So what routes will VA cut ?

Are you talking about tipping what routes will be cut?
edited above.

Am thinking VA might cut some VA flights SYD/LAX in low season & boost Bris & Melb/lAX to daily, with fall back position for Syd/lax being DL codeshare. Will anyone be pissed off thinking they are on VA metal, but rather it turns out to be DL metal ?

UA had blinked first by cutting back their own SYD-LAX flights to x3 weekly during the off-season. So any adjustments to SYD-LAX by VA/DL is unlikely.

If anything, it's mostly either MEL and/or BNE that would get the frequency adjustments to LAX, with DL possibly contributing by potentially entering the MEL-LAX (or BNE-LAX) route on the days VA may not fly on.

Whichever city gets the "daily" on VA (through 77W's no. 3 and 4), DL will enter the other city instead by providing the 6th aircraft.

Yes that probably makes more sense.

going daily from Brisbane & Melbourne to LAX would surely help virgin get more business passengers who are high yield generally, which is what they need.

Had to change a departure date to LAX once which was painful. Can't remember the exact details, but I was on a morning flight, had to change to a date when no direct flight & only option was to go via Sydney or Melbourne, which didn't want to do & so ended up on a direct evening flight out of Brisbane, which wasn't ideal.

looking at some domestic trips I have to do next year.

Looked online for a BNE/MEL flight Wed January 29 & trying to support virgin but could see no flights between 5.25am & 7.55am which seemed strange. So went into travel agent & they found a flight VA 308 at 6.55am which is about the time I wanted to fly, but they said it's been zero'd out, which said meant it's in the timetable but can't book it, as it's probably going to be cancelled. I would have thought any 7am flight BNE/MEL would have been safe, but maybe due to daylight saving at 10.15am arrival in MEL too late for many.

So have a choice of 5am, 5.25am or 7.55am if want to stick to Virgin.

So it looks like even the golden triangle is not safe from cutbacks. Still leaves Virgin with 1/2 dozen nonstop BNE/MEL flights departing in am.

Dreaming of them getting some of those HND slots though. Out of SYD (hopefully) or MEL/BNE on a Friday night, I reckon you could be skiing a Honshu resort on Sat arvo, easy.

when VA had their $899 yesterday I looked up

the bcd travel link for availability.

Thought T & S class where their cheap fares.

On the link

it showed both T & S class available (9 each), but checked with travel agent as couldn't find $899 fares & they said no there were not 9 x T & S class.

So I checked again & they were showing.

Is this an issue between difference CRS companies ? One showing available & another showing not available ?

Happy for them to give up on HKG? or PER transcon?

could VA do both HKG & HND ?

Maybe drop either SYD/HKG or MEL/HKG ?
Can't see them keeping both SYD & MEL-HKG if HND opened up.

Question is probably more along the lines of do they run SYD-HKG & SYD-HND, or MEL-HND. I wonder if the extra flight time presents any issues for the crewing situation & lack of (proper) rest facility.

I wouldn’t read too much into this. It’s the last weeks of school holidays and is a week that has a long weekend (Aus Day is 27th in lieu). Both airlines adjust schedules in January to reflect the very slow business travel month. This would more than likely be compensated later in the day with a more family friendly time.

It was the same this year and last as I often work in BNE early in the year and it can be a pain.

The thread went haywire with the Skiing and Tipping chat - however to steer the ship back a few days where the ATR’s were discussed I think the challenge with operating them was not only CASA’s restrictions placed due to safety but also the VA credit rating wasn’t great and hence the leasing rates are quite high compared to other operators. It is a shame as they are great aircraft and could be used on many thin routes effectively - MEL-LST and MEL-MQL could be two.

I don't think VA will cease flying to Hong Kong as VS and VA have been given intern approved to code share. so i think it has been fully approved it will be a money maker for VA

HND is only 1 Aircraft if daily, it’s a morning flight over and overnight back according to slots they have applied for. HKG uses 2 so still 2 left on domestic. Probably lose the Nadi and BNE-PER and SYD/MEL-PER should remain as it is today

Yes sorry thought they only had 5 I was thinking of the triple fleet.

3 for Dom
2 for Hkg
1 for Hnd
