Rex in voluntary administration, ending all 737 services

Rex will claim that the parts fell off one of their aircraft that happened to be flying in the vicinity. Like a propeller or something.

The day VA went 2.0 was the day the briefing based investment was on tender hooks.

The problem is many of those regional centres can't profitably run with larger aircraft than the Saabs. Putting Dash 8s on a lot of the routes would mean poor loads and reduced frequency.
Which is exactly what has happened to Albury-Melbourne. On weekdays, Rex used to run 3 return services. I used them a lot, and they generally had reasonable loads. QF came in, and Rex pulled out entirely. QF runs one flight from Albury to Melbourne very early in the morning, and it comes back in the evening. Completely useless for most of us, and especially so for the specialists who used to come to Albury for the day. Even the train is a better alternative.
 
Those Project Mother slides are laughable.

It’s just all about doing everything ‘on the cheap’. It also makes the point that Rex is the kingmaker in many aspects. The way it’s all worded is really militant like.

Where to start... If I were the investor I'd be pissed off given how much wasn't thought through:

Strategy : Launch a domestic-only LCC++ hybrid airline to serve major trunk connections across AustraliaThe problem is they didn't launch a LCC++ hybrid carrier, they've got business class/lounges/free snacks/baggage etc it's more than a full service carrier in most places but they're having to sell at LCC prices.
Strategy : Offer competitive rates with Jetstar and 5-10% cheaper than QantasVery few routes they're actually competing with Jetstar, instead it's against Virgin and VA have been really good at responding by matching the ZL fare at the same departure time as VA.
Strategy : Start with 5 busiest routes ex Sydney to ensure quick profitabilityThey've actually never achieved this goal, the 5 busiest routes from SYD are MEL, BNE, OOL, ADL and PER. PER is still missing.
Strategy: Single fleet type using 737-800 with distressed lease ratesThis is something that's come out a lot in the media today, sure they started with "distressed lease rates" but that's apparently all dried up and now they're apparently paying the same market rate as everyone else.
Strategy : Leverage on Rex's extensive network, infrastructure, management and systems to ensure low additional overheadsThis is actually the most puzzling one, if you look at many major airports that ZL operate to they had to buy shiny new 737 capable equipment, the website had to undergo and upgrade and under the hood there were upgrades to sabre to get the booking system in a state capable of competing.

Now the next part about ZL buying VA out of administration is classic, it's almost as if they thought no one else was interested but them. It's also full circle brilliant that they shat on Deloitte say they weren't fixing VA:
"However, the path the Deloitte administrator is taking seems to indicate that it has no interest in tackling the chronic problems and is rather targeting a quick sale with no redundancies."
Then Rex claimed VA had a "bloated management" (um hello Rex board overthrows), bad cost culture (I wonder if VA were losing $140k per day) and inefficient operations (I'll give them that on this last one). Finally they claimed that an experienced buyer could resolve the issues in 3 years but not fix all the above (although ironically it seems like Bain have).

Today's AM on the ABC reported that Qantas had put on extra capacity (capacity dumping?) on the city routes that REX entered most recently. I wonder if the ACCC might look at that?
Here’s the thing though, proving it’ll be almost impossible and recently a lot of their golden triangle routes have been full. I’ve even been on a rare A330 from BNE to SYD that was 100% full.

Sure - that would be the intent of the airline putting additional capacity - to take passengers away from the weaker competitor. Competitor gives up/goes broke.

I think the ACCC has the ability to demand internal documents from a business - that's what happened in the 'ghost flights' case. So the timing of internal documentation to put the extra capacity on (still relying on the ABC's reporting) would be interesting. One would assume they are smart enough not to explicitly reference REX, if there is a link.

Jeez people complain prices are too high because airlines are restricting capacity to drive up demand and fares and when airlines add capacity because flights are full day after day and people are also B...ing they can't get an award seat it is unfair competition.

How about REX actually advertise and make their seats available to the public eye via all the normal search engines before there are complaints other airlines are providing too many seats.

I have mentioned REX to several major city based friends and they had either no idea who REX was or no idea REX flew the golden triangle (just country routes).
