SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Lamb rack has now disappeared from BTC ex-SIN. Business has Roasted Lamb Chop with Herb Crust and no lamb at all in First.
Here is the roasted lamb chop with herb crust ex SIN.
Sadly I wasn’t hungry and only had a couple of bites of one chop. Very tender and full of flavor, no discernible herb crust though, just herbs spread over the chop.

I was suppose to have yesterday flying to CDG. It would have been an improvement on the regular menu. Somehow my BTC order was lost. I strongly suspect when I asked my corporate TA to requote for a change in the ticket, it was lost as well as the later meal Yakiniku beef.

I'm flying SQ SYD-SIN then have a 6 hour layover before flying to Seoul on SQ. Does anyone know which terminal's transit hotel I can/should book? Will I have access to T1 Aerotel which has a pool?

The Airport Hotels are fairly expensive. Try a search on "Day Use".
There are several hotels only a short distance from the terminal.
We recently had a few hours at the "Grand Copthorne " at half the price of the Crowne Plaza at the terminal. A bit of a cab ride but
Mrs Toff wanted to shop on the way.

TBH, 6 hours is right on the cusp of a hotel being worthwhile? 30 mins to deplane. And boarding starts an hour or so before departure. Gives around 4hrs maybe? A lounge might be a more convenient option.

Boarding closes 10 mins before departure. No need to be there an hour before. Really only need to be at gate 20 mins before.

Also have never taken 30 mins to deplane at SIN on SQ, even from the back of an A380 in economy.

lol. Exactly.

I was just trying to make out a case in case the OP was debating whether to buy a hotel, or not :D

As I am normally travelling HLO in economy, I'll be there when boarding starts.

I timed this once on arrival into SYD.

18 Minutes from seat belt sign off. (Fortunately as I've was in the last row, I was able to stand up and stretch in the area behind the seats while waiting.)

Im staying at the Aerotel @Changi tomorrow for 6 hrs of an 8 hour layover: 172 sgd for solo room, double and family rooms cost a bit more. Access to pool and a meal included.
Vs paying $0 and a lounge? I'd do it the other way...pay 172 sgd for the lounge since I'm paying for SQ to sponsor my journey (at least the transit portion)

lol. Exactly.

Best place to sleep is the chairs beside the Transfer Points after the passport scanning stations. You get the honour of experience what it is like being a safari animal as every passerby stares at you in awe.

I'd rather sleep sitting upright than pay over $100 for a privilege to stay at a YMCA which just so happens to be located in the airport.

You mean like in Crazy Rich Asians? That's not rich...that's crazy rich! Logisticwise buying the Crowne seems easier considering it is technically located outside the airport

No worries, enjoy sleeping upright while other pax get a good night sleep in a comfortable bed.

More like 8? And if you want me to shell out $100+ for a dorm "room" you'd better provide me with the full ensuite with a high level of cleanliness before I fall for it. Also seal the deal with free breakfast and complimentary drinks and you got yourself a deal (after I consider my second and third best options) 🤣 🤣

More like $110 AUD SGD considering how everything in Singapore is NETTED. I'll be doing that in the lounge and sipping my bubbly during my midnight bathroom breaks.

20D on 350 -> 1C on 777 - yep that works👍

2nd picture reminds me of Dracula lol. my last words..."the cup...it...full of...poison..."(sorry couldn't help it) 🤣 🤣

unforunately party of 5 J class only.

Will look into these thanks
5 is just enough to make a 🦓🦍🐘🦧🦣🦬🐪🦏🦘

If there were dedicated ‘loungers’ in SKL I haven’t seen them… the people I was talking about had just taken couches to go to sleep on :( Which was fine… the lounge had provided blankets and pillows for that purpose, but it wasn’t within any quiet zone… just the regular lounge!

If there is a sleeping zone, can understand the reluctance to set an audible alarm.
Ah I see you have discovered the refugee war-zone...welcome to the tribe

Somehow managed to find a J Reward seat through VA over the Easter long weekend and couldn't say no to that! This was my first ever experience of Singapore Airlines Business Class.

After some shopping at Jewel I made my way to the T3 SilverKris lounge. Not sure if my expectations were too high but to be honest I found it underwhelming. Food was mediocre, the two young guys behind the bar seemed to be on their first shift and were basically training one another whilst making a mess, all the drinks in the fridge were room temperature and lots of staff were coughing and sniffling behind their masks... hopefully not the experience others have!

Left the lounge early, or so I thought. When I reached the gate boarding had already commenced. Soon had a glass of Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve in hand but it was warm, a bit of a tragedy for such a nice champagne. Thankfully the experience improved from here!

My "Book The Cook" Lobster Thermidor (what else does one order on their first ever SQ J flight? ;)) was confirmed on the ground as was my initial drink choice of a Singapore Sling. The sling was fine but I much preferred the original I had at the Raffles Long Bar the day before, although admittedly this one doesn't come with Raffles' eye-watering AUD $53 price tag.

The Satay was delicious.

The appetiser was marinated smoked salmon with capers, doesn't look particularly impressive but it tasted great.

Got some garlic bread and cheese bread from the bread basket, I would say the cheese bread was the best.

And then the famous thermidor served with a glass of the 2019 Bodegas Lleiroso Crianza, which I was told was the first day they were serving this wine. The lobster was excellent and I really liked the wine as well.

After the mains the dessert trolley was brought around and I selected the fruit tart. "How about some cheese and fresh fruits as well?" Well since you offered... 😄 both were excellent.

A quick Courvoisier XO cognac before bed....

We were asked if we wanted to be woken up for the breakfast service at about 5.15am Sydney time, but I didn't sleep well and was up anyway. I chose the Balinese-style Bakmi Goreng dengan Satay Lilit and a vanilla bourbon TWG tea. The noodles were ok but nothing special and I was still full from dinner so just kind of pecked at it. The tea however was a winner.

