From what I can see the email does not address you by name; eg Dear David.This went to my spam folder and I thought it looked very much like apple but now I'm thinking it is spam

I would therefore err on the side of caution and delete it.
Even if you did consider it legitimate, the golden rule is NEVER use hyperlinks in emails to access your account information.
Access your Apple account from the Settings Menu of your device.
