Tokyo Haneda slot - 2025

Nothing has been announced looks like coming home via BNE the only day option, but adds the cost of a hotel at BNE as arrives too late to connect onto SYD; will need to be on 6am form BNE the following day to be at work by 9:30am.
It looks like the HND-BNE once launched will arrive in Brisbane 1645 local, so you should be able to connect?

ooops I had misread the previous post thought i arrived at 20:00 which would have only allowed 35 mins connection to the last BNE-SYD flight on a Sunday. 16:45 is as you say much more doable. Provided departs on time 3 hours should be enough to transfer and have a shower if book the last flight.
 
People are crazy, the new SYD overnight flights will get back into SYD too late to go to work on arrival day so defeats the purpose of the punishing overnight. Arriving into SYD early evening, was perfect, no need to sleep on plane and home well before bed time.

Im very saddened to hear the day flight is being canned as it is the only reason we were coming home via Japan.

Makes future Japan trips only an option if J CRs are available; as at least in J one can get some sleep, something that is impossible in whY.
Japanese, and other countries in Asia, tour companies traditionally have preferred overnight flights so the daylight hours on quite short stays are not used up travelling but touring.

Not for me, but my holidays tend to be a bit longer.

Perhaps but QFs main market would be Aussies, Id expect the Japanese locals more likely to fly ANA or JAL.

If one is going to arrive exhausted having been up for over 24 hours straight; then you end up dozing on on day one of that tour.

This interests me as i am flying on points Brisbane to Helsinki via NRT in August next year ( QF and Finnair).
If Qantas is going to base all its flights at HND , its going to mess up my connection as the only flights that I could get reward seats on Japan to HEL departed from NRT.
Hopefully , the flight changes will be announced soon so I can get QF hopefully make alternate arrangements.

Qantas have been given the Virgin slot so the change is only one additional flight to HND for them. I’d expect NRT flights to remain in terms of numbers, but change in some destinations, even maybe replace some of the JQ ones.

Daytime HND-SYD flights have been consistently empty

My flight at the end of August had 25 in Y, and talking to the crew they said this wasn’t unusual, Japan-Australia flight traffic prefers overnight flights apparently, I don’t.

You have to remember that all of the current flights atm have had a schedule change which meant free option for customers to move onto other flights, whether that being the evening departure flight or direct to BNE/MEL from NRT.

Part of the reason the daytime flight isnt liked as much on the HND leg (as opposed to SYD) is the departure times. You're forced to overnight at the airport. A lot of people prefer doing some last minute shopping then showing up at the airport in early evening.

There are very few people that like catching super early morning Int'l flights.

In their application for the slot, they outlined their proposed schedule which is HND for all 3 cities.

NRT is likely to be dropped especially with a330s starting to hit the shop for retrofitting this year. At least that's how i would see it. It would be quite strange to have 3 HND flights from 3 cities in Australia then an additional SYD - NRT on QF. It may be that they do a seasonal SYD - CTS again for next (25/26) JP snow season.
I wonder what the loads on NH889 are like. I've taken it once, but only in J so couldn't observe economy load.
From a price perspective, the NH morning flights from HND are generally cheaper than the overnight (similar to QF) so I would assume similarly, their evening flight is more popular.

I'll provide an example as to why its annoying for the daytime HND flight. Because of the overnight stay at airport requirement, I basically have to check out, head to the airport a day early and do everything as I would for the evening departure flight, but instead of getting on a plane, I head over to the hotel and set a 4-5am alarm clock.

Honestly if SYD didn't have a curfew, I bet the preference would be for a midnight SYD departure so they can do a 9-10am HND departure instead.
 
When i originally booked it was an 8:05 departure, arriving 18:45 into SYD. So a 10am timeslot (which would not require an over night at the airport) would have been perfect arriving in SYD at 20:45.

QF won’t drop NRT, it’s too much of a hub for their codeshares with JQ which is why they are bringing back a SYD NRT service.

LOL, we didn’t have to stay at the airport for our recent trip, we left our hotel at 6, were in the lounge playing with the beer robot by 7. Given we were on a week long trip we kept our bodies on Syd time which was 8 when we left the hotel so no biggie. HND was a breeze at that time of the morning in all aspects.

Well they were doing 8am departures for a while, so they must have been able to. It was the moving the departure earlier that made the day flight more of a struggle for some.

See Qantas approved to take over Virgin’s Tokyo capacity , Sydney flight switching to NRT, which it has to given two new HND flights and one new slot
Qantas has not said one way or another on this matter. ET put it in their article as well but technically this is speculation unless someone has a source leak from Qantas. (And none of the articles mention talking to Qantas about it).

There's arguments both for and against that both make sense and just need to wait to see what QF decides to so.

When QF had 747s on SYD-TYO, there would almost always be Japanese school groups on the flight. Often such groups would trigger an op up.

The only official announcements about the Tokyo route has been that VA is pulling out and IASC has reassigned that slot to QF.
QF has not yet said anything about gaining the slot and the only information we have about the airlines plans are what they submitted to IASC when they applied for the slot.

Until such time as QF says something about their Japan flights, any talk about a shift of one current SYD-HND flight to NRT is speculation.
There is no longer a rule requiring that airlines operating long haul to HND maintain service to NRT, as their was when QF first took up the HND night slot.

They need to reduce A330 flying (somewhere) to allow the planned cabin upgrade. They could also resume service to KIX or CTS. There is nothing saying they need (or want) to maintain a 4th daily AU-TYO flight once the MEL and BNE flights shift to HND.
