SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

From what I have seen ALL Showrers in TPR, F and J Lounge identicalk design flaw - it is just staggering!
Sadly, it is a safety issue. If the ol' ticker has a wobbly and you fall against the door, help would have a hard time getting to you.

OK so 2 hours is not a great amount of time to properly experience TPR - my initial thoughts are quite disappointing - totally gone is that exclusive 'Club' feel that old TPR had which i loved - those deep plush high backed chairs that were so striking in appearance and comfortable to sit now a distant memory - as for the stark 'undressed dining tables' OMG all I can think is Coles Cafeteria compared to dining area in old TPR.

When I quizzed Lounge Staff they did tell me the lack of tablecloths has been raised continually by pax since opening - Management has made no decision on this as yet. I did have a couple of Lounge Staff Members who did know me from pre-Covid days so pleased they have retained their posions.

Overall my firat impression is that new TPR is quite sterile and certainly lackd character - time will tell if it grows on me.

I did take q quick waltz through new F Lounge and TBH it looks pretty good - it is an improvement on old F.

I would join the chorus of saying that is what I expected when I saw the photos. A rectangular room with some uncomfortable seating, a classy view of the terminal concourse, and a few dining tables serving pre-prepared food. All with the charm of a corridor running through the middle. Twice. Looking at the photos, the Business Class lounge looks like the pick of the bunch.

What SQ don't seem to get is that pax in lounges want comfort rather than 'luxury'.

I'm sure they are nicer, but are they so nice you'd actively try to spend more time in them than you needed to? I'm sure the eggs benedict and champagne are delicious if you like that sort of thing, and that will happily occupy ten minutes of your stay...
The posts between Dr Bob, CE, Boomy and yourself may have been inter mingled, I thought I was responding to to a comment about which SQ lounge was better, SYD or MEL. As I am based in ADL I will transfer via SYD over MEL any day of the week when travelling SQ. Also I do not eat eggs, I do like proper French Fizz and tend to spend the minimum time possible in any lounge.

Each to their own and YMMV. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to either SQ J lounge in MEL or SYD, but based on the F lounges in both ports IMHO there’s no way the extra 1:10 in the air and the extra 30mins and hassle of the transfer at SYD would be worth doing just to access a lounge with tarmac views vs being buried in a basement. Of course the actual timing of connecting flights may come into or too, In the F lounge I prefer the MEL catering anyway - but I guess maybe different in J.

Really? The equivalent lounges in MEL are just glorified waiting rooms - not a destination worth arriving early for. Are the ones in SYD really much different?
I really like the SYD KF lounge, mainly for the food (at breakfast, there are usually good Asian options like nasi lemak and dim sum) and of course the champagne - seems to taste nicer at breakfast time. Smaller and quieter than the NZ lounge.

Yes, but do you like the lounge enough that you have insufficient opportunity to enjoy it because you can only check in your luggage three hours ahead of departure? Or is 40 minutes probably a bit longer than you'd need to get a really good feel for the place?

I'd happily chill there for 1 to 1.5 hours, but that is just me. Plus half an hour browsing duty free, half an hour to get through security etc, so somewhere between T-2 and T-3 hours for check-in sounds about right.

Has anyone had experience pricing a mixed class redemption with the new award rates that kicked in this month?

I see it still says this on the new award chart from 5 July 2022 (emphasis bold):
"Singapore Airlines Suites and First Class are only available on selected Singapore Airlines
flights. Business Class seats will be allocated to members who redeem their miles for
Singapore Airlines Suites and/or First Class on Singapore Airlines flights which do not
have a Singapore Airlines Suites/First Class cabin. The number of miles required for the
entire trip may be determined at the redemption level of the highest class of service
flown.
Check the classes available on your flight before making a redemption."

Is it possible to book, for 2 people on the same PNR, both mixed class and mixed award type: Saver/Advantage?

I'm trying to get 2 F seats MEL-SIN but looks like they only release one saver, so would have to get one saver and one advantage.

I do not disagree with your thought process but everyone is different. Prior to Covid we lived in ADL and if needing to travel through SIN the ADL SQ departure time of around 9-10 am often resulted in coughpy connection times in SIN and this has not changed. From around 2010 we also maintained a house in MEL and have family in SYD so it was not unusual for family trips to go to either location a day or 2 earlier and then just fly out from there. If it was a work trip I could just work out of the MEL or SYD office for a day or 2 before the flight. Also the extra 1:10 hours in the air is not correct, the flight time MEL-ADL is around 60 minutes, the flight time ADL-SYD is around 1 hr 40 mins.

Yes an extra 40 minutes. Plus an extra 30 minutes on the Singapore sector (ex-SYD) makes 1:10.

I may be biased toward the MEL lounge {F in my case} because of catering that better suited my tastes (more non- seafood options in MEL … I generally dislike seafood and better desserts 😂). The windows neither here nor there for me.

I did a 777 First class run out of SIN -NRT-LAX and my son did A350 Business class SIN-LAX.
i prefer the stop and stretch in Narita. Now the A350 was running late so it landed just as most of the immigration officers depart so about 500 passengers were caught up in a queue that was almost not moving. Two and a half hours from landing to our apartment had me getting worried.
i did the Krug, caviar and icy vodka then had a 6 hour sleep on the way to LAX. I liked the lighter weight pajamas. My immigration time plus travel to the apartment was just 60 minutes in the early afternoon.
My sons new wife is coming early next week on the A350 so i hope she doesn’t get the immigration delay.
Half sized bottles of Krug make sense when there are only 4 seats in first class.
