Saving a few dollars getting to Syd airport...

My NSW Senior's card allows me to travel from Lake Macquarie to the airport via bus/train/train/bus with changes at Fassifern/Central/Mascot for $2.50. I understand that a Senior's card or Pensioner Concession card from any state or territory can be used the same way ( Pensioner Excursion Ticket - tickets | transportnsw.info ).

There are restrictions in place for senior pension cards that are for non NSW residents:

Not all concession fares and entitlements are available to non-NSW cardholders.New Zealand SuperGold Card,
National Seniors Card, Queensland Seniors Business Discount Card & Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card are not accepted.

Apprentice, Ausstudy and Tertiary pension or health care cards are not accepted unless you are a NSW resident and you have a specific NSW card issued from Centrelink.

You need to have a NSW one from Centrelink to claim a concession on public transport.

Did not know they. They still accepted it and ticket inspectors cited it with no issues. How odd.

I do think its silly to have a national pensioner system that doesn't let you travel effectively. If you meet the national requirements in one state, then you also meet them in another. Crazy!

Anyway, off topic sorry.

Not really off topic if the info helps some folk get to the airport with even less expenditure.

There is a brochure available ( http://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/b2b/concessions/2013-concession-brochure.pdf ) which has images of the cards accepted. Note that there are some cards around which claim to be Seniors Cards but are only merchandise discount cards and these are not accepted for concession travel.

OT. I have used my NSW Seniors Card in other states and territories. The changes to allow this have only happened over the last few years.

Did a stop-off at my way to Mascot last w/end.

City - Mascot $3.80
Mascot - Airport $8.80 from ticket machine
Not as good as the 400 bus but often works better for connections (Max 15min wait)

As mentioned above Opal becomes active at Airport stations from 28 March.
No info is on the Opal website about what the fees will be, but I think expecting a $12.60 gate pass is likely.

How they will handle the
- Airport to Airport (about $5)
- Airport to Green Sq/Mascot - $8.80
- Airport Weeklies (about $21 more than a say Mascot/ Green Sq weekly)
Is an unknown.

With Opal launching tomorrow at the airport stations and no specific information indicating any exemptions or additional fees relating to the airport stations , Im going to assume at this stage that the Daily travel cap of $15 , will include the airport stations , Mon to Sat . if this is the case , then the Sunday Travel cap of $2.50 will apply ...or will it ??? . You would think that this would have been covered off in any FAQ's .

After my last post , i decided to make a few calls ..firstly to Opal , then to Transport NSW , then to Airport link ......outcome.... Opal referred me to Transport NSW , Transport NSW referred me to Airport Link & then Airport Link back to Opal ....hilarious !

They all said that pricing had yet to be determined for the airport stations . I mentioned to them all that this kicks off in less then 24 hours and you don't know pricing .... I could just feel the " oh well" , shrug of the shoulders and blame game happening . So i guess we are still in the dark

Yes Minister

It might actually be worthwhile not alerting people to this problem. Judging by the quality of it contractors to the NSW government in other areas we might just get standard rail pricing.

From the T&Cs...

"The travelling group must be related by family and include at least one adult and one child aged up to 15 years (or 16-18 with a current NSW Senior Secondary Student Transport Concession card)"

Family only.

How discriminatory against single travellers... Anyway how would Opal recognise a travelling group? I suppose this is the same as what gwilli1 was asking.
