Scams like these

Well I got an email from the ATO yesterday. Seems they think there is something shifty with Mygov.
But the email was from a gmail account and the heading was "Dear user your refund has been approved.

So I have not lodged my tax return yet. Didn't pay any tax so not expecting a refund. And since when has the Tax Dept been calling us dear user.

I booked a restaurant for a group last week using seven rooms. I've received two emails from them - one thanking me for coming and one asking for a review. Neither of them have an option to opt out or unsubscribe - is anyone aware if this is a requirement
If you dont plan to use them again, esp with emails, block and usually in email, that works.
SMS is a bit more problematic with some phones, as though the phone wont ring from that number, it will still show up as in blocked calls, so it would take a few secs from your life to delete the #.
At least that is what happens with my Samsung phone.
Have least 50 phone #s blocked now.

Dear Sir,

I am Mr. Seb Schulte, Legal practitioner, a Legal counsel and private attorney which is located in England. I am contacting you in regards to a deceased client who died in England in March 2012; he was a prominent client of mine who happens to share the same SURNAME with you.
Before his death, my client deposited (12.7M USD) in a financial institution here in England, documentations regarding these transactions indicate that claims can only be made by his relative/family member. Unfortunately he had no will at the time of his death (Intestate). All efforts made revealed no link to any of his family members.

However, because of the international financial crises, a lot of reform has been made within the British Financial System; this includes the new law on succession/claims which indicates duration of time in which such inheritance could be tolerated. The financial institution has mandated me to present the Next of Kin or a relative who will claim the funds. Failure to respond to this ultimatum would legally allow the financial institution to report such funds to the Bank of England as unclaimed estate (which eventually means sending the funds straight to the Governmentґs purse)I have put in place all necessary requirements concerning the release of these funds and It is my intention to introduce this opportunity to you and have you stand as the beneficiary since you share the same surname with the deceased. Please note that I’m legally equipped with all necessary information/documentation concerning this fund.

Upon your acceptance to cooperate, I agree that 40% of this money will be for you, 40% for me and 20% goes to any acceptable charity organization in England or your country. For security & confidentiality reasons, I strongly advise that you first contact me via email [support @ ttikcoin .org]. Immediately you get in touch with me with your contact details, I would be able to inform you on more details and next steps.

In conclusion, it’s my utmost concern to demand your ultimate honesty, co-operation and confidentiality. I GUARANTEE that this process would be executed under a legitimate arrangement that would legally protect you from any breach of law.

Regards
Sebastin Schulte (Mr.)

Apparently they can send an SMS with an attached media file to your phone and there are no links to click on but your phone executes the media file and they can take control of your phone.

I think there is still a vulnerability today. Unbelievable the bugs that are left behind.

Used to get a lot of these via smail mail!

If you read it, it looks like the author is African, the grammar is just off.

Very concerned about a series of spam WhatsApp messages overnight. Requested verification via links of credit card details for a hotel booking I made for next year in Portugal.
What is most distressing is the hotel, dates of stay, my name and contact number are all accurate.
I logged into my account - booking is there.
I have reported to both SLH with whom I booked directly and the hotel itself to investigate.
The number originates from Brazil (?hotel employee)
No credit card breaches as I figure they would have already used it if they had the details
I will await the responses
Creepy

One bad thing, is that someone somewhere might have onsold details of your booking, could be the hotel management, ...
Or keylogger.
Just presupposing.
Maybe the aim of the message is for you to respond to that Whatsapp #.
