SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

B777 is fine. I would just like to have a suite for one of my legs to CDG, as the SIN-CDG leg has already had the A380 subbed out.

lol, same, I just wanna do it once! Never mind!
(and thanks again for the earlier tip but my Hubs suggested that clearing customs & transferring in Syd to VA J was not the first class experience he had in mind. I tend to agree!)

The *main* advantage of the suite is for sleeping. Everything else, amenities, service etc is same same.

Either it is me being a deep sleeper, I sleep just as well on CX Cirrus J seats and SQ J compare to the SIA Suites. I guess having the door closed helps.

I actually look forward to my first new SQ F on B777ER on SQ2 SIN-HKG in mid January. Will fly in on A380 Suites so would be good to compare it.

Suites also have other advantages in terms hard product:
1. R seat is better for 'sitting' than 'old F' - 'new F' about on par
2. R storage space for HL further away under ottoman so your feet don't keep kicking HL
3. R much bigger bench space to middle to rest your personal items rather than shelf below TV screen
4. R has personal mini wardrobe to hang / access your items anytime
5. R much more private and secluded for those who want to shut themselves away from the world
6. R much bigger bench space to middle to position you BYO ent device to continue watching during meal service
7. R has storage space adjacent to your head upper body for water etc much more accessible during night
8. R has far greater storage space on top ottoman for personal items even when seat in total recline
9. R cabin has much bigger toilets for ease of changing etc
10. R has Gold BPs - as Brucey would say - they are 'Speeeeciaaaaal!'

But as MEL posted soft product should be identical.

Firstly, I am not sure if this is the right place to post my questions, so i apologise in advance if it is not.
At the moment, i am planning to fly out from LHR back to MEL with SQ in late July 2018. (I have already redeemed a one way J ticket with SQ to LHR in June 2018.)
This is also my 1st time flying into LHR.

Some questions with regards to Heathrow T2 :
1) Does it take a long time to clear T2 passport control and security checks ? (I know SQ allows check in 4 hours prior to departure, so i guess that helps to lessen the stress)
2) Are the early morning departure flights busier than the late evening flights ? (I was planning to take the SQ305 flight which departs at 0925am)
3) Do SQ J and F class passengers have access to some kind of fast track immigration and security lanes for depature flights?
4) I am also considering flying out of AMS or ZRH with SQ. Do these airports offer a less stressful and more pleasant departure experience, compared to LHR T2 ?

Advance thanks to all replies.

I do this every 6 weeks or so from T2.

1 - There is no passport control leaving the UK. Security check ~ 10 mins
2 - I often take the 09h25 and the 20h00. No difference to me.
3 - Yes - Fast track security is well signed and just to the right of the normal security entry.
4 - No comment on this one apart from T2 departures is not stressful IMO.

Travelled CNX-SIN-SYD on Wednesday on MI and SQ in economy.

Wrapped the golf clubs in CNX. Arrived in SYD and the bag/clubs damaged. Looks like bag was dropped on the head of golf driver and dragged along and wrapping has been cut and golf bag cover cut. Other damage to golf bag. And the scoop of the golf ball retriever has also napped.

Not SQ's fault but lodged report at airport. Told to go to SYD luggage store which I did on Friday. They don't specialise in golf bags/clubs but cannot repair anyway. They sent email to SQ baggage services and they sent email the next day apologising and requesting photos and receipts of goods.

Not happy about the damage but good follow up from SQ. See what they have to offer.

I am trying to book an SQ J reward ticket from China to Istanbul next May. There seems to be plenty of availability but when ever I try to book Beijing-Istanbul it tells me I am back tracking and says that this is outside the fare rules. I can book Shanghai or Wuhan or Xiamen etc no problem and will do so if I have to but Beijing is preferable because we will be in Nth China at the time.

Is this correct or is it a glitch in the website.

Beijing is certainly east of Singapore and as we are travelling west I fail to see how this is back tracking.

Also will we be able to use the lounge (think it is the Turkish Airways one) at Istanbul after our flight while we wait for a domestic connection.

