Saving a few dollars getting to Syd airport...

Were you already at weekly cap?

Quite possibly. If the week runs from Monday to Sunday then I did more than 8 trips through the week, and I bought a paper ticket on Friday for the Macquarie Park to Domestic trip.

I also went grocery shopping at Chatswood after getting to Artarmon and wasn't charged for either journeys.

You could have waited for a 400 bus which trundles down ORiordan (for an extra $2 or so)

I think all of CityRail barriers do this. Always thought it was wierd as well given the ticket firmly states it is your Tax Invoice.

If you go through the wider barrier it gives you back your ticket.

What is this free 60 minute transfer?

General all non-airport line gates keep the ticket when it's used. If you need the tax invoice you just ask someone to let your through and explain the reason. Airport line stations do not suck in the ticket. They are an anomaly. Also extremely frustrating to get numpties who don't take their ticket when getting off at the airport.

My International - Kings Cross tonight cost $15.47 (12.60 + 2.87) for an off-peak trip. Think peak would be $16.70 (in the 10-20km zone)
Still a decent saving on the $17.20 paper fare

Except at the airport stations. you get a 60 minute window when you tap off somewhere. Say you go from Central to Burwood & tap off there. If you tap on again at Burwood within 60 minutes of tapping off there & then go to Parramatta, you get charged one fare (Central - Parramatta) with Opal. With a paper ticket, you'd get charged Central - Burwood & then Burwood - Parramatta.

So that screws the saving for separate trips anywhere to mascot, mascot to domestic. Better off walking than waiting 60 minutes to tap on again.

Taking the family away this weekend and found Pronto Valet Parking opposite the Virgin terminal dropped their rates this weekend from $248 to $109 which covers us from early Friday morning to Monday afternoon. No discounts were available on Virgin Valet.

Is this a mistake??

North Sydney to Domestic 1 Off-peak $5.00 $0.56 -$4.44

Mascot to North Sydney 1 Off-peak $4.10 $1.23 -$2.87

Its certainly a weird fare, and a weirder discount (off-peak discount should be 30%).
Assume the 1 relates to Journey 1 so you weren't near the cap

But its what I would expect if ticket was $1.90 and gate fee $3.10 ( apart from a missing cent) but those prices are way too low

What tool are you using to find these prices?

Here are the details I'm getting from the Sydney Trains Fare Calculator:

Of course, for Opal, you have to add the Airport Station Access fee, which is $12.60 for Adults and $10.60 for child/youth.

The current role out of Opal and removal of some paper tickets from 1 September 2014 is causing some concern for Airport workers, as the current weekly cap on Gate Access fee will not be accessible without the Adult Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly MyTrain paper ticket. https://www.opal.com.au/en/news/opalnews/news_article1_1jun2014.html

Interesting read from NSW Parliament (February 2014) here: https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&...=NELztmbzNVvY_pdPj2o2Tg&bvm=bv.68911936,d.dGI

Recommendation 9 specifically states that Opal shouldn't be implemented on the Airport Line until the Opal Card can provide for station usage fee exemptions and/or discounts (especially for Airport staff).

Only just discovered this - will be handy now that I will be taking the train from regional NSW to SYD a bit more often now.
Does the 400 bus from Mascot station stop pretty close to both domestic and international airports?
Will be getting an opal card too.. how would the fare for the total journey with two trips (train then bus) be calculated - can't see any calculator for combining two modes of transport..?

Edit: whoops, Opal isn't available on the 400 bus yet:
[h=3]Buses[/h] A Customer Trial on Sydney bus services is continuing to roll out progressively.

Opal enabled bus routes operating in the Mount Kuring-gai, Waverley and Forest Coach Lines bus networks.

400 bus stop is outside the Qantas terminal on the inner ring road for Domestic, and on the bottom level at the start of the terminal for International. Both pretty convenient and covered.

The walk from Mascot to the nearest stop is about 200m but uncovered. Rockdale station (better than Banksia due to more trains) to the stop is just across the road

The fare for the entire journey would be calculated separately (i.e. one fare for the train and one fare for the bus). This is one short coming of the Opal card as it discourages people switching between different modes of transport.

Awesome, thanks. Looks like the train price to Mascot or Rockdale is the same (from central or further north) and the bus ticket from either Mascot or Rockdale to international or domestic will be the same price too?
