Singapore Airlines Delays/Cancellations

SQ221, the Tuesday 12 March 2040 hours SIn down to SYD (A380 9V-SKU) was airborne at 2124. On Wednesday 13, it incurred a holding pattern northeast of Goulburn so arrival is suggested as 51 late at 0831 hours.

Due to the very heavy storms in Sydney on the evening of Thursday 14 March 2019, SQ288, the 0935 hours from SIN to SYD that took off on time at 0953 (B773ER 9V-SWO) should arrive at about 2113, 48 late assuming it can land. Many domestic flights have been cancelled, diverted or are anything from an hour to three hours late.

The second sector of SQ288 from SYD to CBR, the 2135 hours on Thursday 14 March 2019 had yet to take off as at 2245 hours.

One I missed yesterday - apologies - was that SQ247 (B772ER 9V-SQL, the second sector) as the 0750 hours MEL across to WLG took off at 0806 hours but returned to MEL (diverting). It had flown a fair way above the Tasman Sea before turning back. Was this due to a fault, or a medical diversion?

On Sunday 17 March, SQ247D took off from MEL at the unseemly hour of 0128 hours, arriving WLG at 0644 where it turned around to form SQ248D, taking off at 0820 and arriving in MEL at 0941 hours. It has then formed SQ9248, an 1100 hours MEL - SIN taking off at 1120 with expected arrival today in the Lion City at 1615 hours, half an hour late.

Tuesday 19 March 2019 has SQ248, the WLG - MEL scheduled at 1445 hours but that did not take off until 1625 (B772ER 9V-SRQ) likely to arrive at 1807 hours, 97 minutes tardy. The 1755 hours second sector (MEL - SIN) will be unable to depart until at least 1915 hours.

SQ222 (Wednesday 20 March 2019, the 1610 hours SYD - SIN not airborne until 1728, A380 9V-SKQ) should arrive at about 2205 hours, 45 minutes late. The aircraft had arrived 16 early on SQ231 at 1134 hours this morning, so no obvious reason for the delay.

The Sydney Airport tower evacuation of 20 key controllers and others from about 1140 hours on Friday 29 March with full operations restored by 1319 is causing significant delays with SQ231 from SIN to SYD diverting to MEL. This scheduled 1150 hours late morning arrival in Sydney was again on its way from Melbourne at 1359, with SYD arrival suggested at 1508, 198 minutes late.

Saturday 6 April's SQ231 from SIN to SYD, the 0045 hours took off at 0129 with A380 9V-SKI. Arrival should be at 1200 'high noon', 35 late.

SQ231, the 0045 hours SIN - SYD redeye on Friday 12 April 2019 did not take off until 0226 hours. A380 9V-SKM looks to be arriving at 1149, 84 minutes tardy. With this aircraft normally forming SQ222, at this time of year the mid afternoon 1500 hours back to Singapore, this latter flight is unlikely to be delayed. Again, this shows the immense benefit to passengers of international airlines (where feasible) having greater than minimum scheduled turnarounds at 'outstations.'

Friday 31 May 2019 finds SQ207, the nicely timed "drron AFFer special" day flight, the 0745 hours SIN - MEL (A359 9V-SMS) that took off at 0852 arriving at an estimated 1755, 45 late. It had arrived in SIN 39 late at 0634 hours on SQ323 ex AMS so that explains the delay. Interesting that it's actually an AMS - MEL through service (albeit one stop). The 1825 hours MEL - SIN evening flight, SQ208 will be delayed to a departure at about 1905 hours or a little later.

UPDATE: SQ207 was in a holding pattern east of Bendigo so arrival has become 1813, 63 late, delaying the return SQ208 more.

Sunday 9 June 2019's SQ242 (B773ER 9V-SWU, the 1805 hours SYD - SIN up up and away at 2028 hours) should arrive at 0221 hours on Monday 10, 121 minutes late. It was late due to SQ241, the 0710 hours early morning SIN - SYD not becoming airborne until 1011, so arrival in SYD was at 1854 tonight instead of the timetabled 1650. The airline was thus efficient at turning the aircraft around.

SQ competitor QF has announced it will avoid Iranian airspace for QF1/2/9 and QF10, but in saying any increaase in flight time will be 'negligible', has not specified what that term means. Five minutes? Half an hour? It will be interesting if SQ publicly says it will do the same:

Sunday 23rd of June sees SQ217 SIN-MEL (A380 9V-SKG) divert to PER.

It took off from PER at 1741 and should arrive in MEL at about 2240 hours, 130 minutes late. The diversion looks to have commenced on a similar latitude to Carnarvon WA, so was it for a medical emergency on board?

Assuming the aircraft doesn't require repairs, it should be able to push back on SQ218, the 0005 hours MEL - SIN at around 0030 on Monday 24 June. This again demonstrates how wise it is for international airlines to allow a greater than minimum aircraft turnaround at 'outstations.'

On Sunday 30 June 2019, SQ212 (the 0755 hours SYD - SIN due out at 0755 but that took off at 0922) has B773ER 9V-SWS and should arrive at 1512 hours mid afternoon, 57 late.

Also, SQ241 SIN-SYD (B777 9V-SWE) is expected to arrive at 18 04, 74 min late. The return leg as SQ242 SYD-SIN has now a tentative departure at 19 15.

Passengers on QF231, the 0045 hours just after midnight SIN - SYD (A380 9V-SKG) may be tired little vegemites on Wednesday 3 July as takeoff was not until 0640 hours. Estimated arrival is 1541 hours, 316 minutes behind schedule. The aircraft had previously been on SQ807, the 1635 hours Tuesday afternoon 2 July PEK down to SIN that did not become airborne until 2310, arriving Lion City at 0432, 332 minutes late. It spent much longer in PEK than its timetable made allowance for.

This means a delay to SQ222, the 1500 hours mid afternoon 3 July 2019 SYD - SIN. A LHR or ZUR-bound flight ex SIN may also be tardy as these are some of the flights the A380 forms upon arrival ex 'the 222.'
