BREAKING: QF32 SIN-SYD suffers engine failure

QF32, an Airbus A380 flying SIN-SYD carrying 432 PAX has returned to SIN after suffering an engine failure over the Indonesian island of Batam.

Initial reports, photography and on-the-ground details are concurring that the left inboard engine suffered a failure, and that parts of the cowling were dislodged and made landfall.

More details as it comes to hand.

Update 1 (11:34 AWST): A SMH journalist is reporting that QF32 is involved, and despite wire reports has not crashed at all but experienced engine trouble and is en-route to SIN for emergency landing, with all pax safe at this stage.

Update 2 (11:36 AWST): ABC News has confirmation from an Indonesian official that there has not been a crash, and is a case of engine trouble. They have also attributed original story of plane crashing en-route to SIN to Kyodo news wire.

Update 3 (11:40 AWST): A photo has been posted online moments ago purporting to show QF32 with smoke coming from the left inboard engine.

Update 4 (11:45 AWST): Australian Associated Press has quote from QF official on record confirming that reports from Kyodo news wire are incorrect.

Qantas flight QF32 was enroute from Singapore to Sydney, the number two engine has shut down, so as a precautionary measure we are taking it back to Singapore," A Qantas spokeswoman told AAP.

"It should land in about 40 minutes," she said at 1430 AEDT.

Update 5 (11:49 AWST)
: Earlier photo source has been confirmed, taken over Indonesia by a member of Airliners.net.

Update 6 (11:51 AWST): As posted by docjames, Sydney Morning Herald now has story, and is stating that Reuters reported a claim that QF stated to CNBC that the A380 had crashed. Witness reports are stating that the plane was over the Indonesian island of Batam when they heard the explosion.

Update 7 (11:56 AWST): Indonesian television now has pictures of debris at Batam, and according to reports it looks like parts of the engine cowling that have made landfall as a result of the engine failure.

Update 8 (12:01 AWST): Reuters reporting that Singaporean TV stations confirming that flight has landed at SIN.

Update 9 (12:09 AWST): ABC News now also confirming Singaporean TV reports that plane landed safely.

Update 10 (12:14 AWST): Photo purporting to be from PAX aboard flight shows damage to wing surface after plane landed at SIN.

``I can see smoke coming out of it,'' the reporter said.

Re: BREAKING: Alledged incident involving QF flight over Indonesian airspace

a bit more

A Qantas A380 has been forced to return to Singapore's Changi Airport after pilots were forced to shut down one of its four engines.
QF32 was bound for Sydney when the engine failed.
A Qantas spokesman said the problems were with engine number two. She did not know why the engine had to be shut down.
The incident sparked widespread rumours over the internet through Twitter, which Qantas said were wildly inaccurate.

Kompas, a leading Indonesia newspaper, had reported on its website that it was "suspected that a Qantas plane exploded in the air near Batam".
The website report provided no source for the story.
An eyewitness, Hana, told Indonesia's Metro television that she saw a plane that was on fire overhead before hearing a loud explosion.

Yeah, my boss was reading the Japanese website when he told me a Qantas A380 had exploded. I met it with cynicism and said, "surely just and engine shut down".

Hopefully that's all there is to it.

Rumors of a QF crash in Indonesia

Apparently a lot of the chinese whispers came from twitter according to Paul Murray on 6PR.

There is a massive difference between an engine failure and what was being reported.

Depending on what happened to the engine, perhaps a few bits came off and were found on the island.

and Batan Island is close enough Tiger could drive a golf ball from Singapore - darn A380's - teething problems, another reason to still not fly on them!

Geoffrey Thomas says it's a similar failure to the one at SFO.

Plane has now landed at SIN

Re: BREAKING: Alledged incident involving QF flight over Indonesian airspace

Try this for a dog's breakfast:

Yeah, particularly the bit below:

Meanwhile, Elfhinta radio quoted a police officer in Batam, Eryana, saying some of the plane had been found.
"We are still collecting debris," he said.
"It looked like a big plane. Like a Boeing 737 – 400. It looks like Qantas because of the red and white colour."

Perhaps the police officer in Batam should stick to policing if he can't tell the difference between an A380 & a B737-400.

I'm not surprised that the media printed that because as usual their knowledge about anything to do with aircraft or aviation is woeful at the best of times.

Re: BREAKING: Alledged incident involving QF flight over Indonesian airspace

It almost sounds like two seperate incidents.
Reports of peices of plane and Qantas just saying there is engin trouble

Will have to wait until it lands

Unreal - SKY NEWS showing a A330 landing somewhere, then next breath saying this is the plane, then next breath saying 430PAX. Darn squeezed in if thats the case... Ryan Air taken over QF overnight?

Nope, everything available right now suggests this is a single incident.

Indonesian TV have footage of the engine cowling that made landfall, and looks like it's from a QF A380.

You can use this up-close photo of a QF A380 cowling shot at Avalon last year to compare against the Indonesian TV footage of the debris that made landfall.

Basically, a whole ton of wire services started reporting stuff before they had all the facts and thus got the story completely and utterly wrong.

Just landed singapore. Qf 32. Fuel dumped after takeoff. A380 quite serious being a new plane and engine. Cowlings off etc. Qf taking it seriously

Airbus issues?

Are you suggesting Tiger Airlines hit a golf ball at the A380 to try and take out one of the engines?:D
