SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Not exactly a year. Furthest it will look is 26 March but absolutely everything that day and in the lead up is waitlist only. Usually I’d manage to get a seat as soon as it opens up.

I searched SIN-ADL and SIN-SYD and it was wide open for saver every day leading up to 26 March.

Does anyone know what's the go with Star Alliance partner awards bookings on the SQ site at the moment?

I was looking at getting some flights for family members based in Spain. Previously, I was able to book AGP-SIN via IST, using SQ points and via the Singapore Airlines website.

However, trying the same search now (using Dec 2021 and Feb 2022 as test dates), I can view redemptions on the website for a second or so until it loads, then I get booted back to the homepage with an error saying the system can't find flights.

It sounds like something is broken, but is there a reason why Star Alliance partner rewards would be unbookable?

Have you confirmed the availability through another star alliance airline like United or Aeroplan? That will at least establish if the availability is real. Might have to call in if the problem doesn't resolve.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion.

Checking today, website still gives the error, but the SQ Android app shows full availability and it looks like it's bookable. I'll see how far it lets me proceed through the process (app was always terrible, but it looks like they might have made some progress on it while the world has been in lockdown.)

Looking to book a speculative mileage redemption returning from europe next June once it becomes available. Can anyone tell me whether NAP-LHR-SIN-SYD is going to be bookable? Wanting to go F so need to reposition to LHR but want it on the same itinerary to avoid APD. Realise that NAP-LHR will be on a partner and that I will have to ring to book.

Which *A airline flies directly between Italy and UK? I don't think there are any.

SQ don’t share QF optimism for flights from October. My F on a 777 just got cancelled as the aircraft was swapped to a A350. The A350 probably won’t even fly by then.

does anyone know how to interpret their expiring miles etc?

according to here
  • Extending KrisFlyer miles that will be expiring between January and June 2021 by six months.
  • Extending KrisFlyer miles that will be expiring between July 2021 and March 2022 [NEW]
does that mean any points expiring in Jan 2021, are extended to july 2021 and then [NEW}ly extended again?

Total miles expiringMiles previously extendedMiles eligible for extension
Jun 2021 156000 0 156000

this is what one of my lines looks like, thats just one of many so it looks like a gamb of snakes and ladders

Yeah, thats the way I read mine too.
I earned 10,000 with Air NZ as an SQ member, and also flew SQ's own plane, MEL - WLG.
Earnt in around 2018, so they would start to expire about Jul 2021, from my reading, I might have my extended once or more times.
But in the end, with the MEL - WLG flight now stopped, I am stuck, but you have enough points to get a VA flight, ie, to burn the points, short stints, I think is 11,000 ie, MEL - SYD or vv, if you want to use it, or maybe SYD - BNE.
They might extend the validity of points up to further in 2022, but who knows.
For you, I think it would be a good idea to use your points before they expire, if there is a hint that SQ will stop extending validity.

Don't forget that you don't have to have *travelled* before the points expire, you just have to have *booked*. So if you have no need to burn the points now you can afford to wait until they confirm there are no more extensions before making any decisions. Personally I reckon they'll keep extending things for a while longer.

I've got points that should have expired in *2019* that are still alive. Originally made a booking to the UK just before they would have expired in Aug 2019, for travel in June 2020. That was cancelled obviously with the points redeposited and validity extended. Last year we made a new speculative booking for August 2021, which is now obviously not going to be possible either. They're currently offering unlimited changes on bookings so have just been able to move this booking out to June 2022. I wasn't able to do this online -- when I called up it had to be escalated so that someone could calculate the cost difference (there was a small increase in taxes since the original booking). But they put the new dates on hold for me and called me back a couple of days later to complete the booking. I didn't have to pay the call centre charge as it couldn't be done online.

As I understand it you wouldn't normally be able to do that, because the ticket validity is one year out from when you *booked*, but they're currently allowing unlimited changes up to the end of September and one further complimentary change after that, with each change reissuing the ticket with a new validity period. That means I could potentially push this out to 2023 if the border doesn't open in 2022... https://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/...9-information-centre/complimentary-rebooking/

The SQ miles extension seems to be confusing however as I understand it miles will not be auto expired until at least Mar-Apr 22. I agree with what @MattA states above, I had booked around Oct 19 for travel in Sep 20 using miles that that were due to expire in Jan and Mar 20. The flights were canceled and the miles re deposited and have since been extended.

I will be making bookings later this year and then play the change game for as long as possible and then will play the paid extension card for a further 12 months. I personally put a high value on SQ miles and over the years have learnt how to work with SQ rules, the one thing I have come to understand is, they have rules and will often stick to the script. If you challenge the script SQ will often come back with something like "we can do this once" with a USD fee attached.

Extremely wishful thinking but it would be great if they adopted a "1 point per 12 months and your balance doesn't expire" like QF or VA.

I'd certainly buy stuff from KF Spree Exclusively if they did, but knowing SQ even if they Did adopt this policy, they'd can it under "enhancements" once international travel reopens anyway.

so would it be better to wait until they stop doing extensions and then book in advnace, or book now and take advantage of free changes?

im thinking waiting until expiry is the better option?

With the scarcity of A380s to book 1st award flights on - it is almost academic.

Has anybody seen anything from SIA about how much their Krisflyer points outstanding have grown by/to?

Good news today, the latest extension of 'expiring Krisflyer points'.

Taking a glass is half full view here.

Something that seems a little strange. That points currently due to expire in Sep 2021 are 'double extended' so they now go to Sep 2022 vs Oct 2021 expiring points only go tp April 2022.
