SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

We have a short stopover on Saturday morning to do a tester Cruiser Elite. We may barely make it but should be ok as we get tail wind assistance from London.
Won’t be missing you by much cove - heading back to MEL from PVG Sat nt - have PVG-SIN confirmed in new Suites but not SIN-MEL as yet. Have J conf all the way through - might just go with that even with the dodgy new J seat on 380 but the J Cabin SQ girls just so much fun

Great tips @LadyC. Taken on board for our lloooong trip to YYZ via SIN. Our son will be 2y4m by then
No worries. This forum has given me a lot so always happy to chip in where I can. Let me know if you have any other questions. MasterC has done a lot of travel for someone his age, most of it with SQ (not to North America but we have done Europe and back).

Any tips for infants? We'll be taking the little one to the US at 3 months (on QF) and Thailand at 5 months (on SQ).

Well it is along time since my 3 daughters were that age but.

TIP ONE: One take off and landing feed the baby (ie breast/bottle) as this equalises ear pressure through the act of drinking and feeding is always very comforting for the baby and in particular breast feeding.

With air pressure all a baby knows is that it HURTS, and all they can do about it is cry.

Starting with a happy baby helps them settle with the rest of the flight. So try and have your baby so that they will want to feed on take off (or just after before the change in pressure kicks in) and landing.

TIP TWO: All babies are different in what they like, and our like. Our 3 girls were all quite different and so you will soon learn what this particular one likes. ie One of our daughters wanted to be constantly held..so tag team for mum and dad (and perhaps a FA if you find a clucky one). Whereas one of the others often just wanted to lie on the ground/ bassinet and not be held all the time. So make sure you have a rug that they like and are used to the smells of if yours is one of these.

TIP THREE: Well at 3 and 5 months the baby entertainment system is basically just mum and dad (and said clucky FA if you are lucky, but do not plan on this). So be prepared that one of you will often need to engage with the baby. If you are lucky you will have"a "sleeper ".Some babies however find being a plain just keeps them awake, which unfortunately may lead to crying.

Feeding on take off definitely the plan. We’ve already allocated the bassinet on SQ which will hopefully make things easier. Between two of us it should hopefully be manageable.

We don't drink juice (too much sugar) so either water or milk. SQ have been happy to put some milk in a cup with a straw for MasterC.

yeah we don't do juice either for the same reason. at home its water only. he's not a fan of drinking milk, grr.
just preempting the question I'll get while sipping on my Singapore sling :D while he is sipping water lol

We get offered juice, chocolates, all sorts of rubbish and we have to be quite proactive in running interference so they don't get given to MasterC (which then becomes a battle of having to take something away).

If you take bottles of water or formula loosen them slightly before takeoff so the pressure drop doesn’t cause it to all sqeeze out. My two are 6 and 3 and I still forget sometimes.

Tips for travelling with infants/children based on my experience:
- if you book an infant they assume you will bring your own food and drinks. For very small children who are only on breast milk thats no problem but if they are older then you will need to ring them and ask for a infant meal. Usually a pouch/jar of slop but best to pack all your own stuff just in case. If they are formula milk fed then you wont be able to sterilise anything on the plane, need to pack all your own equipment.
- if you book a infant or child who is on solids they wont pack a childs meal unless you specify it. As mentioned before the meal generally includes unhealthy sugary stuff which most people wouldnt give to their child.
- if you are booking for a child 2 year old or more they will be full fare and have their own seat but again you will need to order a childs meal otherwise they will pack an adult meal.
- for travelling with a really small baby 6 months or less it was very easy if they are breast feeding. Drink, sleep, cry, drink, sleep, cry. They should fit in the bassinet however most planes will not have a bassinet harness which means if there is turbulence you will have to take them out of the bassinet and put them in that little harness they get tethered to yours.
- once the baby is older than 6 months it was more tricky as he could get up and then stand and walk and just wouldnt sleep. Night flights were a disaster as he didnt sleep which meant we didnt. We now only book day flights so that means if he doesnt sleep (and therefore we dont) then we arrive at our destination and can hit the hay and are good to go the next day.
- if you need to express milk on the plane if there is a power points you can use an Australian pin converter and it should work fine. It is quite easy to do incognito as the plane engine noise is so loud.

Have fun.

I have searched everywhere and cannot find the answer.
Am I able to mix a KF award between a *A airline and a partner?
eg.
IST-SIN (TK) - SYD (SQ) - OOL (VA)

Fifa,

Pretty sure the answer is no. The partner is the problem (VA). They are not part of star alliance.

The equivalent in QFF is booking a one world RTW- everyone wants to include Emirates but you cant as they are not in one world.

Happy to be corrected.

Thanks Pele
That makes sense. I'll just fly into BNE and cop the extra cost to get back to the Coast.

No.

You either book a KF Award, Parner Award or a *A Award.

With *A Award you can include SQ as part of it as SQ is a *A Member, but not Partners who are not *A Members.

KF Awards are just SQ metal including SilkAir.

Other flying with babies tip i forgot:

- for breastfeeding on takeoff and landing- remember not to start too early. It can be 25 minutes from push back till wheels up. Wait until the pilot is accelerating on the take off before latching.

You can also give a dummy if it's not feeding time yet. Its more the chewing/sucking motion that helps alleviate the pressure change. So feeding or dummy will help either way. Chewing gum for adults will also do the same thing.

Sometimes they will pack a kids play pack, which may or may not contain jar food. I'm sure one can be found somewhere on the plane if requested.

FAs are happy to rinse your bottles in hot water or fill it up if needed, assuming it's not busy. They can also store your bottles (filled with water/milk) in the fridge if they have space and also heat up jar food.

We've found that the short flights (1-3hrs) were worse compared to longer flights (>6hrs) as on the shorter flight there is less time at cruising altitude and more time changing altitude which will upset bubs more.

If' it's a long flight, I normally pack some meds into the carry on just in case of teething etc. Things like Panadol/Nurofen. If it helps soothe the teething pain and reduces crying, it's also going to help reduce the greasy looks from other passengers. I also pack some telfast because bubs is a massive scratcher and it helps "sometimes".

As lovetravellingoz mentioned, you may get a clucky FA or two, who will be willing to take bubs off your hands for a bit. We had one take bubs for about 15mins. The missus and I got a quick nap in before I woke up and felt bad and offered to take bubs back off the FAs hands.
