Strategy to obtain US Amex

Well, not exactly everyone else. I’ve posted upthread (Post 493, on 4th Feb) about my experience in obtaining the Aspire card. I mentioned that I used the term Apt, rather than Ste, and had no issues with the card going astray at MyUS. Amex used the full address, including ‘Apt xx_x-xx_’. Perhaps a coincidence, but it worked for me.

Interestingly, no-one else has posted that they have tried this method. Anyway, Ste does not seem to work with Amex.

i read your post and followed it. Didnt work for me

I think the address issue is random, my aspire card arrived fine with the correct suite address, but then when my colleague applied he did the exact same thing as me (I was helping him on his computer), yet Amex dropped off the Suite number and he had to talk with a myUS rep to find the card.

... despite putting my suite number twice ...

OK. Thanks. Worth trying anyway.

Seems to be hit and miss.

Edit: Maybe I took your post literally, about your suite number, when you had actually used ‘Apt’ in your application. Anyway, very frustrating with the Amex inconsistency

Thanks for the data point as the Aspire will be my next card, the reason I mentioned it was I helped my work colleague get the Aspire and his was sent in a standard letter format but used a Hawaiian address.

I used Amex Chat at one stage and was informed that they always send the Aspire card by courier (tracking) never by standard (i.e., USPS) mail.

It worked in my case, as I could view the tracking progress from Omaha to the MyUS address (delivery within 48 hours). In the case of a Hawaii address, you would have thought that the same would apply. Strange?

How are you guys paying for yiur spending? once you get the card. Xe the best way?

xe is working fine for me. I just add an extra $US20.00 for the intermediary bank. Others have posted similar, upthread (although there’s one post where there was no charge by the intermediary bank for a payment?).

Edit: I’ve made two payments and each has been acknowledged by an Amex alert in just over 12 hours from xe forwarding.

After receiving the card, has anyone changed their phone number and address to Australia?
any issues doing this?

Can`t change address to non- US address online. Don`t think you can change phone number.

Somehow sometimes the US address appears to remain on file for some departments.

this is going to be a problem when i get free weekend night cert
Not sure why it would be a problem. Notification will be by email, not by post. It should also show in your account. Then, redeemed by phoning to book.

Weekend night will be delivered by email directly by h honors. amex have no input in it.
How long has it taken most to receive their weekend code?

you can always call amex and update your address.

I was approved July 10, 2018 and got my first one Sep 10, 2018 and last year on Oct 1, 2019.

As this article explains you should receive your free weekend certificate 63 days after approval. It was pretty accurate as I got mine exactly 63 days after my approval.
I thought they mail the cert?
nope, you'll get notified via email when your free certificate becomes available. Then you just gotta call the hilton booking line, give them your member number and they should be able to see your free night.

It is good for standard rooms only, I am unsure if complimentary upgrades are possible whilst using the free night. The one time I used it was at the DoubleTree in Melbourne, but didn't get upgraded then. Then again Australia is pretty stingy with upgrades, e.g. Hilton Darwin, Sydney, Adelaide, Gold Coast and Cairns were unsuccessful for upgrades.

FT, although US-centric, can be a useful source of information.

Anyone got recommendations on where's the best place to use the weekend night certificate and $250 resort credit (not necessarily in the same property) for Aussies? Most of the recommendations on flyertalk are in North America, which is a bit far from Australia!

Last time that I checked the Resort list, there’s only one in Oz. Do you mean in Oz? Hint: Do you like the Gold Coast? 😀

Edit: The Resort list (can be sorted by regions, e.g. Asia Pacific):

My bad, I meant any good resorts that's easy to get to for Australians, of course that includes the Gold Coast property, but anything in Asia Pacific would be easy for us compared to flying to North America!
