Rockfords discussion

I'm taking some people there on the first weekend in December.
By the way, did I read somewhere that you're taking 8 to a future Stonewall lunch? Is this because you're an original member/a case of two tiers of membership, or is another Stonewaller providing the other half of the guest spots? /jealous!

Eeek, I might be in trouble now - got a letter from Rockford this morning saying I'm on the mailing list and I have a membership code, plus giving me another order form
i have known them for more than 20 yrs and also been there and they have great wine collection and i often order from them and their black Shiraz is a world class great addition to any nice occasion or give as a gift.. they also have soft Alicante Bouchet which is great with everyday meal..

TWF absolutely slammed the 17 Dry Country Grenache – gave it 85 points. This was their review:

“A whole lot of mint and flyspray character, nutty, red fruits, and sappy things. It’s distinctly nutty and walnutty, very minty, squishy red fruits, not much in the way of tannin or structure, diffuse and quite warm in alcohol, with a jelly flavour and a very drying finish. Baked. Not very good.”

Apparently HH had given it 95 points – that is worlds apart from TWF. I personally haven’t tried it, as I’m still a budburst member.

So it's nutty AND walnutty? But very minty too? Maybe it was mentholated fly spray? And the red fruits have been squished ( perhaps in the grape press???).

What a bunch of pretentious tosh.

I have tried it 3-4 times over ~12 months, IMO it’s not as good as the ‘15 or ‘16 - 90-91 for me but 85 is harsh. They can only rate the wine in front of them but seems like a dud bottle. Don’t get their need to rubbish HH

I also really disliked the way they were rubbishing HH in that review, I think it was GW who was also doing the same to Haliday recently by virtue of him being in his eighties which pissed me off

So I went to Rockford on Saturday for a "mini tasting" so got to taste the 19 Basket Press again.
Unlike my experience in October, I actually enjoyed the BP on this occasion.
At first the wine was soft and delicate on the palate. The back palate however revealed a bold and earthy Shiraz, typical of the Barossa. One of my guests described it as strong.
When I asked if there would be any available for public release, I was told maybe.
Another piece of information I gleaned was that if you have any 96 or 97 BP, drink it now. I was also reminded of the drink within 10 years rule, based on not knowing how everyone stores their wine.
Edit to add:
The Dry Country Grenache ($50) is bang on. Worth getting if you enjoy this variety IMHO.

Are they still on the ‘17 Dry Country?
