Looks like we just miss you guys - coughet from 01/01 - 06/01, Bangkok 06/09 - 09/09

Staying in IC from 26-29 and then St Regis.. from the 29-1st

Happy to catch up. SWMBO will be with me.

AA aust must be the worst call centre. They want to charge me 150 to add another segment from BKK-HKG-PER to BKK-KUL-HKG-PER.

Can't be right? The US call centre has a 2 hour wait!

Sounds like a plan, on 31 Dec I got a very cheap night (THB5,000 incl tax) at the Conrad residences. Haven't booked the rest of my stays yet.
It would be good to catch up.

Oh dear- looks like the entire city will be full of forum members, I'm also staying at the Hilton Sukhumvit over New Years! If the Thai politics allow for it...
So dont be a stranger.

I am not sure if I will have lounge access as a Hilton Gold.

Hilton Sukhumvit on 01/01, Hilton Doubletree on 02/01 and Millenium Hilton on 03/01. I shall start a separate thread in the Meetings forum.

Thanks hvr for the link.

I was in Thailand in 2006 and 2008, and felt reasonably safe.

I haven't locked down my Christmas / New Year plans, but will let you know if I am around.

As a side note, in 2007 there was a heightened state of alert given a rumoured terrorist strike around NYE.

No terrorist strike eventuated, but there was a small fire in a clothing shop. Given the electrical situation, the authorities cut power to parts of Sukhumvit and about a dozen fire appliances were dispatched, along with Police and Ambulances. For a few minutes we didn't know what was/had happened. The power just went off and numerous sirens wailed in the area. The situation became apparent fairly quickly, and any panic was soon forgotten.

AFAIK fortunately there were no major injuries and the whole incident was forgotten within a couple of days.

I was caught in BKK in 2008 when the airport was invaded. I never felt in danger and many Thais came and apologised to me for the inconvenience.

Simply put, smile, be respectful and don't comment on what is a local issue.

In the story above we actually wandered towards the commotion (fire) and were invited into an upstairs bar and given a free beer by the owner as we watched the emergency services out the window.
