Strategy to obtain US Amex

Clear Signup offer - US$75 Uber voucher is back. Code - VDAY25
Just signed up using my ABP.
Will report when I get the Voucher. Have Clear credit on Aspire too but will hold back for now.

For last promo in Sep, After Amex gave me $199 Clear credit, I cancelled and then Clear issued $124 refund. Expected a clawback but nothing until now. Fingers crossed 😁 It was weird actually. Clear charged me $124 first then did 2x $124 refunds.

Probably just to confirm that it was you who applied. Be prepared for text verification while you are on the phone call.

So I had to wait til midnight Sydney time to call them (8 am Eastern time)...got through and the agent said he couldn't see an issue with the application but he needed the Global Transfer team to push it through but they only opened an hour later...called back at 1am Sydney time and whilst I was on hold, the Global team approved it with a ridiculously high credit limit (I guess I can reduce it later). The only Qs I got asked were my year of birth, and to confirm my US address (relative's) and to confirm the spelling of my name.

Despite opening an US HSBC Premium account, and waiting a month to get a statement with my US address on it, I never got asked to provide evidence of a US address or for that matter my US phone number (only created a few hours ago) so just a FYI...

Q is do I keep my HSBC acct open? I can always use my Amex statement with US address I guess if I ever apply for another card. ;)

I want to thank the many posters here who have given advice on this thread as I would have had no idea how to get a US Amex credit card!

Definitely keep it. Free, easy way to verify your US address.
With HSBC likely about to exit the Aus market, it’s good you got in while you could

Hoping for some P2 related advice here…

I referred my wife for an Aus Plat around 6 months ago while there was a 275k referral.

I don’t want to pay almost $3k in annual fees for 2 platinums, but now have a fair chunk of Amex MR ‘stranded’ in her account.

I had originally planned for her to GT into the fee free US Amex, then move her points to an airline with family pooling.

A few months ago Amex removed the fee free MR card for new applications.

She has no ITIN at this point.

Is the easiest option to suck up the $150usd af for a Green for one year for her ?

Is it possible to do your first GT into a business card ? (I think there is a fee free MR card there)

If you don't mind my asking, if you expected Amex to claw back the credit, and expected Clear to claw back the uber credit (even though they evidently stuffed up the refund and gave you free money) what was the point of signing up?

I think the 150USD green card is the easiest choice. Paying an AF is part of the games and is the cost for entry. Green card gives 40k points + 3x back on a range of stuff so it is not horrendous. It sounds like you want to avoid AF which is fair, but if you get like a 100k gold offer, you will end up with approx 300k US MR points after transferring the plat points across, which can be worth a lot of travel if that is your goal.

Can you do for multiple cards eg green, platinum, business gold
People have used this offer on every card that has a Clear rebate. You do need a separate Uber account for each voucher.
The terms and conditions say there is a uber voucher fee equivalent to the voucher in the first place. Is this also not enforced?
As with everything in the US, you try and see what happens — there's no loss if everything is clawed back. But there's a reason this offer has been very popular in its previous iterations.
