Rockfords discussion

Hey all,

I didn't realise there was a dedicated thread to Basket Press.

Do you think it's ok to pay $100? Found some locally.

I contacted Rockford, lady mentioned there's no minimum purchase in order to gain membership.
Cellardoor list says $75, I assume members only and when allocated.
What else is recommended? I'm not a bit drinker, prefer to just buy premium wines for now, so only ordering for access to Basket Press down the line.

Thanks 👍
Not actually dedicated to Basket Press - it’s a thread for discussion about all Rockford wines.

buy one @$100, try it to see if you like it - some love it some don’t, some think the $75 CD price is a fair price, some don’t. If you like it sign up as a bud burst member buying a few of their other wines each year and in 12-24 months you should be able to access the BP and BS via mail order.

What would you recommend from their range?

Thanks for the response, I think a 2017 may be too early to open tho?

Due to COVID I didn’t make it to Rockford last year so haven’t tasted the 17 BP yet - but while yes they are young, and I prefer most wines with a bit of age, so far I have always liked them on release. If ‘17 is what you can get give it a go - if you don’t like it now, you probably won’t in a decade....

I have had the current Rifle Range (‘17 Cabernet) from a couple of haft bottles- it is immensely drinkable, I can recommend it.

I like pretty well all of the range, what varieties do you like to drink?

Honestly I'm not a big drinker, I drink with my brother and he collects wine.

I like Pinots, Merlots and Cab Savs. I was going to enroll into a wine course to learn more in-depth about grape varieties.

You don't have Shiraz on your list of likes - what is the interest in the Basket Press?

I wouldn't be dropping $100 on a bottle of Shiraz when Shiraz isn't on my "I like" list

I just find recently with heavier wines, they affect my Asthma.

Hence, I want to be selective and buy more top end wines for the special occasions.

Unfortunately, if I pull a Coonawarra JR most my friends wouldn't even know it's more expensive than a Basket Press. It's always nice to have some name value to some wine, and it makes great gifts.

It's not just about drinking it myself, but sharing.

If I was drinking more often, I'd probably sway towards a Pinot.

Why does it matter if your friends know how expensive a wine is? Not sure if I would want to drink with friends who scrutinise based on the "name value" of a wine, so probably a good thing they don't know - gives you an opportunity to introduce new wines to them.

I do that, but I want some name value wines in my collection/big occasions. Unfortunately most my friends would never spend $50 on wine, let alone $100+

I do buy quite a bit of stuff none of my friends would know which costs more than the Basket Press already.

I spoke to my brother and he said he can get me instant membership, so I don't need to do the process anymore.

Thanks for the recommendations tho.

I'm not sure how you can get instant membership to a 'club' that values persistent loyalty over time... they're not a large producer dishing out memberships to everyone that comes along, it takes time to earn the right to purchase their better wines.

I'd also suggest they're not really interested in members who are only buying their flagship wine.

Why? As long as you're buying I'm sure their happy.

My family owned restaurants in SA for 20 years.

It's who you know, not what you know. That basically goes for all things in life. I don't really see this as anything magical? Anyone can buy a few bottles of their standard range and get membership to buy Basket Press.

The 43 pages of this thread would beg to differ... but I'm not here to start fights. If you can get Basket Press from day 1, despite not liking the grape, good for you. I'm not sure you're going to make a lot of friends in this thread bragging about your instant access though... reminds me of the member a few years ago who gloated about his CL access!

Is it sacrilege to say on this thread that I prefer Rifle Range to BP? BP seems to take on quite a feral bent with time in bottle...

Absolutely wasn't bragging, mistaken excitement?

I was prepared to purchase normally, I'm not getting any discount. I'm simply skipping a waitlist. I don't see the big deal, it's 1 winery.

It's available locally for $100, originally why I commented here. I'm saving $25, and a wait time.

:)

actually, when it comes to wine appreciation, it doesn't matter who you know - it's all about what you know that's in the glass :)

it's a shame that you edited this comment and removed the part about being happy to share deals and wanting to learn, which follows your somewhat conflicting posts elsewhere :(

Why was it conflicting? I am confused, I only edited because I didn't want to continue on this trend off course from the topic.

I’ve been waiting 3 years @Mynameislucluc for upgrade from bud burst membership. It’s not just the access to BP or BS that’s the big deal, but it’s the little things like seperate tasting room When visiting the cellar door, and the private degustation lunches with matching museum Rockford wines that is exclusive to stonewallers.
I look forward to the day I move to up the memebership line, in the meantime I’ll keep buying the RR and their Riesling 😊

I believe you are just stirring here, although that’s usually accompanied by a 😉 or similar. So I’ll take you at face value for now.

A number of your statements, including that last one are just plain wrong.

The first one in the quote is pretty appalling . I’ll let Todd know to keep an eye out.

I made a flurry of wine orders the other night, including popping on to the Rockford site. Being the weekend of daylight saving ending in the states that observe it (despite it also being Easter), I had a few wistful moments thinking I really should be waking up in Radelaide and heading out with @Buzzard Ruby and Co for a day of fun in the Barossa.

i ordered a few bottles from Rockford (am Bud Burst member). On logging out, I saw that select Bud Burst members may be able to order up to 3 bottles of BP. I quickly shot off an email to ask if I might be one of those members. Yesterday, I got two reaponses back from Rockford and Inwas able to add 3 BP and 3 Sparkling Shoraz to my order. 😍

almost as good as a Buzz tour.