Service from the crew was exceptional with special mention to Yuki who looked after my section of the cabin. Slippers, socks and eyemasks were at our seats as we boarded, with amenity kits from Penhaligons available on request. Bathrooms were kept clean throughout the flight. One peculiarity was a flight attendant who passed through the cabin and closed everyone's windows. I have no idea why they decided to do this, it's a red-eye flight and it was dark the whole way through, even when landing in Sydney!

All in all still a great flight and I would be keen to get back in J on SQ again, however I think I might retire from these short red-eye flights. I get nowhere near enough sleep on them and feel terrible the next day!
My flight attendant gave me the amenities kit voluntarily (after seeing me analysing the menu under the reading light while everyone else was asleep). Which was fantastic because I was originally going to request the earplugs and toothbrush cause I thought the amenities kit was the thing they put beside your seat when you first board (felt the original amenities kit was a little light but nothing out of the usual). I didn't get to book the cook or try their sling but instead opted for the bubblies 3 times as I don't know what else to order. TWG...you mean the collectible tea bag where you take from the hotel cause you paid for it even though you don't really drink tea and let it sit there in the corner of the room for years and years🤣 (but seriously the teabag is amasing)
And there was no SKL on my departing airport (CNS) just a white room with chairs (typical CNS) with no AC (broken that day) and some beef wraps and glass noodles and DIY drinks. However it was better than no lounge (as it was recently reopened). And it was a regional aircraft but did have full recliner beds so can't really tell the difference compared to the normal SQ J experience. Didn't utilise book the cook option so settled for the second best (roast beef with potatoes as opposed to lamb?) although lamb does seem to be their signature dish.
On return tried the SKL and was a little bit above the *A Gold lounge with the difference being more meat options (and having the "privilege" for paying for the attached bathroom in J vs having to walk outside into the airport to use the toilet and brush your teeth in the dreaded public bathrooms for *A Gold):eek: Also forgot to try the sling and settled for orange juice and soft drink instead. laksa never disappoints though it's only 6.5 at Toastbox or other local stores (shocked at how food can be so cheap given it is a FINE city considering the things at the FairPrice supermarkets cost the same as in Aus). and hargow good too. oh they also have the steamed chicken thingy (commonly served with rice) that singapore is known for which is a plus.
And lastly...I don't visit the SKL, but when I do, I make sure I have a 4+ hour transit (cause in reality you're paying them for the inconvenience of having to transfer in Singapore/way longer flight time than direct better make the best use of it lol)...

Interestingly enough I requested a kit after dinner but the FA forgot and I fell asleep for a bit anyway. After breakfast service I just asked if she'd had any luck finding one, she was aghast at having forgotten and insisted I take a second kit as well to give away to someone. Good service recovery and the gift was well received!

Read my original post again I rewrote the whole section (even between the sentences cos too much reflections lol)
You beat me to the century old question about how to request two amenities kit without looking cheap (to which I have never figured out the answer to). Closest alternative is to change seats and ask for an amenities kit or ask for it when another staff passes by but too lazy to do that.
Too bad they didn't serve pyjamas (another *A airline has a pyjamas made by a famous designer J.W.) and has lobster on demand don't need to book the cook at all (after all the cook needs some rest 🤣 🤣)
The not-so-good about SQ is their hefty no show fee if youre late (I had the pleasure for donating $400 for being 2-3 mins late to checkin for reasons outside of my control I'm sure their investors and privileged passengers appreciate it to this day). Which is why when traveling with *A i always stop by the SQ lounge for a "visit" no matter what lounge I am assigned and don't mind stopping over at the Changi SKL for a few extra hours when I do decide to do "business" (more often do "economy") with them🤣🤣

What's the easiest way to cancel and redeposit miles for a KrisFlyer award now? Can it be done wholly online?

I have a better option that just cleared the waitlist and I'd rather use the miles from cancelling my backup booking than transfer more into KrisFlyer.

Well, in the good old days, you could just call up and they would cancel/redeposit and rebook the waitlisted flight all in one fowl swoop.

Are you comfortable that the points you are going to refund have not expired?

Yes, they're less than a year old. I just don't want to put any more into KrisFlyer without a specific purpose, because of the hard lifespan.

Actually, it turned out I could choose to change the existing booking, select an identical routing to the waitlisted one, and just pay the change fee rather than the higher cancel fee and waiting for the miles to be redeposited. And I could do all that in the app without having to call the call centre, which (at least last time I called them) was much worse since COVID. Then I cancelled the waitlisted one, which was free because it never actually ticketed.

So I'm calling this a win.

I might not be looking in the right place, but the lack of an obvious link to save a booking in MMB to a calendar is an undergraduate oversight.

I'm looking at booking a one way itinerary, and as always look to book at the time of release of award seats for that particular date. It's the only way I've managed to get my redemptions thus far (just my bad luck not being able to get them otherwise. Could be the time of travel, route etc).

The one I'm interested in at the moment seems to load into the system immediately as Waitlist (and this is just for 2 × J tix). Either they're being loaded as waitlist or I'm being beaten to the prize by professionals in the second between availability being loaded in to the system and myself performing the search for that itinerary on that date at the exact time of release.

Has anyone here faced this issue, and found a way around it, apart from waitlisting and praying to the SQ yield management gods for it to clear?

This is the first time I've experienced this issue, out of all the SQ redemptions I've done (I only make VA and SQ redemptions, at a ratio of ~1:10 so thought I had a good grip of the lay of the land when it comes to these things - apparently not)!

Thanks in advance for all insights/tips/etc.
