SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Thanks for your reply. Ended up calling today and whilst there was a bit of hair pulling, wasn't too bad and had a helpful agent who managed to get everything changed for us.

That's interesting as I booked a flight with KF under the old charts flying on Thai- perhaps that is the issue, but they wouldn't let me change to the same flight one day earlier without paying the increased point rate of 10,000 points. I didn't do it but would still change it if I can only pay the change fee and not the extra points.

Does anyone know if SQ Melbourne check in counters (business) stay open throughout the evening e.g. from 6pm to 10pm. My wife and I are on the 1:05am flight (business) and thinking we might get to the airport about 5 hours before departure. From memory the early evening flight check in closes around 6pm. Don't really want to wait in the departures area when we could be relaxing in the lounge.

Hi everyone I'm after any general advise/tips, to get myself my wife and our 12 year old son to Germany in around July - September 2019. Flying in J for a 6 week dream holiday. We are based in Adelaide

I have 500,000 velocity points atm looks like I will need 300,000 more and probably will transfer over to Kriss Flyers and fly with SQ. any tips on getting more points apriciated

The availability in J with SQ seems ok on the flights there but the return seems more difficult.

We really want to spend time in Hamburg, Berlin, get over to Switzerland and Amsterdam and still researching other places,

Most of the availability with SQ seems to be too and from Frankfurt is this correct? Just in the planning atm, so doesn't matter to much where we land or take of from, also any advice or ideas for a stop over would be helpful.

We went to Singapore in J last July and are hooked on the SQ product, the experience was amazing, seeing my wife and son with a grin that lasted most of the flight was worth every point collected

Thanks in advance
Clive

First tip: No need to transfer points to SQ. Book straight from Velocity.

The one time we took that flight we had to wait 5-10 minutes for check-in to open

No it is not correct.

You can redeem in and out of all SQ destinations if you book early.

You can also fly out of other cities by using a *A redemption booked through Krisfyer. ie In July I fly out of Denmark on Luhthansa and then with SW in Suites from Frankfurt.

But I have also flown in or out of London, Manchester, Rome, Milan, Paris and Zurich in J or F. I have always gained the city I wanted, but I do book at the max time out. With up to 5 of us I have had to sometimes split the party and book on consecutive days/flights.

TIP 1. Book as two one-way redemptions. That way you have the maximum chance of getting the flights you want.

If you try and book as a return ticket then you are going others a 6 week head-start at a period when demand is high.

TIP 2. If September is due to school holidays you may be trying for exactly the same day as many others if you try and come back landing on Sunday. So think about a day or two earlier or later.

TIP 3 If you miss out you can probably redeem a *A on Thai as a Plan B.

For all of my European trips I have flown into one city and out of another. This saves back tracking or seeing the one city twice.

ie My next trip is in London, out Copenhagen.
The one prior in Paris, out Rome. Before that, in Zurich, out Frankfurt etc.

You can get economy flights very cheap in Europe, business is not much better for a lot more $$$. The trains are generally very good and are highly recommended.

Thanks LT makes sense, we are going for 6-7 weeks, and love the idea of train travel, so may try and find a available flight in at one location and work our way to the return flight at another.

I am fairly sure that SQ checkin is open only from 3 hours orior to departure, so in this case from 10:05pm. There is no point getting to the airport sooner.

From here: Counter check-in for Singapore Airlines flights

If an A380, counter opens 3.5hrs beforehand in Melb, if anything else - 3hrs.

It is so unfortunate that the airlines do not cater for those of us who wish to fully immerse ourselves in the whole experience.

Luckily at Singapore, in transit, 12-14 hours (if so dedicated) or more is possible in The Private Room. Although lack of ice cream vs general 1st Class lounge may necessitate some visits.

Had similar disappointment with check-in in Sydney which opened precisely at the 3.5 hour time despite all the staff standing around for over 20 minutes before they opened it up. Those 20 minutes saw at least 6 other planes/airlines opening and even the express queue was a long queue. Cutting significantly into 'lounging' time.

It is probably because the majority of their customers are silly irrational people who want to minimize their overall travel time...

Technically, the counters for SQ 208 close (on current timetable) at 18:45. But in practice they close when the last passenger checks in. Usually open to at last one hour before flight. In any event lounge is OK, but not “fantastic” by any stretch, and you can lounge hop to NZ lounge as well but wouldn’t want to spend 4-5 hrs there. 2-3 hrs is enough time.

We fly home from Paris this week, really looking forward to our first long haul F experience. Unfortunately, our carefully chosen 380 has been subbed for a 777 on both legs, but still we’ve never been so excited about leaving Europe to return home!

Thanks to all here who shared advice to help make this happen :)

Surely you would be able to ask TPR staff to fetch some for you?

Although I do understand the necessity to stretch the legs occasionally

I suppose it fell into a combination of:
  • 'The grass is always greener';
  • "If we're the only two in here how many are in the 1st lounge?"
