QF32 388 - emergency landing in SIN after Engine failure

Slightly valid point. Some guy on PPrune:

"Rather explosive engine failure, burn marks on the outside of the cowel and all.

Batam's about 10km south of 20L....what's a Stinger worth in that part of the world?"

Great timing for the board to go down.

I note that on Sky News they reported there were 3 captains onboard. Wonder if one of them was jb747.

It was also reported on Sky News that this was their first A380, and I thought, well if that's so, didn't they recently have a C-check?

I was wondering both those things. I trust JB747's A-Ok if onboard. No doubt a lengthy debrief.

Do we have the rego yet? IIRC it was -OQA that had the first C-check recently.

True.

In my opinion, this incident is much less embarrassing than bumping into a wall whilst being towed.

Bear in mind that engines are not necessarily on the same service schedule as the airframe.

That’s what I was thinking, it’s a different manufacturer (to the rest of the airframe) so might not be included. We need an expert to tell us if the engines would have been inspected too.

But it’s certainly been looked at fairly recently, so it’s all interesting.

True.

Much more serious too though.

I do think another safe landing after a scare and reports of calm crew and pax onboard can only be good for Qantas’ reputation as it shows they’re still safe, despite the little bumps.

Sky reported their shares dropped 15¢ initially when it was believed to be a crash, but recovered quickly when it was found to just be an emergency landing. Funny that, they only dropped 15¢ initially, not much :p

Also, from the images I just saw on Sky, it looks like pax didn’t take personal belongings with them. Certainly everyone coming down the stairs had no bags with them.

QF ENGINEER of 42 years reported by Sky News - High pressure compressor failure, reported as similar to SFO incident.

The tech heads can discuss the merits of this statement.

Just listening to Alan Joyce on ABC Newsradio (press conference) - all A380 services "suspended until QF safety requirements are met". Timeframe not given, but "until airbus and investigation determine safe to fly". and "until we are comfortable we understand the reasons for this and determine it's ssafe to fly".

Usual media baiting questions, trying to imply the A380 isnt safe to fly.

Pax to be overnighted in SIN (paid by QF) and then replacement aircraft / other flights to accomodate them.

"First issue with engine failure" and suspension of services not due to previous issues with A380.

Already working with Airbus and RR to investigate. Most line maintenance in Australia, confirming Lufthansa does major work. No comment on what RR maintenance has been done.

Joyce says all A380 takeoffs suspended until they’re sure everything is OK!

Beaten by Sam!

But yes, I just seen ABC News post that on twitter.

(edit: and caught the last of the press conference on ABC).

Just listening to ABC News 24's interview with ATSB's Ian Sangston, and thankfully he's a very sensible bloke and making sure none of Ally's questions get in the way of facts and common sense.

Hehe.

So seems like he deflected any sort of spin the unions were giving based on overseas maintenance with his answer of Australia and German maintenance (and any reporter that would care to dig would see Lufthansa are infinitely better than what we have here).

Also pretty much confirmed the C-check has nothing to do with the engines, so lets hope RR is able to work out what’s wrong pretty quickly. I see SIA and LH also use the RR engines, so presumably they will want to know what the cause was quickly too.

I'd imagine there is spare 747 capacity at the moment. What is interesting is how long the A380's will be out for.

As for a bit of humour, I agree that the comments section on nonews website is a good source for it!

Maybe this is airline karma taking revenge for removing anytime access? :P

(Note: I am being sarcastic and this should not be taken as an indication some disgruntled WP has done anything to jeopardize the safety of an aircraft.)

They better leave my 4 configuration 744 between Sydney and Bangkok on Sunday alone... I want my First upgrade to come through! Cant do that on an A330...

There is surprisingly some quite level headed comments coming across from the experts, pity the media is baiting

IIRC the C-Check was done by Lufthansa Technik.

Yes we all know how shoddy German engineering is  .... Any AUS unions saying anything about AUS standards vs overseas?

Well done to the QF crew!

From memory, this would be the first uncontained engine failure for an A380?

Is it the first in flight engine failure for an A380?

Impressed that SIN sprayed the foam around the place!
