Terrorist attacks in Paris

What I don't get about that is if they thought there was a bomb, why did they divert to a large city like SLC? They could have gone somewhere smaller like RNO or BOI, where if something had happened, there would be less damage.

We will never know the full details for obvious reasons, but perhaps they had good reason to believe it was not a genuine threat, but were obliged to land anyway.
Also, a relatively small device can cause explosive decompression and/or structural failure at altitude, but would not pose a threat to the environs on the ground.

Is the Mali hotel attack related?

This is starting to get out of control.

Good to know terrorist attacks are not out of control. Makes me feel much better.

The really sad thing - the west is only learning how much of this occurs everyday of the week ... it's the ultimate NIMBY ignorance!

We took the kids to England/ Europe about 4 weeks after 9/11. Can't deny I was a little edgy flying into London, but in the end the only unusual thing that happened (apart from pretty intense searches before boarding planes), was that there were zero people queued at the Tower of London - like a ghost town and we could spend as long as we liked looking at the crown jewels. Hope your holiday goes well.

I was in Paris a month after 9/11. Lots of security carrying sub machine guns but no one doing anything about those annoying hawkers under the Eiffel tower. Still heaps of people.

I for one don't really follow news so only hear about the major terrorist attacks.

Today I am travelling and have heard of 3 threat videos targetting the USA and now at HKG airport the focus of news programs is the hostage situation in Mali.

I for one feel uncomfortable.

Thanks FM

Life must go on. My parents took my brothers & I to UK/Europe in the mid 70's ... around the time of the London Bombings. I was only 8 but can still remember walking past the spot where the bomb went off in the Tower.

That has changed. We were in Paris this August. By the Eiffel Tower we saw a group of gypsy's basically stripped searched. Then waiting for MrP by those toilets at the rear of the Tower, I was standing next to a guy whose bag was filled with those mini tower trinkets. Next thing I was bundled out of the way by a group of four police as they swooped in to arrest him.

In my TR I referred to the fact that the tension in Paris was palpable. We saw so many friskings. Army everywhere and well armed. They knew something was going to happen just not when. But I would return to Paris tomorrow.

I was in Paris in late September and Brussels in early October. Noticed increased police presence all heavily armed. Agree situation seemed more tense than usual. At the time I thought it was due to the refugee crisis, but maybe not.

I think London at that point was viewed as more of a potential target than Paris. We went to Spain afterwards and it was totally relaxed.

Africa has had huge Terrorist problems (Islam related), over the last few years. The deaths in Kenya alone in the last year would be more than the Paris attacks. When we stayed in Nairobi last year, all cars entering the airport had to go through a security check. Vehicles had to stop away from the hotel and were scanned for bombs before being allowed to drop off passengers and you entered the hotel via a metal detector. We set it off every time we entered, but I guess we looked safe, as they never did anything about it :(. There were armed military guards permanently at the hotel....

Pushka, I couldn't find your TR – did you do one since last week's attacks? Would be very interested to read if you don't mind linking.

Thankyou OATEK - I am posting from my phone and cant access actual links!
