Someone's in my seat

Not one of my brightest moments.

Last to board flight and someone is sitting my 4D but 4BC are vacant. So I ask the person if they are in the right seat! Of course they should be in 4C.

And now they have the shadow.

Asking a parent to stop their darling kicking the seat is usually pointless or like poking a bear with a stick, so I put my seat up and down and up and down and up and down and then keep it down. Failing that I ask cabin crew to sort it when I get up for a pit stop.

Well I finally got a response from AA. Am I the only one who thinks they've missed the mark here?

Well I did mention that I was promised 50,000 on the plane. I doubt it's a typo .....

I'd suggest to AA they contact the airport manager to verify the promise as it was he who was summoned back to the aircraft to apologise even after the door was closed.

I'm thinking that the Capt may have initially (wrongly) believed the CSM who said you never had 1A and thus he thought it was his seat. Maybe the other F/A who told you it was a mistake pointed that out to the Capt and he's then instructed the ground staff to put the bridge back in which they would've had to authorise.

I'm tempted to respond and tell them if that's all they can offer, they can keep them - they obviously need them more than I do!

I would think that the person who checked you in made the mistake Flash. On every AA F TATL,or J when no F,1A,2A are always the pilot's seats.Same transpac.Maybe that's why the manager on the ground apologised.

Fair enough if that's the case but it's more than a failure on the check in agent, why not just block the seat and be done with it so pax can't select it?

I recently used my points to book my mother a trip from ADL-MEL in J. I chose an aisle seat as she doesn't move well. The passenger in the window seat tried to get her to change.

She had to firmly tell him that her son chose this seat because it suited her and she wasn't moving! He wasn't happy but didn't push the point with her and changed with someone else.

There have been occasional reports on FT of the same thing happening and always the same result as yours-the pax is no longer in 1A.Maybe a glitch but you would think it should be fixed as I first remember this happening several years ago.

... and in the case they don't fix it, they should at least train their front line staff to be courteous and deal with it in a respectful manner ...

I've never had anyone sitting in my seat when I get there, but I have had someone's cabin bag, and even a person standing on my seat to reach the overhead lockers! Two other instances spring to mind.

Back in 2001, QF J to SIN on a B747, I was asked to move. I was in the lower deck, window seat and seated next to a young girl (maybe 8?). Her mother was in the seat in front of her, next to an even younger child, and holding an infant in her lap. The father was seated on the upper deck! So when they asked me to move, I couldn't get up those stairs fast enough. And before disembarking, I was given a bottle of champagne by the CSM as a thank you!

In 2006, we got an upgrade to J flying QF SYD-HKG. I think it was an A330, with a 2-2-2 layout? Unfortunately we didn't know until we got to the airport so we weren't seated together. Not normally a big issue, but my partner had had a shoulder operation 3 weeks before, and couldn't use his left arm. We had been given 1B and 1K, so asked at the Qantas Pub to see if they could do anything. They managed to swap our 1B with the guy in 1J (he still had an aisle seat in the first row). I thanked the guy who swapped for us when we boarded. Happy all round.

But I agree with most on here, don't sit in someone else's seat. Wait, and ask, and normally I will say yes. If you assume and sit in my seat, unpacking your stuff, then you can just pack it back up and move!

ex HKG - I briefly removed my carryon bag from the overhead locker to retrieve something (standing, towards the end of boarding). When I went to return it, there was a large Chinese lampshade in it's place.

".....and shortly thereafter, there were many smaller fragments of what once appeared to be a Chinese lampshade surrounding my replaced bag!"
