily match up with any other connecting flights in your itinerary, and might not even be on the same day as you were originally scheduled!

But if booked through QFFF it should be an easy change, once you get through, and if you get a competent agent.

Looking for some help here. Booked and paid stupid $$ for 2 RT Bus Class (can’t remember fare code) QF11 SYD-JFK via LAX. Leaving Easter Saturday. Ticketed on AA via Codeshare.

Syd-Lax No longer showing for sale on either QF or AA website, and both zeroed out on expert flyer. We are less than a week out and it’s a busy route generally.

I’m panicking (I have anxiety over these types of things, and 2+ years out of practice doesn’t help!

Questions: any chance the flight isn’t going to be cancelled and they’re just not selling as they’ve been cancelling a few QF7 to DFW recently, and need the space on QF11 to reaccommodate those cancelled passengers, so pulled it for sale? If not, and it’s cancelled, when should I hear officially? And lastly (most important) when they rebook me, I assume it will be in the same class of service (likely another day or via DFW, or on AA plane another day). We paid over $25k for 2 tickets and while my mud and can fly Econ, I can’t due to medical reasons. I’m just super anxious about the flight cancellation but not notification and what’s next.

I think there’s almost zero chance of Qantas cancelling the QF11. Have you had a look to see if the QF12 is still operating the reverse? It leaves LAX something like 9pm.

I suspect you are right that they are holding seats to accommodate pax from cancelled services. A couple weeks ago the 11 was full in both premium cabins, and about 80% full in economy… with those number they won’t cancel.

In the event it was cancelled, QF will accommodate you in the same class of travel on another service… so via MEL, DFW, YVR etc. Possibly even via London. QF won’t risk losing your $12500 per passenger!

Edit: just looked and EF seat maps show the zeroed out flight as quite full in all classes. Same day before. Hoping they are zeroed out to save capacity for reassigned passengers from a previous cancelled flight?

Thanks MEL Traveller! Just looked and they are still selling QF12 on the return leg and it’s on expert flyer. That puts my mind at ease a bit.

But now I see that they’ve zeroed out the incoming QF12 from the night before, which could mean they just aren’t bringing the plane back to Syd after the SYD-LAX on the 15th.

As we are ticketed by AA, will QF cancelling be more hassle or will there be a better chance of getting on AA73 the day before or after (they don’t fly on the day we are actually ticketed)?

I'm looking at flights to Honolulu (HNL) in late April with Qantas and having the same sort of problem. Sydney to HNL showing "no results found" on any date despite listing prices.
Fly Hawaiian Airlines and get some Velocity points

I can only assume this is so they can hold onto passengers' money for longer,
For the other reason that by holding on to the booking and cancelling close to travel, the customer has less chance of going to another airline because prices rise the closer to travel date. This way, the airline cancels but has a higher chance of retaining the customer

Except the incoming QF12 is from 2 nights before (14th, the Thu night ex-LAX) … which is not zeroed out. I think you’ll be fine.

Agree. short of a wing falling off the aircraft they won't cancel it. It's likely just totally full because.. well.. Easter Saturday. Super peak travel period.

Plus QF usually cancels well before a week out if it is going to.

I am very confident all will be OK also.

Silly me forgetting about the losing a day thing. Thank you Richard and dajop for the reassurance.

I checked the seating capacity and the few QF11 flights that are zeroed (including mine) are pretty full. I’m just so out of practice in long haul that I just don’t need the stress of a cancelled flight (and all the issues going on with check-in and security). Getting to the connection at LAX will be enough of a stress given the flight hasn’t made it on time bar twice in the past 2 weeks!

As of a couple weeks ago there were also no automatic gates at LAX…. all processing was via manual interview. The lines were long, and ultra slow. I would estimate at least and hour, maybe more, for pax who were among the last to make it to the immigration hall from the QF 11.

Thanks. I’m a US citizen with Global Entry, so hope that helps with speed. My partner is Kiwi, so he will be stuck in the non-US queue.

I noted there is another potential connection 2 hours after our booked one, so hopefully it’s a backup (although it doesn’t have enough seats in Biz left.

We will do our best to be off the plane early and rush to the hall. Thanks for the info!
