SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Doing MEL-HKG in a week and will be doing MEL-SIN (& SIN-MEL) in 777 and then the HKG legs in the new suites. Looking forward to experiencing the new suites. Will have our 22 month old with us, so hoping the extra space will be enough for her to run around in and climb up and down.

We have done SQ F under the old fitout (both Suites and regular) with MasterC a few times up until he was about 3 years old. He is not particularly active but we found there is plenty of space to have some toys/books/puzzles out and still be able to sit next to myself or the Gentleman. The SQ staff were usually great with him also.

Has anyone had any recent experience booking a mixed class redemption?
Looking at SYD-SIN-MAA, where there is only J for the second segment.
Saver J is 84k miles, F is 116k. What would the F/J combination be?
Priced separately they would be 85 + 39 = 124k.

We made a mixed class booking this month, SYD-SIN(F) - SIN-LAX (J) and it was 167K.
SYD-SIN in R is 85K
SIN-LAX in J is 95K
So it saved 13K points each pax

When we first called just to see how many miles it would be, he quoted the 180K, we said ok, we would call back when we moved the points over from Amex.

He called US back after about 5 minutes, advising he had misquoted and it was actually lower, then he offered to book and hold the reservation for us, but we would have to ticket it by January 2020 (march 2020 flights), and of course waived booking fees since it wasn't able to be done on the phone. Such great service.

The SQ Award Chart has all the info you require to calculate pts reqd for mixed class bookings - ALWAYS do your homework before calling - SQ/KF Call Ctr is a contract call ctr staffed mainly by non SQ employees - most Team Leaders / Managers are indeed employed full time by SQ - staff turnover can be high with new agents continually joining the team - you cannot expect every agent you contact to know the system backwards.

So again do your homework before calling and you should be able to get set.

I've selected couple seats for old and new suites, and we'll get to road test them one after the other coming back from Paris.... must say the vid of the new suites looks pretty bloody good.

Can understand the negative feeling about the cabin reducing by half, but some on here would suggest preferring more seats in a cabin is akin to sitting in economy.
Assuming it's your first experience in both, please report back since you get to compare back to back and would be good to hear first hand first time experience

random question:
ive been reading the qantas rtw one network flight thread, its huge

I didnt know singapore had a similar one,
on face value the points required is far less, taxes ridiculously low,

it doesnt seem very popular on here at all, very little mentioned,

am I missing some major CONS to the product?

Will do. We depart at the end of the week flying QF F ... the SQ suites will be the return journey, so another week or so after that.

We've done a few F flights with the little one. She loves climbing over that middle barrier in the double suites. So trying out the new suites with all that space for her to jump up and climb over the beds should help tire herself out.

Oh wow up until 3? So I assume MasterC had his own seat? We are rethinking our travel habits once she turns 2. It's going to be so hard justifying flying F with a 2 year but harder giving up the lifestyle. Seeing their small bodies sit inside an F/R seat seems like such a waste and it'll be worse if they don't even sit in it and want to sit with the parents.

Depending on the route and airline, the taxes and feescan also be pretty high. It varies a lot but LH and TK usually attracts higher charges.

We're about to do one in J with our then 2.5yo, in July. I'm a bit stressed about the same things. Will they still give an infant seat belt if he doesn't want to sit alone. What about sleep time. SQ J should be okay. We're then on EVA air in J which isn't side by side like SQ so might be tougher again..

Yes, we travelled in F with him when redemption rates were better, easier to earn points and easier to redeem 2 F savers. Relegated back to J now! I make a concerted effort to points gather to ensure when travelling we can do it at the pointy end. The Gentleman is 190cm tall so we all value the extra space in the premium cabin.

We have successfully travelled with MasterC still in a lapbelt with me for take off and landing multiple times when he was 2 years old plus and had his own seat (when travelling SQ). We generally ask the staff straight after boarding and most have been comfortable in the first instance with giving us the lap belt straight away. When there was hesitation from the staff, the Gentleman would try and be a bit more persuasive (not aggressive) in stating that MasterC would likely be very upset. This usually convinced them to give us the lap belt. So my suggestion is ask early on and if you get push back, reiterate your concern over your son's needs.

It might be worth checking the regulations that apply to any flights you want to take with infants or children.

Just a quick search this morning it seems that Australia considers an infant ‘up to their third birthday’. Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority seems to indicate any child ‘over two’ must be properly restrained in their own seat.

Given my search was only cursory, these might not be the latest advices (although Singapore’s Advisroy Corcular AC AOC-43(0) is dated 19June 2018).

Asking cabin crew to ignore these regulations could lead to heavy fines or other sanctions for both the crew and the airline. Being ‘persuasive’ or otherwise expressing ‘concern’ could get someone fired.

If the cabin crew aren't comfortable with doing it then they won't. I have also been refused but for the most part the cabin crew have been comfortable with allowing MasterC to sit next to me with an infant lap belt on.

i don't see an issue with this when the child is not comfortable on his/her own. 8hrs is going to be tough as it is.. having an unhappy toddler in J... woah!

Agree. This is why the cabin crew are usually happy to allow it. MasterC happily sits by himself now (age 5) but just because he required a seat from age 2 didn't mean he was immediately comfortable with doing so. Maybe part of our luck with it is because we fly J/F. And to be clear, when I say be persuasive and express concern, the conversation on boarding would usually be:

The gentleman: 'Hi, I was hoping we could get a lap belt for my son so he could sit with my wife on take off. It will make it easier to settle him so he won't disturb the cabin'
Cabin Crew: 'Sure, we can get one for you' or 'He has his own seat to sit in'
The gentleman: 'Yes he does but it will make him more comfortable and he won't get upset and cry if he is sitting with his mother'
Cabin crew: 'Sure, we can get one for you'.

If the cabin crew was insistent at that point it was not allowed, we let it go. Just my data point - YMMV.

Has anyone managed to get two double bed seats (on the new A380 config) on an award flight? The flight I'm on shows they're blocked out (per the SIA website) but not occupied (per EF).

Yes had 1A and 2A on PVG-SIN as a single pax but did call to select 1A as o wanted to see if as bad as a friend told me it was - there was only 2 other pax in cabin - 3A and 2F from memory.

Also have !F and 2F for the Ette and myself SYD-SIN-ZRH early June - again also a rdpt booking and to get 1F had to call up to secure.

I was in 3F when I flew new suites so didn’t see but at what point can the wall between rows 1 and 2 be lowered? Do you need to wait till after takeoff or can it be done straight away?
