SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Flew Brisbane to Singapore on SQ236 on Saturday in J. Cabin nearly full with 3 spare seats. There were 3 cabin crew in J and service was not up to standard I have had before. No offer of topping up of drinks in between courses including water which was disappointing.

Travelling with wife and mother. Wife has seafood allergy and as I have done before I emailed SQ some time ago with details of seafood allergy which I received an acknowledgment of. Appetiser was a salad of colossal crab and no substitute offered. Not even bread whist I enjoyed I mine.

On a positive note we were travelling with my mother who can not walk long distances and in same email I included those details. At check in at Brisbane we were provided with a wheel chair and upon arrival in Changi there was a wheel chair provided upon exiting and the attendant stayed with us until we collected we arrived at our vehicle transfer. Very impressed with that part of the service.

I have the same issue - not an allergy but I don't eat most seafood. 'No seafood' is not a standard request in terms of meals - it has to be manually requested (something like 'SPML no seafood'). Whether this gets picked up - and what the airline does to deliver that - varies. Often there is inconsistency in the same airline - some days they handle it well, others they don't.

To be on the safe side, the best option is to choose a recognised non-seafood option... like vegetarian.

edited... see info from dajop below, 'non seafood' is now an option on SQ

I have no allergies but in this situation wouldn't BTC be an option?

At the very least in J and F (not sure about Y) "Non seafood" can be selected as a meal request option. This was added to the list of choices earlier this year. From memory, there is a thread on this topic in the SQ forum in Flyertalk.

Hi All,

I am hoping for some advice.

My boyfriend and I are travelling to Europe and I was hoping to figure out a way for Lounge Access.

We are travelling SQ and I am a United frequent flyer (no status)

At the moment we have booked SYD/ZRH - LHR/SYD

Layover on the way is only an hour - so only need lounge in SYD

Layover on return is 3.5hrs so would like lounge access in SIN and at LHR.

Bonus would be lounge access at our internal europe flights - potentially CPH, AMS. RKV and CDG (these are departure points) for flights we have not yet booked.

I am considering getting an American Express card to access their lounges. Cheapest easier option (do qualify i think!)

Pay as you go access access or pay for something like Qantas Club equivalent (if it exists) via Mileage Plus or Krisflyer oh and I am a virgin frequent flyer as well -not sure if that helps with SQ?)

Any thoughts appreciated

Thanks
Ozzie

I gather these are paid seats in Y. J product would give lounge access. Some bank issued Amex (Westpac Black) give lounge access via Priority Pass (PP) but this is 2 per year and you must pay for guests. You can pay for PP access on a single use basis for US$27. If you think you can drink and eat enough then it could represent good value, but 3.5hrs is not a huge time in SIN and the standard lounges are ok to get away from the crowds. The SIN terminals are huge and there is a lot to see if you want to wander around.

There are PP lounges in most Euro terminals.

If you would like a referral to Amex Platinum Edge I am happy to oblige, but it will not get you lounge access generally. It will get you Amex lounge access in Sydney. The food is nice and grog free. Weigh that up against annual cost $195 but free for 1 year at the moment.

LHR can be a bit of zoo, can understand a reason for wanting lounge access.

However at Changi there are options for
1) Paid lounge access - see here
2) Recreating the lounge experience - plenty of spaces, particuarly on Level 3 (up the escalators) where you can re-create the lounge experience for minimal cost (free wifi, comfortable seating, quiet zones). You can pay reasonable rates for food and beverage nearby and take them back to your desired seating area. Can also pay for shower access at lounge for about $16.
3) Go for a swim and relax by the pool in T1 (Also about $16).

Its more about showers and charging points than food or space.

I find night flights much more bearable when being able to shower before boarding and charging stations before boarding a flight (when you have been unable to access) is just a given!

I was pleasantly surprised to find my upcoming SQ 890 SIN-HKG has been swapped to an A350!

ExpertFlyer is showing the premium economy seats as part of the economy cabin. As far as I know, PE is not normally sold on that flight. Does that mean there's no PE service, and it's selectable by Y passengers? Is that something normally SQ does?

Unfortunately I can't select online as it's booked as a VA codeshare, but when I called and asked they said they could "request" 31 K. No idea whether status played a part, but I would expect no given the little recognition for partners normally? (I have VA on this ticket, not O6 *G.) I hope that will come through and isn't just a mistake...

First news am greeted with lounge tonight is that Cafe Vue have been shafted as lounge providors and replaced by a Sydney mob Trippers White - apparently they currently supply SKL in SYD and PER.

Change took effect on Wed 18th - first change they make is no buffet hot food in F section - you need to wander over to J section to take in your buffet rations.

But staff will wander amongst F guests and ask basically 'What would you like? We can prepare anything!' Now I didn't test them even though the girls almost twisted my arm up my back - Cruiserette has me on. Diet - she said if that TwiigyK can lose 10kg why can't I? Thanks Jognny - look what you have done now. Seriously girls said they have vast array of food they can prepare for F pax - no idea what they can produce. What is state of play in SYD F?

Changes makes little diff IMHO - as long as plonk cold then I'm a happy little vegemite.

Menus out tonight. Was brought a very nice green curry.

Following up from Goodonya's posting in another thread - some loud mouth speaker phone conversationalist in MEL SKL F just got the 'stink eye' and amazing volume went down about 50 decibels immediately - you do not have to tolerate this behaviour you know!

So the answer turns out to be that yes it's used as PE seating, Y service! But no you can't seem to select it in any way. In fact, I couldn't even get any boarding pass at all from SQ staff at PER as the flight "hadn't been finalised yet" (this was about 8 hours before departure), assigned seat or not.

In the end, even though none of my requested seats came through, I got a row 32 seat and had a great flight! The A350 is one nice plane, and the PE seat is well designed. One of them was already defective though and blocked off, so someone got a J op-up out of it.

Took a visit up the stairs from R to J on 308 SIN-LHR yesterday and apon checking menu discovered this gem:

First shock I got on boarding 218 on Mon night was the change in slipper colours:

Out with the the charcoal and in with the taupe - clashed ever so badly with my make up and hair colour!

It's closer to 5-6 years, but yes - it has been a while ;)

I am fairly sure I had it in 2010 on a flight of particular note.
