Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

Given that amount of dollars spent to earn 1 airline dollar, that would mean the sellers buying points will now be worth half of what their market rate.

Maybe it will become uneconomical for people to sell points and thus the illegal process will stop

VFF and QFF I believe have been active at this recently

I too rang Amex this arvo to query my situation. After my ramblings about my years of being a member, my annual spend etc the (Australian) support agent stopped me to confirm I was "part of the very small select few to have their balances credited with the same number of rewards points on 15 Apr". I have not received any letter to date confirming this, nor did he say I would receive one (I asked for written confirmation). I have both the Explorer and Edge cards and put through around $150k per year combined on both cards.

Thanks for the heads up. Where did this info come from? Only use it for Supermarket spend which will reduce from 2.25 points per $ to 1.5 points per $. Don't know if the extra .25 points will be worth it over the Amex Ultimate card any more. Luckily the yearly fee is still low for DJs Amex at $99.

According to Amex this morning in relation to halving of redemption rates for points transferred from DJs Amex to Velocity (from April). The response was:

"If you are transferring your points from Platinum Edge to Velocity then there is an impact. If you are transferring your points from DJ to Velocity then there will be no impact "

Note she also clarified there will be no impact to earn rates.....

Would help if we had a consistent response.

Talked to an online chat agent yesterday and I was told that there would be no change to earn or transfer rates.

That's what

I was told the same. Not being a DJs Amex holder I can understand they may maintain the same earn rates but not sure how they can have different redemption rates rates across different products unless DJs has different MR program that can convert directly to Velocity for example....

There are no changes change coming through for earn rates on the DJs card, or for transfers to Velocity.
The previous poster only mentioned Qantas and Giftcards.

ive been having a think recent;y and reassesng my options,
here is my take,

I have a 1ppd Visa card however thats linked to QFF

Essentially, using the Edge/Exp Combo, ill get 2ppd/3ppd for general/supermarket spend, which becomes 1/1.5 ppd for my favourite kris program

Qff for me is too high points requirements plus huge taxes for my long haul premium flights,

Kris has lower points requirements/far lower taxes,

so it might be just a case of sucking up the changes and keeping the two amexs and offsettign the annual fees with the travel credit and retention bonus if possible

id like to stick it to amex and prove a point but then it might be shooting myself in the foot

What’s the advantage to keeping the Explorer though?

I agree with you, which is why I gave up on Qantas long time ago, and the points are just sitting idle, because I could hardy find a seat on QF whereas it is much easier to find a seat on SQ.

id say the only thing is that I can earn 1ppd on Kris flyer, and there are only a few kris earning cards, and there are no 1ppd (happy to be proven wrong)

so for me, since if ive alerady kept the edge, im ineligibile for any amex sign up bonuses so I might as well keep this one,

and there are only a few kris earning cards

Is there a list of these in one place on AFF?

I’m thinking I will get one or two of them and gain their bonus - and even if they earn only .75 Kris flyer points use them, and wait out the 18 months for an Amex signup bonus. On my lowly Amex spend of 25 to 30k signups will be the most lucrative. (Statement credits will be missed though)

DJs does have a different rewards program, called "DJ Amex Membership Rewards". And it is not interchangeable with Gateway, Ascent or Ascent Premium.

DJs is simply 2 points to 1 KF point
1.5 KF at Woolies etc
1 .0 at Servos
1 0 KF st DJs

And 2.0KF at DJs for the Platinum card only.

So, fairly aligned to the Platinum Edge (post devaluation in April)...with the exception of extra points earn at DJs...and perhaps lower annual fee of $99 (unless DJ Platinum is selected, which earns extra at DJs and has higher annual fee $295?)

Noting that the Platinum Edge also provides $200 travel credit.

Yes, the Platinum does not seem worth the extra AF unless you are heavy DJs spender.

The $99 AF would be easy to offset with Statement Credits, so the lack of a travel credit is of no consequence to me.
