SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Just booked J on an A380 with the following layout: SeatGuru Seat Map Singapore Airlines

I went for 94K to avoid the wing but as it's an overnight flight in winter it won't matter all that much. I'm curious whether the smaller cabin at the rear is worth the walk (!) so tell me, which row would you pick? (Bulkheads are all gone, so you can't pick those.)

Also, would you go A for the morning sunrise or K to avoid it? (Flying SIN-MEL)
The rear cabins on the 380 actually operate with a different crew and from the rear galley rather than the main forward galley where the majority of J seats are located. If anything, I find the service slightly faster and more personalised in the rear as it's a bit less of an assembly line.

I did wonder if there's a second galley but it doesn't look like this A380 layout has a second one, at least, not according to the linked map.

does anyone know if it is possible to claim the double bed seats on a redemption booking (Seats 11D & 11F or 91D & 91F)
SQ 221 • Airbus A380-800
?
I just mananged to secure row 96 on the A380 which is also double bed for a flight on 7th April
I do have an infant + 3 seats

For location of galleys and the like, I tend to find this source to be reasonably accurate …

Thanks! That's helpful (and made me go back and look at SQ's booking options which clearly shows the galley - I had just missed it when I looked earlier).

Ohh good tip - thank you! (And yep, there's the second gallery on their map.)
Just noticed that actually the Aeropa plan isn't the correct config. for my flight.

Clearly not having a good day for noticing things first time round 😵‍💫

I booked SQ212 SYD-SIN on J for June departure, departing at 7:55am.

I noticed that the first meal is simply “refreshments”, with only option “Fried Radish Cake in XO sauce”, or “Pulled Chicken in Cajun sauce and Swiss cheese in brioche”, and no BTC offered. Lunch is normal with BTC option.

Why doesn’t SQ offer full breakfast for first meal? Is this normal, or new way for SQ to cost cutting? I was hoping for BTC for my first meal. Fried radish cake is very cheap food. If they offered 2 proper meals on other SYD-SIN flights, why not SQ212?

It's been like this for quite a few years now out of Australia but your inference about cost is probably correct. Even in F/R on the afternoon flights out of SYD, the second meal is usually a choice of something like a sandwich or congee.

MEL is usually (slightly) better. I think on my last few flights it was either a penne bolognese or a nasi goreng.

Yeah they've reduced quite a few flights to one main meal I noticed. :(

is the strategy 1 F in saver then another in advantage? or you flying solo?

On this particular trip I’m flying solo. 1s and 1a is probably the smart choice when flying together but personally I’d rather get 2a and book suites all the way, otherwise J is fine.

Decent F Saver availability in Jan on the MEL/LHR route.
I’ve booked return flights and some dates are still open.

I've been flat out over the past few weeks and totally forgotten to check this, as I need flights for next Jan.

Still a few available but the dates I want are gone/Advantage only

I'm also hesitant on the 777 out of Melbourne from 29 October onwards when they will change to the NH Winter schedule.

The A380 will come off MEL and who knows what will be left :(

SQ 228 SHOULD stay as the 777 though.

The only F Saver these days in AUS is 207 Ex MEL and 208 to MEL. Onwards to Europe 306/318 to LHR and 305 Ex LHR.

We basically have no choice but to gamble on these flights and hope for the best. I can say from my limited experience once SQ downgrades to an aircraft with no F they can and will move pax to other 380/777 flights (although sometimes need to fight for it).

Not always. i met with total resistance when our March F saver disappeared when the A 350 substituted for the 777. Even when I found to F savers to CDG on the same day as our FRA flight they wouldn't budge.

Well yea it has to be on the same route. SQ don’t allow route changes once ticket has been issued.

For example, when my SIN-FRA 777 was downgraded to 350 I was moved to 380 on the same route. There was no award availability but there were seats left for sale. This was enough to create an extra award seat. Took a bit of arguing and HUACA but we got there eventually.

There were still seats left on the A380 when i lost my F savers to Fra but They wouldn't release them for me. Had several HUACA attempts but no dice.

Prior to COVID I had MEL-SIN-CPH booked in saver J and they cancelled the flight as they went from daily to 3 x weekly or maybe 5 x weekly and had me arriving 2 days later........

3 phone calls and I was changed into LHR on my original day, despite no award availability at all!

On an upcoming flight MEL-SIN-FRA which was in Saver and Suites F, I have been downgraded to the 777 for SIN-FRA, still in F... but was allowed to change to another MEL-SIN-FRA flight on any other day so moved it a day earlier, as it actually suited me better!

Much harder these days as we generally travel as a family of 4 and getting 2 award seats is hard but then adding on 2 other seats in F is close to impossible and/or goes into the higher fare bucket

Most recent trip we went in J and honestly, it wasn't the best trip with the regional A350's and A380

F is the solution sadly ........
