Tale of 2 brekkies [or Qantas "Cafe" Breakfast Sucks!]

Breakfast in PE from NRT-SYD this week was juice, fresh fruit and 2 x greasy pastries (I think the sweet pretzel pastry was overheated and so was really chewy).
The fruit was quite good and that was it!

You were also in Japan this week? ;)

I prefer to look at this as the whole service. Haven't been on here since Christmas due to much travelling outside of wifi zones but let me say this: of all the flights in J I've done in the last three months then my QF Australia - Asia - return flights were the best on the itinerary. As we are talking about "cafe" breakfast then I shall limit my views as such. Twice I returned to Australia on QF through HKG and the main meal can be substantial if you want it to be. I always order two small plates and then a large; always got my choice (lucky, maybe). QF has really upped the game in J over the last 18 months or so with plated meals to your seat, unlike CX with its Y class ceramic dishes. My point is, I always leave SE Asia going home with a full meal in the lounge (nice to be able to do this in the Wing F in HKG admittedly), but do you really need eggs benedict, bacon, roasted tomatoes and everything else coming back into Aus? I think I would have exploded every time if that was the case. I appreciate that people prefer to eat at different times and that this opinion is my own YMMV.

CX offerings for catering have also been upped in the last 18 months with individually plated mains served off the cart in long haul, comparing the 2 services side by side they are equal if not better to QF - given the extended delays it takes for QF to get through a single meal service.

We arrived in Japan on 1 Feb and skied at Mt Naeba and Nozawa Onsen for two weeks.
Missed our QF flight back due to the heavy snowfalls and the earliest Qantas could re-book us was on Wednesday (3 days later than planned).

We stayed out at Narita Hilton which ended up being a really relaxing layover but spent lots of extra unplanned $$$ when we purchased new skis and boots in the super cheap ski shop area in Tokyo .

Fifa, just wondering if the hotel and food relaxing layover was covered by yr travel ins?

I was there 13 - 19 Feb. Lucky for me my flights were ok but I can think of worse places to be stranded.

We are with TID and I emailed them early on Mon 16th to enquire what was exactly covered.
I received the following response on Thursday afternoon after we arrived home and will submit the required documents this week:

Hi Fifa,
Thank you for getting in touch and I am sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Our policy offers coverage under Section 3 Additional Expenses for reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses because your scheduled public transport services have been cancelled or restricted due to severe weather, natural disaster, riot, hijacking, strike or civil commotion.
You may also be able to claim under Section 6 Travel Delay for reimbursement of pre-paid accommodation, transfers or events you have missed out on because you couldn’t reach your destination on time as a direct result of the cancellation, rescheduling or delay.
If the delay was more than 6 hours or more, there is cover for:

  • $200 for each 12 hours you are delayed, for additional meals, accommodation and transfers.
  • Reimbursement of pre-paid accommodation, transfers or events you have missed out on because you couldn’t reach your destination on time as a direct result of the cancellation, rescheduling or delay.
You are welcome to submit a claim for consideration whilst you are travelling or once you have returned back home. In the event of a claim, we may ask you for the following information to support your claim:

  • Receipts or other evidence of expenses paid by you
  • Evidence from the provider (Airline, Hotel, Bus company) explaining the circumstances of the expenses
  • Booking invoice showing original pre-paid arrangements
  • Proof of your travel dates (e.g. eTickets)

I just love Japan so I didn't mind staying for 3 extra days.
But it now means less rec leave for hols this year:(.

If our upgrade from Y+ to J is successful on QF 128 in June I am going to request a Y+ breakfast or even Y instead of the pathetic excuse that we experienced last year.

I'm going bald if I were to scratch my head again.

Paying for J but asking for Y food serving !

Hello, Red Roo......

I know! that implies a business class passenger even knows what the service is like in a lower cabin :shock:

However on our last flight BKK-SYD the FA showed mrsdrron the Y breakfast and it was more substantial than the J offering and we would have preferred it.

That at is exactly why I will request either Y+ or Y instead of what I was offered last year. At least give j passengers a decent choice of either a light breakfast or something more substantial.

I could not eat the citrus fruit salad, far too acidic for me and as for a greasy croissant , I would rather go without.

Jojen

The dinner service sucks too. Last week, at 6pm flight, Sydney to Adelaide, dinner consisted of a paper cup with couscos and a couple of slices of chicken. If that is dinner then breakfast sounds positively decadent.

I nearly did this once, but actually opted to skip breakfast altogether in favour of sleep. This was on QF98.

Hello, Red Roo......

I think part of the reason I decided to skip was the embarrassment associated with asking for a Y breakfast.

O Red Roo, Red Roo, wherefore art thou Red Roo?

If you read earlier posts in the thread, Red Roo is well aware of this issue, and has escalated it.

True

But up to now, we have no report of J pax actually planning to request an Y meal in lieu of their 'higher standard' offerings.

This is frankly embarrassing for the bean counters as their 'research' had apparently missed the target.
