Travel May 2016 -
BNE-SIN-BNE return 42,500 miles plus $499.86 taxes and surcharges
Same flights can be purchased outright for $896.
effectively valuing the 42500 miles at $396.

Y redemption is a terrible way to use your frequent flyer points - realistically it only makes sense in C and even more in F.

Only possible exception is during busy periods where Y fares increase substantially (e.g. Xmas) and redemption are of course unchanged, however during these periods it's almost impossible to find award seats unless you book well in advance...

.
I agree, it was meant as a demonstration of how airlines apply carrier charges onto Australian originating fares.

SQ Carrier Charges & Taxes on Business Fares

Purchase as two fares:
SYD - MNL $376
MNL - SYD $49.50

Redeem a return fare SYD-MNL-SYD Carrier & taxes are $690!

So redeem the same miles for the same flights. The difference is the carrier surcharges.

That's really weird - I just redeemed for SYD - DEL and DEL - SYD as two separate one-way redemptions and taxes & surcharges were comparable.

That is normal. MNL, GRU and AKL/CHC/WLG are the exceptions due to regulatory requirements in Philippines, Brazil and New Zealand.

That is exactly the point. The Philippine govt enacted legislation to stop airlines charges carrier fees - would be good if other governments enacted similar such that we just got all in pricing.

It's not as if we would buy an airline ticket to just sit in the aircraft on the tarmac without fuel.
