Rex BidUp Success and Failures

Got a 'you've been outbid' email from Rex this morning.

Am flying MEL-SYD on Thursday and have bid $50 so just above the minimum. I'm not desperate for an upgrade to J as it's a $99 fare and I'm booked into seat 3A for a further $15. Seat map is showing 5 J seats free (not the most reliable indicator of course).

I reckon 50% of the times I got those emails I still got the upgrade, so you are not necessarily out of the running.

The lounge was near capacity.

Look I am a fan of Rex – but in fairness that does not necessarily mean there were a lot of people inside!

Yes "outbid" can just mean only 1 higher bid for 1 of the 5 seats

Sadly, no dice on my $50 MEL-SYD bid. Loads were pretty solid on my flight with the footy and a long weekend looming.

9:32am - 24 hours out from flight - Email saying I had been outbid
9:32am - 24 hours out from flight - Second email less than 20 seconds after the last one saying my bid was successful!

Confusing experience but will see how it goes today.

Yeah, that’s normal.

There is more than one seat available for upgrade. So while you may have been outbid, there were still seats left, which means they go to the next bid, and so on.

MEL-SYD $55 minimum bid accepted on the weekend, 24hrs out from flight.

Inaugural PER-MEL tonight, with the number of bidders and maximum bid jumping around (up and down somehow), my bid was eventually accepted at T-2:45 for $147.

MEL-PER, 14 Bidders and maximum bid of $206 with 5 seats for upgrades.

Cleared T-3 hours prior @ $146.

Since when is the number of bidders visible?

Also wondering how number of bidders goes down? Can one cancel their bid once initially unsuccessful?

I do wonder if they “sell” some seats early or if the numbers are fudged - or if the system is just buggy.

Bids can be freely rescinded or raised at any time. Also, I believe they don’t make all seats available for upgrade initially, but I suspect they manually review and add leftover unsold inventory at close of bidding, which would explain why some people here report being told by the system that they’re no longer in the running to be successful, but end up receiving an upgrade anyway.

Until recently, and this may have now changed… I thought the latter was that Rex advises you if you are outbid, but being ‘outbid’ doesn’t necessarily mean a lower bid won’t be successful.

For example, person A may bid $50. Person B comes along and bids $55, triggering a message to person A that they have been outbid.

However if there are two seats available, it is irrelevant that person A has been outbid!

Unless the messaging has now changed that it says you are no longer in the running?

This is a very popular flight, and other passengers have made higher offers. You are currently not in the running to be successful in your bid.

If you go onto the page and step up your bid a dollar at a time, if I recall correctly the message actually changes when you are "in the running" again.

If bidders can rescind, maybe its a case of others rescinding put you back in the running!
