SQ service reductions during May

My SYD-SIN-JNB for 1 April became 29 March now is 27 March. SQ are beyond useless when they have schedule changes. My connecting journey is on a single ticket (VA J redemption). I assume when they move the second leg which was cancelled they just go “ok that’ll do” and press save - ignoring the fact that I now have a negative 42 hour stopover in Singapore requiring time travel back into the past to connect.

Back on the phone to VA who say we can’t accommodate you in J as there’s no award space. I explain patiently for the second time that this is a schedule change and it’s the airlines responsibility to fix it. I now have a reserved but unticketed itinerary that makes sense from a connection point of view.

Let’s see if VA and SQ can fix it. There’s plenty of J inventory for sale on all flights concerned but my main gripe is with SQ for ignoring connections which is a core part of their business model, and making more work for the pax and themselves and a lot of anger at their incompetence.

SQ - great in the air and useless on the ground.

Update to my booking drama - SQ/VA have now auto-cancelled the reservation because it breached the ticketing time limit. Apparently my res is with the "problem resolution" group. The stress that this is causing is significant as I now have no outbound flight to South Africa (aside from the stress already from Covid-19).

I am currently having the same drama with SQ cancelling 2nd leg of J reward booked through velocity and re-booking me on a flight 26 hours later that won't work for me. SQ saying they cant change the ticket and telling me to contact VA and then they are only looking at other reward seats availability.

Meant to have a supervisor from velocity ringing me today after i reached out to them through Facebook will keep you updated on how i go. Am going to request that VA contact SQ and ask to have us moved to another star alliance partner airline on the leg from Singapore to Europe that SQ have rewards seats showing available.

Wouldn't hold my breath for that. It might be a bridge too far. Your booking is through Virgin Australia who have an agreement with SQ that allow bookings on SQ metal. VA won't have an agreement with SQ's *A partners, and ultimately VA are the issuing carrier and need to sort it out. SQ won't want to incur expenses rebooking you on a *A carrier when your booking didn't originate from *A or even SQ themselves.

But no harm in asking!

Not sure where you are travelling to or from, but you might be more inclined to be successful if you were to ask them to move you to an alternative SQ destination in Europe and put you an another star alliance partner to get you from there to your original destination. Which city are you talking about?

Heading to Barcelona from Melbourne on the 8th of April and were due to land on the 9th. Have been rebooked for 2nd leg flying out 23:35 on the 9th arriving morning of 10th Am happy to go via wherever we have to in Europe to arrive on the 9th.

Unfortunately our four flights in May are still a go SYD-SIN-LHR-SIN-SYD .... plenty of time for the plug to be pulled, and everyday it looks more and more likely.

We're doing MEL-SIN-CDG-BCN-MAD-CDG-SIN-MEL in mid-Apr till mid-may. Our CDG-SIN flight was cancelled and they rescheduled us to the following day, which I accepted.

We have only booked one night accomodation in CDG for transit to BCN and was holding out till closer to book to see how everything was going. It's still getting worse, esp for France and Spain as they are currently #5 and #6 of confirmed cases ranking.

I'm not overly worried about the actual disease or catching it, more just don't want to be stuck overseas in quarantine or not allowed to transit through SIN to get back to MEL. Not a great way to spend a holiday. We're 95% sure we will cancel our trip. Just waiting for the announcement from Accor and SQ to waive chance/cancel fees before we cancel.

We're lucky, have zero land bookings, only award flights - so very easy to pull the pin. Must have known something, because that is a first for us in 30 years of travelling.

Travel Insurance is the only concern from here. Where do you stand with that?

Well, I think you would really only need travel insurance for medical if you are overseas, but most, if not all, don't cover for these en/epi/pandemics. "Most" airlines and accomodation suppliers are offering full refund and fee waivers or a large chunk of it back.

There was also news that Aus may be banning flights to europe soon, following what the US have done.

Iff Government ban flights to europe, and your airline/accom aren't allowing refunds, would you be able to claim TI due to government decision?

It will most likely depend on your policy. I have an annual multi trip for the family, issued by QF, underwritten by NIB. This policy has a general exclusion that basically details if your plans are disrupted as a result of a government decision we would not be covered. It was a contributing factor to cancelling our April trip.

Semantics I know, but they will not ban flights to Europe. There is only one flight Australia to Europe anyway (soon to be 2) that doesn't touch somewhere else in between, and only two flights where the same flight/plane continues onto Europe (soon to be 1) after touching SIN.

What they may choose to do is place restrictions on foreigners who have visited certain countries in the previous 14 days, and require returning citizens and residents to either self isolate or undergo quarantine for 14 days. This of course would dramatically reduce the number of flights, but does not constitute a ban on flights.

I think the other very real problem is that 14 day isolation periods post-flight are most likely going to become the norm for many arrivals, and that will make multi-city trips like yours impossible. That is if one is actually able to still fly in the first place.

Any Rerouting suggestions for SIN - JFK? Now SQ 26 on 13 May SIN - FRA - JFK Is cancelled. MMB not showing alternatives as yet.

Is the problem transiting FRA - US now Schengen banned by Trump.

What class of travel? If PE or J then SIN-EWR would be the obvious choice.

Would much prefer to keep Suites. But yes it’s obvious SIN-EWR in J might to get me there.

Original flights still showing in MMB. Any Other suites ideas?

Unfortunately, the closest you can get to NYC in Suites is LHR. SQ codeshare on VS across the atlantic LHR-JFK but if an award ticket, I expect that this would not be an option.

We each used two old suites each today to get to London. All the customer servicing staff on board now have to wear masks which they change 4 hourly since 7th March.

SQ FB page announcements, no flights to and from many European countries until end of may and no transits through SIN if you're from a number of European countries. Sorry, can't copy paste links at the moment but was able to grab this
