Scams like these

Mrsdrron has been getting emails from Commbank saying she must reconfirm her deatails due to changes in the money laundering laws.
Problem is I am the primary cardholder and have had no such request so strongly suspecting a scam. email address looks genuine but ends with /KYC.

MrsTMA is getting SMSs and phone calls on her phone for a $511 bill from QML pathology, quoting her full name (Including middle name)

Interesting thing is that her phone or email address is never used for medical or pathology! We put everything to my phone.

Amusing that they followed the SMSs with a phone call and left a message on the answering service. Very keen.

i wonder if this is the result of Optus, Latitude or Medicare hackers.

The only time I’ve had a scam email with full, correct name was after the Optus hack.

If my phone can detect and notify me many scams then why aren't the telcos, with the technology at hand, shutting down these messages?
Very most likely they make money from the pings, ie, mobile phone traffic.
I mean, we, you and I have to pay mobile phone companies a lot of money, both post paid and pre paid, they (mobile phone companies) like to see themselves as separate, but its more or less only 3 mobile phone companies that have towers, like Telstra, Optus and Voda.
And the rest buy time, and these 3 above sell it.
And can sell their time or bandwith, or lease it out, and are paid every ping (call, sms, mms, etc) we make.
Like for eg, they can also use tech to stop spoofing, but they won't, ACCC also won't do anything.
Only thing we consumers can do, is just to block and delete, ad neseum, on and on and on.

Edit:
If you do want to play along, get the wife to speak to the "QML" phone operator: even though we are told not to talk with the scammers, but they already have her name and other details.
You could give a false address, they might know her real address, but who knows what info they have, and where they got it from.

Maybe be daring enough to chat and find out what their bsb for payment by bank transfer/osko is, or website to pay by card.
Could turn out to be like that tradie in Vic that took money, and then disappeared.

Mrs WF got a text from a new mobile. Apparently son has lost his old phone.
Toilets seem to be guilty when people are wandering

PS He is at work

For Wandering_fred, Its probably a scam, but the only way, I can think of to avert this, apart from riling the scammer, or to make them more amenable, is to use code words for only those words used in the family.
They say not to connect with the scammer, ie, "(by replying: but I don't have a son/I only have a daughter/I only have got 2 cats, but no sons/daughters/no kids)".
Or being inept enough to phone back a "linkt" employee/"agent" ie the one that contacted you your (toll has not "worked"), to use their grammar.

Got an SMS couple of weeks ago, “your tax dept of $somenumber is still owing”, claiming to be from the ATO, of course with a link in the text.
Heh, good try scammers.
Thursday I got an email saying I had a message in MyGov. Logged in … message was a legit one about how I still owed $somenumber … I guess there’re Libertarians/MadMax’ers who’ll claim it’s a legit scam?

Had a couple of these over the weekend. Annoying they can't shut it down.
I am sure the real linkt can’t get it shut down they must get some real nasty messages.

Every message sent should be tracked back to a sender, it would completely stop these stupid messages.

Has no effect when the origin isn’t in Straya, ‘cos places like India have bigger problems than people in Straya getting scam SMS’s.

NAB have instituted a service where you can forward all suspect SMSs about NAB to a mobile account in their security department. They then SMS you back with a thankyou from a different number and advise they will check it out.
