Taken For Granted - Items/Food You Can't Get In the USA

I find when your in the US and buying drugs (that's pharmaceuticals people!) it's easier to use the actual drug name (ibuprofen, paracetamol, etc)
Interestingly in the US (and various other countries) paracetamol is known as acetaminophen - two different abbreviations of a much longer chemical name. So I suppose that could lead to additional confusion when trying to ask for panadol.

I am a little concerned about some people's diets judging by this thread!!! Everything in moderation folks.

Coffee for me would be number one....Starbucks et al have truly coughised the coffee experience over there so very hard to get a decent cuppa. I find Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf a little better provided you ask for a) single origin b) 1% milk and c) 60c milk :)

American bacon is typically smoke cured or dry cured. The Australian variety is plan pork. As well you will almost never see a rind on bacon in the USA. I still find that the Australian pork is too "watery". But better than doing without. ;)

My recent grocery experience in the USA is Austin TX - so YMMV. And Austin tends to be a bit "yuppie".

Cheese is improving in the USA. You need to get to a reasonable super market however. But I have noted that they have one program that I hope not to see in Australia. The grocery rewards card in the USA is tied to almost all the discount specials. No card = pay more. I did note that the bakery sections in the USA are much less expensive and they know how to make bagels.

Beer and wine sections of the grocery would normally have selections which make our local bottle shops envious. OTOH the major US beer brands are yellow colored water (with alcohol).:( Again YMMV. Though the selection of Oz wines is pathetic in most US shops. Though occasionally you will find the "better" Penfolds varieties for less than Australian local prices.

Just my two cents while wandering

Oh yes. The only advantage with coffee while traveling in the US, is that away from the airports, the second cup of brown water is normally "free" with breakfast.

Lol, the truly sad part of what passes for American Coffee is that they seem to need to drink it in such large quantities too.

Lamb! Unless you go to a Greek restaurant, very difficult to come across.

Also from when I lived there...

Meat Pies
Redskins
normal non sugary bread
Arnotts biscuits (not bleeping cookies!)
Dim Sims
Golden syrup
Takeaway Fish 'n Chips
small sized servings of anything

My friend managed to buy a pack of lamb cutlets (technically 3 packets) relatively easily, so it is there, although a decent mint jelly on the other hand...

Unless I am going to the UK; either in the US or Europe(Amsterdam) where I am now I can't seem to get a good cup of tea. I usually take a supply of tea bags but I forgot to bring a stash of them with me on this trip.

My trips are usually short so I can usually go without most food types but hard to start the day without a good cup of tea.

Wholefoods on 7th by any chance? They always have a great selection of cut fresh fruit, as well as the hot food selections that allow you to eat in store. Interesting to see woollies start to try it with their fresh sushi stations etc.

weird one is a mate from ATX who lived in oz for 6 months and now misses masterfoods BBQ sauce, and perhaps not so unusual, bundaberg ginger beer.

No. Actually about 25km out of downtown. Still haven't found a grocery in Oz that will compare with the superstore mentality of the USA. The 24 hour trading is still unknown in WA. But that is more a larger population and 24 hour workforce environment I think.

Requested so far:- Tim Tams (regular & double coated), Caramelo Koalas, Clinkers, Strawberries & Creams (Allens), Shapes (BBQ, Cheddar & Savoury) and, "for the love of God, spray deodorant, PLEASE".

I managed to get all of the above items and a few extras, but a word of caution if any of you are Pascall Clinker lovers - Woolies & Coles don't stock them anymore.

It was a long and stressful search, but I finally found them in an IGA.

Don't know who's to blame for this, but it's a bad move.

I've heard that Clinkers are going the way of the Polly Waffle and the dodo.

According to the Pascall FB page, Snifters have gone too (I have no idea what they are, but there's a lot of people not happy about that as well).

Actually I can relate to that one, the last time I was in Europe, I would have loved some of the masterfood sauces like BBQ, Dijon and even old regular Tomato.

Another chip flavour I love that you usually can't find OS is cheese and onion.
