Sydney Airport- A National Disgrace

Where would the new MGWAirport be?
AValon being upgraded to become the 2nd **(major)** international airport for MEL and Vic?

Avalon already has international capability, but whilst it is a great airport for serving Geelong, not so great for the majority of MEL, as there is only a relatively small population that is closer to AVV than to MEL (even in the rapidly growing western suburbs, the geography relative to MEL is not great). There are proposals for an airport located near Koo Wee Rup to the SE of Melbourne which would serve the SE and Gippsland, but it's quite some time away.

T5 is already at capacity, overflowing in fact. Lounges? Not a single seat available and the business lounges there are huge.
I recently had this experience in the Galleries lounges on a Saturday afternoon, had heaps of time so walked over to the B gates and the satellite lounge there was positively serene. And great food as well, I pigged out big time.

You can use this website to check how busy each lounge is.

They might go north west, Seymour/Sale is in the hills, ie, not flat, and also, its in an area that some might consider enviromentally sacorsanct and not be touched or besmirthed by an airport.
I would say, Bendigo/Maryborough/Euchuca/Rochester...
Following the "train" of thought of the North West idea they used for Sydney.
Also, Euchuca & Bendigo are both on a rough NorthSouth line across from Tulla.

Revision:

Step 1: Move in next to existing airport

Step 2: Complain about existence of airport

Step 3: Get expensive sound-proofing installed at taxpayers expense

Step 4: Profit

Not for new builds. There was a program years ago to insulate some houses that would be affected by "excessive" noise as the airport grew. I think it was funded, like these things tend to be, by users of the airport. Many were also taxpayers too no doubt.

I prepare noise assessments for new builds in the vicinity of airports including SYD. All the Councils have provisions in planning regulations that require compliance with AS2021 with the controls incorporated into the design, the cost of which is met by the owner. In the industry, the newcomers are known as the "agent of change" and, quite rightly, are responsible for insulating dwellings accordingly.

But @Himeno and your main point is correct and all too common. I also do assessments in areas where live music venues are a terrific attraction, only to then face closure, even after spending fortunes on building upgrades, when the attracted actually move in and start complaining.

Seeing as this is the SYD thread, thought I’d chime in again about the raging commonsense of just building a pedestrian tunnel between the international and domestic precincts. 1Km is not a long walk in modern airport terms (BKK, IST, HKG) and you could even put some travellators in if wanted.
Relatively small tunnel under the runway shouldn’t be prohibitively expensive.
Saves some Tbus wear and tear and fossil fuels and helps people get closer to 10000 steps a day! 😁

Going underground is always vastly more expensive than the other options...

They would deem it a security risk, so it would be a no go.
Unlike WLG, which has a pedestrian tunnel under the runway, I did walk it once, about 2 years ago, it wasn't too deep.
But in 2023, they would probably deny any approval to build it.
The T2/T3 SYD train tunnel is only rail transport, so its probably why it got approved, plus there was money to be made.
But as for a pedestrian tunnel from T1 to T2/T3, it would be denied, ... its like that boats are not allowed past a certain point towards the fence line at the perimeter of SYD airport.

It would also be deemed too expensive, if the "walkway" was inside of int sec screening, too.

I'm not sure if that's the case. There's a major roadway (General Holmes Drive) going right underneath the main runway already. I'd guess that's a bigger risk than a pedestrian tunnel.

Cost would be a bigger factor.

No, not a tunnel.
Its a "long" walk from the T1 dom sec zone, out into the public area, (via upstairs/downstairs (dep/arr), past T2 & T3 and then T4).

General Holmes Dr is cars.
But pedestrian wise, too much of a risk.
I remember years ago, MEL airport used to have that open deck area, via the set of staircase, it was a nice area, to see airport ops without a car.
Then they closed it off "due to development works" for a while, then they closed it off permanently.
PER airport has an open area, but its not open to the runway.
SYD I believe years ago, also had an open area on the top of the terminal, to view the runway, etc, but also that one got closed off.
Here in Aust, they don't let you near an aircraft, unless you have a need to, AVID/ASIC to work, or after going through dom/int sec screening if having a need to fly a service.
At least we are not as "bad" as the US, where you need a BP to get past dom sec screening, and have to contend with the TSA.
Not to mention photo id with the * on them, the state driving licence, that is.

I’m not sure that pedestrians in a tunnel are a bigger risk than cars and trucks in a tunnel. Anything a pedestrian can carry can be carried in a car as well. And some.
It’d probably be cheaper to have a sideways-lift travelling around the perimeter than to tunnel under the runway … which likely violates whatever agreement was signed with Macquarie Bank when the airport rail line was funded.
