QF32 388 - emergency landing in SIN after Engine failure

I would be surprised if it was dragged into an Airbus v Boeing debate. However is it co-incidence that both "engine issues" were on RR engines? I don't know, but am waiting for the reports of both before I speculate;)
While both were manufactured by RR and both suffered uncontained failures, we have no idea yet if the causes were similar. There is quite a difference between the two engine types, one being a RB211-524G/H-T and the other being a Trent 972-84. Quite different designs and likely few interchangeable/common parts.

However I am more interested to wait and see what jb747 says.
Indeed, more likely to get factual, unbiased response than from some others.
I note that on Sky News they reported there were 3 captains onboard. Wonder if one of them was jb747.
Hmm, if so he may be up for yet another set of underwear/trousers .

Either way, it seems he may in for some R&R (and that is nothing to do with an engine manufacturer) while office is grounded for a while.

Nevertheless the Trent 900 series is a development of the RB211, indeed FAA directives refer to is as the RB211-trent 900 series. For example, see Federal Register | Airworthiness Directives; Rolls-Royce plc (RR) RB211-Trent 900 Series Turbofan Engines

They better leave my 4 configuration 744 between Sydney and Bangkok on Sunday alone... I want my First upgrade to come through! Cant do that on an A330...

There is surprisingly some quite level headed comments coming across from the experts, pity the media is baiting

munitalP

The media are not that clever, just have a nose for sensationalism.

I have been impressed with sky news coverage and the tempered comments of experts.

Starting to talk about RR's potential liabilities!

The latest SMH article is suggesting Joyce said flights to Perth would be delayed. I guess this would indicate the 747s that have been flying transcon will pick up the slack.

The QF website is showing QF31 now delayed by 2.5 hours meaning its arrival into SIN isn't scheduled now until 1am which I guess means passengers miss connecting flights to Europe. Oh dear. The domino effect.

That is not good. How could an engine failure cause a cargo door to fall off? Vibrations within the structure?

At least this didn't happen: YouTube - The Front Fell Off!

Haha, never seen that, very funny!

Just noticed something. What is the bit that is in the red circle?

Looks like that could be what they were referring to with the cargo door bit, though that’s not a door I don’t think.

Interesting hole. I’m not even going to bother beginning to speculate.

Maybe the engine failure was due to ingesting a cargo door

Pretty wild speculation there NM :p :o

Looking at the image SMH now has of the engine, I think the engine debris at Batam are an unassailable match for QF32:

This clip shows what RR expects to happen to these $15M engines when a fan blade breaks loose:

Gotta love channel 10.
In just one segment, the plane exploded, the engine exploded, the engine fell off and the plane was engulfed in a plume of smoke.

Give us a break!!!!!!!

Re: QF 32 A380 out of action - who is inconvenienced?

Does anyone think SQ, EY and AF will ground their 380's?

If the plane exploded it wouldn't have landed in one piece would it Channel 10 - der!

Okay so the engine might have exploded.

If the engine fell off, why is it still attached to the wing Channel 10 - der!

A piece of cowling (metal casing surrounding engine) fell off the engine - there is a difference.

Maybe some of these journo's should attend the course "Aviation for Idiots", oh silly me they already have!

Was just wondering the same thing (though I think it's EK, and maybe LH also?)...do they use the same engines as QF I wonder.

My wife is already scared witless of flying (took a good chunk out of my arm with her fingernails on one bumpy flight).

We're heading off to europe in about 4 weeks, including (at this stage, anyway) a leg SIN-LHR on an A380.
... sigh .... will be an interesting discussion when I call her tonight.

Perhaps she hasn't heard ;)
