QF009, I've never done a matress run, but I confess I do like the extra attention you receive as an SPG Platinum. And as I mentioned before (and knowing that you are staying there next year), that suite on the top floor of LM Barcelona is truly amazing. You would surely agree!! Will you be plat by the time you hit Bareclona?

We stayed in all SPG properties on our RTW last year - 14 consecutive stays, 58 nights over an 8 and a half week period. Interestingly, I was upgraded early to both Gold (around 18 nights) and Platinum (around 38 nights). I don't know if there is a hidden upgrade pathway on the basis of conscutive stays / nights - you may be able to help answer that!

I'd be Plat before the RTW starts (way before BCN) - so w00tage! :D

Can't answer ur question because I've never had that many consecutive stays before. :(

Only thing is I made the reservations as a Gold - so I might have to ring up each of the properties to refresh my status to Plat when i do attain Plat? I might hint at a top floor suite with the LM BCN while doing so...;)

From my experience, the change in status is automatically updated for each of your bookings. Indeed, I learnt of both my status increases at check-in - not too shabby a surpise!

Not bad. Must have recognised I had dropped to base level after being Gold for many years. Now, to organise a stay during the registration period.

So it looks like there are multiple offers - pity, I liked the look of the double promo that superchris posted.

As a gold member, they offered me:

As a Gold Preferred Guest® member, you can choose one
of the following options for stays between December 1, 2007,
and February 29, 2008:

Earn up to 16,000 bonus Starpoints®. With every three eligible stays, you'll earn 4,000 bonus Starpoints (up to 12 stays and 16,000 total bonus Starpoints).

Earn double stays. For example, if you stay three times, you'll receive credit for six stays toward retaining elite-level status (Gold status typically requires 10 stays or 25 nights within a calendar year; Platinum 25 stays or 50 nights).

Earn double Starpoints on all your stays. That's five Starpoints for every eligible U.S. dollar spent.

Remember, unlike other programs, Starwood Preferred Guest allows you to redeem Starpoints for Free Night Awards without blackout dates. If there's a standard room available, it's yours.

Now, which one to choose? Do award stays (Cash & Points) count towards the 3 eligible stay count?

Lindsay,

mmm.....Marketing.

Let's be honest here, giant hotel chains or airlines don't care about loyal customers. They care about bringing in the maximum profit. While many of us, especially Platinum members, deserve some sort of recognition or benefits from loyal preferred guest programs, "status" is merely an illusion that we create to make ourselves feel superior than others.

While on the surface, preferred guest programs may look like a reward for customers, they are truthfully just another way of alluring "money payers" to come back.

Promotions are created by a team of highly successful marketers and many of which have received business degrees from top notch universities. They know how to generate revenue.

Think about it from Starwood's perspective. Why would they want to target platinum members when they know for a fact that these loyal customers are already going to bring in the $cash$ consistently? They want to attract the general, gold members or non-members and give them small extras (double stays, points etc) that cost starwood essentially nothing to suck them into becoming revenue generating suckers, I mean platinum members :D

While it is important that starwood keeps their loyal customers, it is also critical to attract new ones. When an individual achieves the platinum level, he/she is undoubtedly familiar with the company and trust/value the products that they deliver. Like myself, for instance, even if I did not receive the platinum benefits that starwood provided, I would still do business with them because I LOVE W hotels and the products in which they deliver. The bonus benefits are nice, but not a major influence on my decision in choosing a hotel. That's when they transform marketing into operations (Welcome amenities, upgrades etc).

Whilst that may be true, it's great to see segregated offerings to each level, rather than a blanket approach. This looks like they have done a lot mote research to understand what might make each level of member aspire to the next level (with the obvious exception of Platinum). However, it's good to see that they haven't forgotten about their top tier members, as some programs are good at offering promo's to base and mid level but ignore the upper eschelon (who in fact, give the greatest level of profit to the Chain). Remember that not everyone is as savvy as us...

Not a big deal for me ... ;)

I got the following as a Gold:

Same promo as Q4 2007 essentially.

Went for double Starpoints this time as I've got Plat sewn up for this year and next year (qual Dec 9 2007, requal hopefully Sept 2008). Thanks SPG! :D

Same here.

The next few quarterly offers will be interesting from my point of view, as I see no way of maintaining platinum in 2009 without a little bit of help from Starwood.

Thanks Superchris!

I've used 2 x double stay promos this year to get to Gold...but with 12 stays to Plat and only 2 short upcoming stays, getting any further is unlikely (status is based on calendar years, right?) If it was double nights (like a previous promo I used), I might've gotten close.

Hmmm...the 4,000pt bonus is tempting, but too risky. Double Starpoints it is then.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Yes status is based on calendar year.

I reckon you also get double nights if you choose the double stay promo. I signed up for 'double stays' for Q4 2007 and my nights doubled along with my stays. I'm not sure if the terms of this promo will be identical to the last one, but you can PM Starwood Lurker aka William Sanders on FT to clarify.

edited to add - Yes double stays also = double nights:

QF009.
Interesting
as a Gold I got the 16,000 pts offer instead.

Seems to be random as some Plats also got 16k rather than 24k

Have already posted the double nights query on FT (as moa999)

I think they made a mistake and sent me the wrong promos - why does it say 'keeping' instead of 'qualifying' for Platinum status?

Ah well, doesn't matter I guess as I went for double points.

HI guys new member to the wood family..just wanted to find out is it possible to buy your gold status with spg..

You're not supposed to be able to buy it. However, you can status match from another program, or buy timeshares to get it.

Some companies get vouchers/codes to gift gold. Occassionally people sell these on eBay for US$20-$60.

If i made a reservations & provided my details etc and if i dont check in yet they debit my card for the 1st night booking........ would I still be credited with the 2 stay? (as being on a double stay promotion) and spg point?

maybe i should be asking this on another thread? sorry mods if this is the case or may remove at ur discretion.
