Scams like these

Clearly you've replied to a post that wasn't about an email. Apple may be a scam, but it's not a scam to phish for your iTunes account password.

As someone who has described how I set my passwords. Please do tell me even one of my passwords. Big hint, to make it easy, you need to know the number plate on the car I owed 24 years ago.

Medhead as I mentioned hacking/ID theft etc are huge businesses. There are three separate ways for crooks to get your registration history if they've got an idea of who you are. I have been dealing with this issue for just over 20 years and the flaws in the 'system' for Govt held information are real, huge and used everyday for elicit purposes.

To do so is illegal but that is not much of a deterrent.

A statistic for you from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics - as of 2002 - for every ten dwellings in NSW there is one person who has served a custodial sentence. I queried the Director, Don Weatherburn about it as I immediately wondered if say someone was jailed 9 times (for example: a 36 year old not-so-professional B&E 'specialist who started as a 13yr old) if that meant that covered 90 dwellings (divided total number of custodial sentences served into total dwellings).

No was the answer - it was calculated on current living people who had served one or more custodial sentences.

Of course it is an average across all NSW. So in some areas it might be half the average and in others twice etc. What is interesting, at least to me, was that it means in a typical neighbourhood (a 250m circle) there are on average 40 fully reformed souls who served time in jail.

Given how often we see people convicted with a suspended sentence or given community service - it was of interest

thats a really good idea!

I also add extra things to that base. It is easy to remember and prevents basic dictionary attacks. The information is hard to hack as they'd need to know the state of registration. I can also randomly capitalise letters in the base rego. With the latest round of new registrations and even with personalised number plates the format is variable.

And it was legit?

I think so, it was all via iTunes that I acted. Cleanly went to their websites and that sort of thing. Called apple who advised the security requirement had been increased. Nothing has been stolen in the following couple of years.

Edit: just a little comment on the potential for hacking my password. I trust the people on here who know my real name won't try to hack my password. Other non AFF people who know me are not privy to the information about my password base so they would be taking a massive leap to decide to hack vehicle registration records in multiple states in order to hack my password.

And I wasn't responding to an email....

Yes your post did make that very clear however you did not say how you may have been hacked and followed the previous post about the fake email.

So I was covering two bases (poorly, I'll go stand in the corner now).

If the explanation about how the celebrity photos got accessed (people using past info/maiden names/cars owned etc) from iCloud were true then....

Ok. :p. I didn't say I'd been hacked by my actions but was wondering if the request from the App Store after they closed my account meant that someone else had hacked into my account. Just like the celebrities. :p

I put a lounge for sale on gumtree. Got an enquiry, so I replied with details and this is the correspondence I got

quick google revealed the true intent of the would be purchaser..
What can they do with your bank account details without password and sms control?

Please don't tell me you can buy things using someone else's bank account without any proof of authority on the account?

I know it sounds naive but I don't use my bank accounts for purchases. Can't transfer money out of them without password so I am stumped how people can scam.

JohnK - I suspect that what somebol was referring to in their post was an attempt at what they call "the courier agent/shipping scam", where they don't want your details, they want you to pay their courier/shipper by Western Union or Paypal. Explained better here:

They are fraudulent, but just to clarify to avoid unnecessarily alarming those who may have mistakenly responded to one of these: The scammers behind these particular ads are not identity thieves. They don't even want what you are selling. They are after quick cash, nothing more. If you have responded to an email like this with nothing more than your basic name and paypal email address or your bank branch and account number, you do not need to be overly worried.

What the scammer intends to do in this scenario is to send a fake Paypal email, claiming that you have been paid for the item PLUS shipping. The email will indicate that the funds are on hold until you pay the "shipper" (who is supposedly going to come pick up the item.) The "shipper" usually requires payment by western Union or Moneygram. The email will claim that once you have paid this money, your payment will be released to you.

In reality, no money has been sent, and the "shipper" is fake. Any money you send for "shipping" will be passed on to the scammer, who will walk away to the cash and disappear. Nobody will ever show up to pick up the item, because the scammer wanted the cash, not the item.

Thanks.

Unbelievable the things that people will do to scam $10/$15/$20 here and there. Unbelievable.

Googled Royal Standard Cargo Services as i thought the job might be interesting but the search returned zilch on the company:(

When the name has anything royal, supreme, platinum etc and you do not recognise the brand instantly - don't waste your time. Also a fake web site and google references can seem very realistic for some of the more sophisticated scams.

E-mailed to one of my disposable addresses but not one I use for paypal. Suggest you don't click on the link ;) (which may have copied). There was also a "Remove Limitation" button at the bottom below the text.

Just received a phone call from a lovely "Telstra" employee, with a thick Indian accent and a noticeable time delay on the line, who assured me she was calling from Miller Street, Sydney. Apparently, I am receiving all kinds of viruses on my computer and she wanted to help me.

I stated that all was ok with my computer and that she was mistaken. She disagreed with me and advised that my Telstra internet service was now going to be terminated.

I guess this post will not be read by anyone....

Some less than scrupulous people also say to the "Telstra" employee;

"Oh, I'm so glad you called because my friend is in even worse trouble with viruses on his computer. Can you please call xx_X on xcccvyyhuu."

The phone number given is either the Aust Fed Police or Local State police area command.

I received a phonecall yesterday which I believe was a scam call. The call came in on my landline and I could tell straight away that it was from some sort of call center based on the way the call came through. The caller had a foreign accent and was hard to understand but eventually he claimed he was from the National Australia Bank security section and wanted to know whether I had authorised a $700 transaction to New Zealand. I laughed at him and said I didn't have a NAB account then hung up.

I figure it was an attempt to gain bank account information and passwords etc. I guess they were hoping that some of the random callers they got had NAB accounts and might think it was a legitimate call.

I've had heaps of fake Telstra calls and the fake Microsoft, "there's something wrong with your computer" calls but this is the first time I've had a fake bank call.