The reason I haven't called them up is that I am in China and have no phone access. When I am on the road I just keep contact by email.

As an update I have found a great solution for my situation by playing around with the award tables. People on this forum have been such a great help and I am starting to get the hang of things. Thanks.

I can get J reward Bangkok to Istanbul for 45000 KrisFlyer points. So we will get two legs of J flights and two lounge visits at Bangkok and a lengthy stop over in Singapore with plenty of time to check out the airport and lounge. We can just fly cheaply <$300 from Nth China and save at total of 35,000 pts (45K compared to 62.5K) over flying from say Shanghai-Istanbul. We would have needed a flight to Shanghai anyway from where we will be in Shenyang. AND we now get to spend a couple of days in Bangkok.

So I have one more question. The flight to Istanbul from Singapore is an overnight flight on a 777-200. Do the 777-200's on this route have lie flat seats or are they the old angled flat seats?

Well if that don't take the cake - BKK-SIN-IST is processing online as a valid routing:

And so is PVG-SIN-IST:

But PEK-SIN-IST still processing as 'Backtracking' and not a valid routing:

Go figure! I will call my new girl tonight and try to get clarification exactly what 'Backtracking' is.

Just found out about the First Class entry in T3 SIN. My god, was that by far the quickest check in to lounge process I've ever gone through! We also requested a buggy to our gate so we could grin at fellow Y PAX as we fly by.

Also putting in some feedback of the new 777-300ER in F Class. I found the IFE modern and quite refreshing. Being quite tall the 777 in bed configuration was practically a head to toe fit and I had to sleep diagonally or with legs bent. Personally I preferred the A380 Suite in bed mode. Similar to my previous experience on a 777, it had limited menu options available. For instance, bircher muesli for breakfast was unavailable even though no other PAX has ordered it.

KrisFlyer Terms and Conditions

I. Singapore Airlines and SilkAir redemption and upgrade awards

22. Award Redemption - Award Calculation Rules

a) Travel must be via a published route. Backtracking is not permitted except as required by route restrictions. Backtracking occurs when a journey does not continue in the same direction in which it began. An itinerary containing a backtracking sector not required by route restrictions may require separate tickets.

In this scenario PEK-SIN-IST doesn't seem like a backtrack. A better example would be MLE-SIN-AUH.

Just booked the flights.

I am very happy. Works out great for us and the bonus is the few days in Bangkok a city I have not yet travelled to. All this for minimal extra expense and major points saving which virtually makes it a free trip.

:)

Our second J points booking. Haven't flown yet though. First flight will be a Beijing-Sydney trip in 10 days. Getting exited about that.

Exactly. I mentioned these examples above. The most likely explanation is that it will exceed MPM for PEK given the direct route is ~4000 miles, and via SIN pushes that out closer to 8k. PVG-IST is a greater distance to start with, ~5000 miles, so the routing via SIN brings it much closer to an allowed MPM.

Thanks so much for the helpful reply Comoman !

Cruiserette never opens the 'Amenity Packs' as she usually just gifts them to a deserving cause on her return home - a crew member just happened to mention how handy the actual bags are now that they are including a shoulder strap:

Means nothing to me but apparently now turns into a terribly handy SF clutch with a shoulder strap. I am advised it is the perfect size for those ultra imperative items incl iPhone 6+.

Looking through this thread with the wife as we are getting exited about our first J flights (and it takes a lot to get this old guy exited).

She spotted this and would like me to ask. I assume this is only for first class?

If we asked kindly do you think she may procure one?

For first class only. Asking for one on board would almost certainly lead to a polite refusal. Your best bet would be to try and get one through other means on the ground.

PM me woody and I will see what I can do - don't mention to wifey yet.

Yes 99.9% chance that it will be. The aircraft operating this route have been equipped with 1-2-1 configured full flat seats for the last 3 or 4 years. The seat map of your desired flight should confirm that. nb, as with any carrier, there's always the chance that something seriously goes wrong and you get an inferior aircraft, but chances of that are very slim.
