SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Recently did EWR - SIN in seat 10A. I purposely picked this seat because it is the only row 10 seat and I thought it might have some privacy which it did.

Although 10A is close to the forward galley, most of the time there is no activity in the galley. The main issue was the male flight attendants talking loudly. After what seemed hours of loud talking by someone from the coughpit I had to pull back the curtain and look at them meaningfully and they broke up. I got an apology and a pair of earplugs.

I found the 19 or so hours mostly in the dark somewhat trying. I did try to sleep a lot of the time with the headphones, the eye mask and the face mask.
I had travelled over to JFK in SQ suites and I found the difference between J and F quite considerable. I knew to save my pyjamas as there is no PJs in J. The flight looked pretty full.

I had originally booked to return JL F with five nights in Tokyo, but I had to change that when Japan closed its border.

The lounge in EWR is quite small and has a limited menu. They cook a smallish plate of scrambled eggs and bacon to order. I was one of the first in there and it was full by the time the flight boarded.

The EWR lounge looks like it has comfortable seating. That should be the starting point for a good lounge. Looking at pictures of the new lounges in SIN I’m not sure SQ got that memo,

Sadly, I was in SIN transit just before the new TPR opened.

Was the face mask wearing your choice or airline mandate? I flew MEL-DOH-EDI with QR last month in J and was only required to wear the mask when moving around the aircraft. Very much hoping for a similar experience next week from CDG-SIN-MEL in J.

We were told to wear them the whole time, except when eating and drinking obviously. I noticed the FAs pulled them down when they were up in the galley.

(Having returned from a trip in 2018 with a bad dose of flu and being very unwell for 2 weeks, I was and still am not keen to repeat that so Iam masked a lot of the time. And I had been flu vaxed).

100% SQ still maintaining face mask on board at all time for all pax and crew - clearly can be removed for eating and drinking - leads to a simple solution huh?

Exactly. All one need to do is make sure there is a glass of something next to them at all times and no one will say anything about face masks. Works on any airline, every time.

And a bag of chocolates for crew members to share will totally nail it for you 👍

Of course you will still be required to wear masks to toilets etc

And as I have posted in another thread day or so back we are currently in Europe and 3 intl flts on BA, LH and OS zero masks on Flight and Cabin Crew and >90% pax - SQ of course will be dictated to by Sing Govt and they were slow to even lift transit rules in SIN so might be a while yet before we see SQ mask mandate disappear

What's everyones thoughts on pricing for the transit hotel? Prices seem to have jumped massively from pre-covid.

Use to be ~$145 (double occupancy) for 7 hours in '19 but now it's $275 (double occupancy) for 7 hrs, nearly doubled. It's $560 for 24hrs which seems ridiculous. Crown Plaza is only about $300 or so for a full day.

I guess it depends on context. Transiting SIN, I try to build in a long enough overnight to make it worthwhile to get the MRT to somewhere interesting in the city, eat hawker food and sleep in a $100 room. But if I had a limited time for a connection where every hour spent getting to a bed was an hour less of sleep, then convenience starts to become worth paying for. And if you were having a $10,000 flight experience (whether paid in dollars or points) would you want to ruin it for want of a couple of hundred extra dollars for a full night's sleep?

Ahh no, only checked ambasador as flight is in and out of T3.

Just checked Aerotel and it's $247 for 2pax 7 hrs. Don't have old recipet for aerotel or Crowne so can't compare pre-covid pricing.

well it's midnight arrival with morning departure so definetly require hotel at the airport for max sleep time. Main difference would be having to do immigration out and in if booking Crowne, which seems like a hassle for a 8hr stopover.

I was in suites last week and the manager said that the crew would knock before opening the door to our suite so we had time to put on our masks. I took that as an implication that we didn't need to have a mask on when we are in the suite by ourselves.

I have switched for this Thursday night to the Yotelair Changi Singapore. This is my first time using it rather than my usual in the Crown Plaza, or the airside hotels.

It is on the small side but looks clean, with a comfortable bed. I am only really using it for us as a couple to overnight there.
It is also very easy to get to.

We have use of the room from 3pm (We land at about 3.30pm) Thursday till 1pm(we fly out at 12.35pm) Friday. After cashback it was only about $AUD125-ish.

We will have a nice sleep in and shower, and then have breakfast in the Krisflyer Lounge before our flight.
