How about just stop comping people who don't make the published requirements? I wonder what proportion of Platinum members did not make the 1200 SCs required for re-qualification last year?

Actually enforcing the published rules seems to be a bit of a problem. Such as for requalification but also in other areas as well. (e.g. anytime access to J lounge, double SC promotions, I'm sure there are a few others that I can't remember right now). Qantas' answer seems to be remove the benefit instead of actually enforce things, which is a bizarre approach especially when it is going to upset the people who are achieving things in line with the published rules and then have the benefit taken away.

Leaving aside the wisdom or otherwise of complimentary retentions, a cessation of the practice would simply lead to such people accessing lounges as Gold, rather than Platinum, members surely? So, zero sum game ... or am I missing something?

To an extent. I think that getting comped once is fine. There can be a variety of reasons why someone might have a "slow" year of air travel. Getting comped 2 or 3 years running is a joke IMO.

Comp'ing happens at every level, not just Platinum.

double SC promotions,

Such promotions, though, can be great tools to drive incremental sales. On this board, I dare say there were several people who undertook some extra flying to take advantage of the promotion. Perhaps more promotions might be a good thing.

I understand where you are coming from, but I seriously doubt this would have any effect on lounge overcrowding.

Hi NM.

I don't think ANYTHING, aside from larger lounges will prevent overcrowding. I was being a bit tongue in cheek with my post. :)

I still think that increasing the number of qualifying sectors will help adress Red Roo's initial initial request for suggestions.

I agree, although if you set the bar too high, and 20 may be too high, it may cause some to not bother trying, which may lose you some business.

I am one who got targeted with the Double SC Promo earlier in the year and did do extra flights to attain WP. More promo's would be fine with me.

:)

If QANTAS is SERIOUSLY concerned about overcrowding due to "anytime access" by WP's.... Here's a hint. Instead of increasing the SC's needed to attain WP or remove the benefit.... Increase the number of "sectors flown" requirement, from 4 to 20! Having been a VERY loyal QF customer for many years, I HATE to see my benefits continually eroded!

This. Brilliant idea. I guess only QF would be able to see if there are a substantial number of Gold and Platinum members flying the bare minimum of QF sectors to maintain status (AFF is hardly a representative sample after all) -- but if there are, raise the number of sectors required to maintain a status level. Maybe something like 4 for Silver, 8 for Gold and 16 for Platinum.

Of course, if you apply this as the 'stick' -- there needs to be a 'carrot' of improved benefits Gold vs. Platinum. :)

Well said Notzac

It might drive incremental sales but at the cost of giving away costly benefits for half the revenue. That kind of goes against the idea of getting people to spend more money with Qantas. If it is going to take someone 20 flights to get to a certain status level and you give it to them for 10 flights then you've lost money. Sure they might have been only going to do 8 flights and so they buy an extra 2 flights to make the "grade", but you've just given away 12 flights worth of benefits for the 2 flights.

If we look at anytime access as a benefit, that is being taken away and it seems likely for cost reasons. So if it is considered too costly how much of that is because for the last 2 years a heap of people have been able to get platinum for the half the cost.

Meanwhile, the value of status is being "devalued" for those who don't get the promo and do all the required flying. Now imagine the screams if Qantas devalued J by actually filling the seats with points upgrades for platinums.

BTW I'm very happy for those who did get the double SC promo - just saying is all.

To an extent medhead. I was happy to just sit on QF Gold and not go any further. Because of the promo, l did about 8 extra flights that l wasn't going to do in the first place to get to WP. Guess it goes both ways?

That something of a simplistic view of things, given the double promo was only on 10 weeks & the promo only applied to flights booked after it started on the 13th April, which would have meant a lot of last minute bookings that perhaps otherwise would not have occurred. It should also be noted that status bump incentives are not the sole domain of the last two years, these campaigns have been running as far back as 10 years ago.

The net result for me was it got me to Partner Gold, I would have made WP anyway, however had JASAs not come into being in terms of SCs etc, I would not have hit WP, simply because all my travel last year was domestic, therefore I could not take advantage of other high yielding opportunities such as YUPs and CX asian runs.

I would say that over time the increase in elite customers with QF will grow at a much faster rate with JASAs than any possible double or bonus SC promotion, as the high credit spend customers cotton on to its potential. We should have seen anytime access going a while back ( just like the baggage changes), the move to charge for the meeting rooms and excess baggage were clear red flags to the upcoming changes IMHO (in hindsight).

And how many flights have you done since that you may have chosen not to do but for the benefits of having WP status?

How many extra flights have I taken since becoming a WP that l might not have if l was still Gold? No extra flights. It was only in that Double SC period that l carried out the extra flights.
I was lucky with FIFO work related flights at that time too. Plus, as you stated, flights for the Double SC Promo had to be booked within that promo time frame. I think l had 2 or 3 flights booked before l got the promo where l didn't get the double SC's, even though l did travel in that period. That was very frustrating. Oh well, l got to WP in the end.

And how many flights have you done since that you may have chosen not to do but for the benefits of having WP status?

I agree 100% with this.

Since hitting WP (thanks a DONE4) I have already booked enough flying to already requalify for next year, and I have enough for the next year already in the pipeline to at least get SG (although I'm pretty sure I'll requalify WP again 3 years running).

I may very well have directed a lot of these flights elsewhere except for the fact that now that I am WP, I need to fly QF to enjoy those benefits.

So the benefits are not just a lazy cost-centre for QF, they are actually encouraging me to continue to spend more and more with QF to enjoy them.

And hence you are getting platinum benefits for 8 flights that would normally be provided for 16 similar flights. Qantas have got half the amount of revenue that they would have otherwise got to provide those benefits.

I could view that as a devaluing of the 47 flights it took me to get from Gold to Platinum.

I'm not sure what is simplistic about the view in light of the time frame. There are 3 people here, including yourself who have said that the promo helped them get benefits cheaper than it would have cost someone else not on the promo. Qantas is giving out benefits on the cheap. QED. That devalues the status for people not getting the promo. The time these types of promos have been running does change that situation.

It your example, you say that double SC got you to PG, but wouldn't have got you to WP. But isn't the jump from WP to PG the same as the jump from SG to WP?

As for encouraging people to buy more flights - well anytime access did that for me, yet some view me as a petulant child for highlighting the impact its' removal has for me.

As for JASA - I think they are surprisingly generous. I also wonder about the wisdom of widely pronouncing the situation in relation to the longevity of JASA earning. Not that I don't appreciate that doing so is extremely helpful. I guess it is a case of making hay while the sun shines.

For the record, I have also hit WP at full cost and also have SG booked for next year. And I already had my bookings made for the double promo period this year.

Eh, if there is a fair amount of empty seats (which is why you'd have the promo), its filling the seats, which in turn is giving QF revenue that they otherwise wouldn't have had. Not all of my flights in the double SC promo were JASA's. There were a few discount economy ones.

Except that Gold members have access to the Qantas Club lounge while Platinum members have access to the Business Class lounges (domestic) and First Class Lounges (international).
