Tale of 2 brekkies [or Qantas "Cafe" Breakfast Sucks!]

I can't speak for F (my first QF F flights are actually in a few months time), but I've experienced it in J and PE. I've never flown Y in anything long enough to sleep in.

I know there's the mask but I can't sleep with it on. I usually just put the blanket over my head and go back to sleep regardless of how silly I may look

Don't you fly VA now anyway, Ewing? ;)

Why I switched from Qantas to Virgin Australia - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

I am thinking any prior research done on this was to obtain the result the bean counters were after.

Well I'll chime in again and say i'm pleased at least the feedback is being heard and adjustments made (it would appear). I've been a vocal critic of this abbreviated breakfast.

Part of the issue seems to be the amount of time (and noise created) in getting the cabin ready for landing which impacts on when the "meal" is served.

But if a full breakfast can be served on a domestic 1hr leg, then it's not too hard to serve ~ 1hr out from landing on a medium haul.

Maybe they can work on the 3 hours it takes them to do a dinner service! That would give us some more sleep time too.

I was reading some trip reports on QF F, LHR-DXB and it seems that on that short leg, only a cafe breakfast is served! Same for the overnight BA F SIN-SYD (but that is detracting from this thread).

That is correct but with a flying time just under 7 hours it's quite ok not to have a hot choice for breakfast IMHO.
The cafe breakfast in F is identical to the normal breakfast option with the exception of the hot food selection.

That is what it sounds like to me - there was a fair bit of waffle in the article about how much wastage there was with people only "picking" at their breakfast. Now that resonates with me as I grew up in Africa and I was brought up never to waste. However I think Qantas lost sight of the fact that people have paid quite decent sums of money for their J flights and it is their choice.

could be even worse than that... a question:

would you like to maximise your rest and be woken as late as possible for a light breakfast?'

will probably give and airline the result they need to cut hot meal options.

had they phrased the question

'are you willing to forego all hot and substantial breakfast choices if you are awake and want to eat but some other passengers want to keep sleeping?'

the answer will likely be different

Well said! The questions in questionnaires are all too often designed to give the answers the owner of said questionnaire wants to hear in order to validate a decision that has already been made.

indeed, the time in the air is closer to 6 hours than 7, its a short sector really and there is simply no need for 2 full meals. You would never stop eating otherwise

I would think that in international F, a hot option should be offered regardless - just because it is F. I know that this isn't the point of the thread (cafe breakfast in medium haul J), but the other way in QF J (DXB-LHR) it does have a hot breakfast option...
I'm not sure but does DXB-LHR in QF F have a hot breakfast option?

Yes it does

Yes because that is the main meal on the flight, most people don't eat dinner at 2am, they go to sleep right after takeoff and wake up to a full breakfast.

I never sleep well on flights (but l'm sure others do), so 'having an option' for a decent breakfast to give me energy to function the next day is a big thing for me.
For those that cherish sleep and don't want to eat a substantial meal, QF 'Cafe-de-Breakfast' is probably just right for you. But to not give the 'option' of something more/bigger is a cop out.

Cutting costs and serving a croissant, piece of fruit and coffee for a ~$3k (SIN-SYD J) flight is taking the piss.

I'm glad that QF have come to their senses...

I have a general aversion to eggs served on planes for some reason - I quite like the Cinnamon Scroll, but I do feel hungry soon after landing. My suggestion:

1. Offer the option of some of the dinner meals being held over - e.g. on HKG-SYD I've often thought it would be nice to have the wontons for breakfast as well as the danish. Since many would load up on food in the lounge why not let people choose to have a 'late' dinner and sleep as soon as it takes off?

Or build arrivals lounges at SYD and MEL for the international terminals! You could then charge other airlines for access too.

This !!! :)
Plus a million, I've never understood why we expect international premium travellers to rely upon an early check-in at the CBD hotel.
As both BA and AA have them at LHR with similar OMG o'clock arrivals there is an opportunity for QF to truly enhance their product and perhaps increase their share of the premium market.
