SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Hi all, I'm doing some research here for a 2018 suites booking.

I was originally going to do MEL-SIN-LHR-SIN-MEL, but now I'm considering MEL-SIN-FRA-JFK-FRA-SIN-MEL. But I can't find any F/R award saver availability anywhere.. Can anyone else find any?

JFK would be one of the hardest routes to get to / from SYD

Are the dates you want already bookable?

Big SHOUT OUT to my friend, Cruiser Elite!!
His efforts, through his network of contacts at Kris, have resolved a points issue of mine in double-quick time.

Many thanks, once again!

We actually found availability was quite plentiful as long as you were looking at the furthest available dates.

I'm currently looking at max dates, which is around the new year, so that may be why I can't find any.

I'm looking to book a holiday in July 2018, so still six months til the flights become bookable. I'm just researching for the moment.

Does anyone have advice on the best method of booking A multi-country flight with no direct service? Travelling Melbourne-Singapore-Tokyo (Haneda or Narita, no preference) -Taipei-Singapore-Melbourne later in theis year, probably reward as well (availability is looking fine).

As there's no Singapore or codeshare partner flights for Japan to Taiwan, my plan was to fly into Taipei, then take a return flight to Tokyo on Jetstar/scoot/someone cheap for about $200. if I book rewards, it's 50k miles for Taipei return or 75k for Tokyo, so it looks like I come out ahead?

One last thing, I've got all my points currently with VF, so I'd be transferring them to Krisflyer, booking online to save 15%? As I don't have any current Krisflyer points or status, is there taxes on top of the miles? If so, how/where can I find out this amount for a MEL-TPE or MEL-NRT/HAN return flight?

Cheers

Do you need stopovers in SIN? If not the simplest way it to make the bookings as two one-way award bookings ... MEL-SIN-TYO and the other TPE-SIN-MEL for 25k + 37.5k respectively (-15%). There will be substantial taxes. You can get breakdown by doing a dummy commercial booking, there is somewhere you can show the breakdown between the fare (which you won't be paying) and the surcharges (which you will need to pay for award booking)>

Thanks for that, no stopovers in Singapore needed. Doing a dummy booking, Melbourne to TaipeiCOST
FLIGHTS
Fare 208.00
Airport/Government taxes 86.39
Carrier surcharges 308.80
Sub-total AUD 603.19

Wait, so is that 25K miles (-15%) PLUS $395.19 ($603.19 - $208 fare) for the one flight?

Looks like converting to KF isn't worth it then? It's 105k VF points all inclusive for return to Taipei, or 84k + $136. Sticking with VF looks to be the best in my case then?

Thanks for the advice. Maybe it's time I look at flying at the pointy end. I was thinking of paying out of pocket for this trip, to bank the points for RTW or return in J to Europe and the end of the year. Back to the research I think.

I think anything around holidays will always be tricky to find.

Sounds like you'll have to hold ya horses for a few months :)

There's a guilty pleasure in doing dummy booking though. Seems to build the anticipation of a holiday.

Just want to give some feedback on a thread from a few months ago.

Stayed at Terminal 3 transit hotel, was whisper quiet, you could hear no construction noise at all.

A good option for light sleepers

Did you have to call up to book MEL-SIN-FRA-JFK?? I think I read somewhere that you do? Can I definately confirm someone booked MEL/SYD-SIN-FRA-JFK online?

Furthermore, looking at dummy bookings one way MEL-SIN-FRA-JFK the last waitlist day is NOV 8, then on NOV 9 they are 'not available'. Anyone know what the go is ?

Often it won't become available until the later segments come online.

If you just search via your KF account - even if you have no points there, the taxes and fuel fines will show up in a dummy reward booking.

I don't know if it's just me, but I find the KF account a really easy search and booking engine! I seem to find plenty of Suite Saver availability (by being flexible) and I've even got my +1 to commit to a holiday date. I keep wondering what I'm doing wrong and when it's going to jump on me from a great height!

my only wish would be for a calendar function where you could show what days J / F awards are available. similar to QF I suppose, but it would work better since it's only for SQ. Since they don't allow mixed bookings online you'd only get full J/F flights showing up.

The old phone app used to let you do -/+ 3 days so you could check out a week at a time.
