Strategy to obtain US Amex

Now they are asking for SSN. Starting to wonder if how we applied is the correct GT method. We logged into her AMEX AU account, changed country to USA, searched for the Green card and applied...
SSN is not part of the GT application process.

Did you follow this: My Account>Moving abroad? Transfer your card>Where did you move to?>United States>Apply for your new Card online

We tried this method and I actually posted about it in here the other day. The page wouldnt load to apply online and someone in here said to login into to the AMEX AU account, change country to USA, searched for the Green card and apply. thats what we did... sounds like its not he correct method?

In My Account, do not click on ‘Change Country’. That’s wrong information that you received from ‘someone’

If the page doesn’t load, keep trying, later. Also, try using different browsers and other devices if needed. It can be a bit buggy. Eventually, it will load (patience, Grasshopper)

Note: <Redacted my comment about ‘Change Country’ as an AFFer has since confirmed that this method works, so not sure how your application, using ‘Change Country’, fell over>

I would just start over again, from scratch.

‘Change Country” is a big “No, No”. It’s all done on the Oz website, not the US site.

OK thanks shoukd we call them to formally withdraw that application?

This is what you need to see:

“Apply for your new card online”

Maybe, or just let it lapse. I have never been in that situation. Maybe ‘someone’ else can post about a similar experience

In any case, your next card application (by GT) will be handled by the GT team (rather than by a ‘general CSO’ when applying through the US website)

Is it ok to 'Apply for your new Card by phone'?

You can apply by phone. However, I stick to on-line as I feel more in ‘control’ of the application process. I fill in all the details (which includes the US address) and wait for the response.

Should you phone, make sure that the CSO understands that this application is by GT. If they mention SSN then you are speaking with the wrong person.

I've gone through the change your country option. When you apply for the card you should receive the following screen:

Once you click yes, it will populate with your Australian account information. This was how I applied for my first GT.

Your application screen will have the following at the top:

FWIW, I tried the following steps on Amex's GT website and they don't work and the links don't come up:
  1. Select your preferred card from our Personal Card or Business Card page.
  2. Click to apply online for your chosen card.
  3. Please acknowledge that you are an existing Card Member by clicking on the relevant ‘I’m already a Card Member’ link or ‘Go to Shorter Application’ button at the top of the application form to continue.
  4. Complete the application with your existing Account number, new U.S. home address and home telephone number.

I already have a Bonvoy Bevy card since a couple months back. I was thinking of applying for one of the Business Cards. How does one do that? There does not seem to be an option for the global transfer one. It asks for SSN, business name, federal tax ID..

Yeah this is what we seen and we clicked yes. I also note that you are correct. I have tried probably 10-20 times to go through the method that @DC3 describes and the personal cards page will not load.

I think I will get my wife to call again and find out if the application is a GT one..

Does anyone know this? Do you just call them? If so, what do you say?

For anyone with a US Amex, Qantas have an offer of spend $1250 get $250 back. Remember these figures are $USD not $AUD.

Thanks to my US cards, I so rarely book expensive cash fares these days that I can't see a plausible use for it. The irony!

Yes I got it too. I recently found a browser plugin that accepts all the offers for me automatically.

On another thought, I see more and more people on FB talking about how to get US amex cards. Anyone worried that amex will catch on and ban all our accounts?

Far more Canadians have been doing it for far longer than most people in Australia, so no.

But I have come to the view that there's little benefit in spelling it out to newbies who aren't prepared to do the work themselves. There's more than enough information already in this thread if you're willing to read it from start to finish, which is what I did over the course of a month before I even considered starting.
